List Mgmt. 2013 DRAFT

A lot are saying we should grab the best available midfielder, others are saying we haven't drafted a decent goalkicker since Fev and should thus take a punt on McCarthy...

Would Jon Marsh be too much of a reach? On potential, sounds like the next Pavlich/Goodes but is something of a project player?

I think we have to go best available midfielder, I like marsh but hasn't got a great mark on him (with his separation pace he really doesn't have too) and I think we would be making a big mistake in pulling the trigger on McCarthy early... yes he is the second best kpp in the draft but there is a lot of daylight between him and boyd. I see McCarthy as a 15-20 type prospect.

my opinion is if were hell bent on a forward draft Marsh if available, play him in the midfield and in an elite environment his stills will improve.

I think we need to figure out the permutations for the top 10 players, then we can figure out who is available at our pick.

In no order we are guaranteed not to see.
Aish
Billings
Bontempelli
Boyd
Kelly
Kolodjashnij
McDonald
Scharenberg

We may see
Freeman
Crouch
Lennon
Acres
Sheed
Salem
Marsh
Dunstan

We shouldn't be reaching for
McCarthy
Taylor
Gardiner

so in my opinion we have eight players to form a wish list from, sure some will go before our pick and obviously some will go after but this is the range we should be looking in.

I'd give my left #$@ for Freeman. He could be our next Judd, and, he's a Vic Kid. There are no KPP's worth a dose of salt outside of Boyd and McDonald. McCarthy is too slight and will take a few years to develop. Best mid has to be the focus for 13.
McDonald is a tall flanker/mid like Gibbs or Mundy.

Freeman won't be the next Judd.

"taller players take longer to develop".

Fast forward 2 years. Round 2, 2016 - he's just had his 21st birthday. He's ready to take the competition by storm and be on the way to 200 games - for another club. :(

Meanwhile Carlton's forward line consists of Everitt and Kreuzer and some 23yo random VFL discard. Henderson is back in defence, Waite has retired, Casboult and Rowe have been delisted, Thorp was trialled, kicked 20 goals but suffered an injury and is now back coaching in the TSL.

wow..... that's a rather in-depth future.
I get the reasoning and I think we can expect McCarthy to be as good as Watson, but he's no Henderson or Reiwoldt.
I guess the question there in lies is it better for us to have a decent KPF or a potentially Elite midfielder?

He might be a WA boy, but I really can't see West Coast taking Sheed when they already have a very one paced midfield, given the doubts on his pace so could end up a steal if he slides to 13.

Indeed. But let's face it, our 'best available' draft pick has been passed over 14 times. (twice in the mini-draft and a dozen times in the ND). Why did he slide to pick 13? Because he has flaws like any other player.

So we're dealing with a potentially elite midfielder, with limitations that saw him slip out of the top 10 ranked junior onballers or a promising forward who mightn't be a Carey or a Franklin but is a key part of our structure for the next decade...

Not really fussed whether we get a Tall or a Short, a Mid or a Forward.

The one thing I do want though is for the player to be fully committed and have a real desire for the contest and a winning mentality.
We got that last year with the 4 boys we recruited.

It's just too hard to build those components in, if they weren't there in the first place.

Ben Lennon goes for Carlton so we whould draft him...... or we can just wait a couple of years until he joins the raft of players who supported carlton as a kid and want to be traded to the blues:p

Don't get me wrong I'm not against McCarthy I just don't want us to reach for the sake of reaching (simply because he's a KPF) If we do get McCarthy we will have to be patient, coming off a broken leg and being a kpp we may not see him until 2016-2017, but as you pointed put that's when we will need him.

i'm not familiar with Impey?
I'm not sold on Brown just yet but he does have a good kick on him, I suppose we could do worse at 39
I think 39 would be too early to be drafting Brown. He's not quite a KPF & not quite a ruckman. I guess he is a poor man's Vickery. I would look at him with a late pick or even in the rookie draft, if still available. I would hope at 39 we could get someone who is a definite KPP or a definite midfielder.

Your club's top draft priority:Callum Twomey
Carlton

Pick 13: The Blues need some more talls in attack, and could get the second-best one of the draft at their first selection. West Australian Cameron McCarthy is a leaping, marking goalkicker who was an All Australian under-18 forward. He has been recovering from a broken leg.

Around the mark: Christian Salem, Ben Lennon, Lewis Taylor
Your club's top draft priority:Callum Twomey

Pipe dream. :rainbow:

26 days to the draft: Meet Marcus Bontempelli

Any chance GWS may jump the gun and get Bontempelli with #2?

It has been touted that SOS loves Kelly but they may just want to mix it up a bit and get this guy. Collingwood would be livid. :)
Pies might go for another tall mid such as Acres who could be gone by ten. They might have to take Acres with their first pick. Brisbane could be looking for a tall mid or flanker to replace one of their losses. Acres and Bontempelli look like similar types. Though the WA player is quicker.

There is 2 things i love so much about AFL Footbal
