I really hope we take a chance on Cameron Conlon at 51 if still available. Really think he could become anything if his body holds up. Could really fill that ruck/forward role we need

Anyone have any idea why the afl website now has us taking 5 picks + 2 rookie upgrades?

The 5 would be including our 2 rookie elevations, which do count as draft picks, just not live.

I think they've just made a mistake with the rookie picks, which is actually 4 (Scotty being one of them).

If we are going to take Cripps with our first pick, and most believe he would still be there mid 20s, surely we should have traded into the mid 20s so that we could also keep pick 13.
If we take Cripps, then he's the best available player for Carlton. All the phantom drafts and "in the know" sources pumping up McCarthy, Bontempelli, etc. aren't representative of our rankings. Always go for the best player.

Few BF people are claiming the Freeman to Melbourne rumours are true.

If the speculation is correct, then I might lose my shit if Brisbane takes McCarthy with pick seven...

GWS - Boyd
GWS - Kelly
St.K - Billings
WBD - Bontompelli
GCS - Kolodashnij
Coll - Scharenberg
Bris - McCarthy
Norf
Mel - Freeman
Coll - Aish
WCE - Sheed
Rich - Salem
Car - Lennon

Reckon I would spew up if Collingwood ended up with Sharenberg and Aish.

What's so bad about Cripps?

Not the worst pick...A well skilled, good moving 190cm midfielder.

Isn't he 192 cms?!

This.

Would love Conlon on our list for two reasons:

1. Fills a need/could be anything if he gets a proper shot at it (injury free!).
2. Is a local boy who is already training with the Northern Blues.

Paige Cardona's latest draft "whispers"

CARLTON have been closely connected to a number of players here, and the mail they received seemed to be bang-on regarding Cameron McCarthy’s likelihood destination to the Lions. Instead, the Blues will look to whoever the Tiger’s don’t pick, which is likely to be a flip of the coin between Christian Salem or Carlton supporter, Ben Lennon.
There is some conjecture over this selection, as the contingency plan for the Blues here would be Luke Dunstan, in what would be a bit of a turnaround. Blues may address a “needs basis” here, with Dunstan and take him a bit earlier, given there are 26 selections until their next pick. Several recruiters however believe that Dunstan is a second to third round selection – not that it would phase the Blues.
The Blues have also been associated with tall midfielder, Blake Acres who would prove to be a handy addition given the scope he has to play an array of positions.

.... so she claims that it will come down to either Salem/Lennon and whichever one the Tigers don't pick will be our selection.

Can't say I'd be unhappy if it panned out that way.

I'd be more than happy with Cripps at 13. Think he fills a need. Plenty of others I'd be happy with too FWIW. I think we'll land a very good player whatever happens. Menzel II.

I'd also be more than happy with Conlon, I'd even take him at 39, or 51. I'd also take Ben Brown, a similar type. Think both fill a need and could play that KPF/Ruck that Levi and Sam havent been able to grow into, but alas I feel they will be gone though. Conlon is rated highly.

There was an article about a month ago i just read, that the filth were looking at Bontempelli and traded up to 6 to get him. They allegedly traded up to beat out GWS who had 9 at the time, but GWS now have 2. GWS have interest in him apparently, but would think 2 is a huge reach for the kid.

Is it true that Conlon hasn't even played a game for 18 months or was the article a lie? Sure he may be talented, but aren't we sick or drafting talls who either slid in the draft through injury (Mitchell), or were oft injured while playing for us? Prefer to have select someone in the ND that we know can get on the park ASAP and actually develop, rather than stick together with tape like a mummy.

If we do end up selecting Cripps, I wonder if we will start to use the Geelong/Fremantle/Bulldogs model.

I met Brendon McCartney at a work function earlier on in the year (when he told me back then that Thomas was on his way to Carlton), he ran through the bulldogs recruiting model and what they looked for/what he was trying to achieve with his list management.

He said that during his time at Geelong it was drummed into the coaching staff that the bigger bodies stand up in September (he used Hawthorn and Sydney as examples - given the 2012 Grand Final), even though he's been accused of stocking up on similar type players (Koby Stevens, Libba, Wallace, Clay Smith, Hrovat, Lower, Boyd, Cross etc) he said that the players would learn to be adaptable with positions around the ground - and that midfield domination is what controls (and ultimately wins) games of football, so he was adding to that the best way possible by bringing in taller/bigger/strong bodies.

I am curious that with the selection of Cripps and already having: McLean, Bell, Curnow, Carrots, Graham, Cachia, Judd etc if we are looking to adopt a similar method and bolster our "size" around the contest which will give us an advantage when it comes to clearances and controlling the midfield battle.

For that reason alone, I'd be more than pleased to add an 18 year old, 192 cms/90 kg clearance monster to our midfield.

My thoughts exactly, a player like that we should either Rookie or sign up to play at Kramer St and let him know that if he has a good year, develops and his body holds up we will take him next year. From all reports next year’s draft is stocked with KPF and would rather hold out and wait 12 months rather than stocking up with players that will need time to develop. This is why Thorpe (I know, I know enough already) becomes appealing, he is ready to go and if he comes in and doesn’t produce we can deliist him and start planning instead of waiting in limbo hoping that one of our project players comes through.

Interesting that we're now strongly linked to two players that reportedly performed somewhat poorly at Draft Camp in Lennon and Cripps.

I have us down to 5 players now. Cripps, Lennon, Salem, Dunstan and Sheed.......................which means we'll probably get someone else.

When people talk down their abilities and say they performed poorly is somewhat short-sighted, they often forget a lot of kids go into the draft combine after coming back from injuries. I'm not sure about Cripps but Lennon's ankles weren't exactly 100%

It is interesting, isn't it? More than anything I believe this suggests that the importance of the Draft Combine is often grossly overestimated.

Of course an impressive showing can put you front and centre in the minds of the recruiters, but it's certainly not the be all and end all that some make it out to be.

Some players have freakish athletic traits which fit perfectly to the Draft Combine but can't translate that to performances at AFL level. Joel Wilkinson is a perfect example of that. Unbelievable athletically and from memory absolutely smashed it at the Combine, but get him out on the park and he was all at sea.

Conversely if you put some terrific AFL footballers through the Draft Combine testing I'm confident many of them wouldn't test all that well. It just gives further credence to the mantra that to be a good footballer you don't need to be an athlete.

I firmly believe the most important aspect of the Draft Combine is the player interviews. I have no doubt that you can learn a hell of a lot more about a player and their prospects for success from an interview than from any athletic testing you put the players through. Interview well and you're a real chance - which is why it is so often difficult to know the thoughts of clubs as we are not privy to those interviews.

With regards to Cripps, I was initially against selecting him at 13. However looking at it logically that's more a product of having other names thrust in front of us more frequently than his own, than due to him being a lesser footballer. For all we know his interview may have been ultra-impressive and the real 'clincher'.

For that reason I divert my trust to the experts. Of course I have certain preferences at each selection but that's highly superficial. They know what they're doing and I trust them to do the best thing for the club. If that means selecting Cripps at 13, or any other name for that matter, then I back them in as that's the only logical path to take.

Have a look the link Stamos.

Has us taking 13 39 51 67 79 with 89 & 94 set aside for the Rookie Promotions. A total of 7 selections.

Strange, because those numbers aren't just in the usual sequence. They seem somewhat definitive.

EDIT: Now it's really interesting.
It's possible picks. We can opt for a larger rookie list and go 38-6
