He is a midfielder and always has been, except for when his ankle looks like this:

But people who only watched him in the national champs think he's a forward only without knowing all the info.
Say he's a forward again...

I wouldn't be too upset if the wings, forward/mids and flanker/mids go early. There appear to be a handful of these players in the top ten. If we're lucky, they might push a mid down the order to our first pick. I would be rapt if we go with the other players, but a genuine inside mid might be the perfect fit for Carlton. Hope the cards fall the right way for us on draft day.

Yeah, he's a big dude, Juddy - he's actually 189cm.

Damn, I'm starting to get worried about Crouch, quite a few people mentioning his kicking, now.

Crouch wouldn't be drafted for his kicking, he would be our Brad sewell / Jab watson to an extent his kicking was woeful to begin with but was worked on and fixed. As long as Crouch can build his tank and make it to the stoppages then thats fine with me Yarran, Doc, Thomas, Gibbs, Murphy can worry about the kicking when Matt gives it to them wrapped up like a xmas present ;)

How does that relate to Crouch?

Even Rendell noted Sloane isn't a good kick.

Their first two picks were Davis and McKernan.

It relates because Crouch isn't exactly the elite kicker of the ball.
How do their first two selections relate to Crouch then?
I doubt Sloane's numbers in juniors were as impressive as Crouch's.

Exactly
Look at any finals game
Look at Judd in the elimination 3rd quarter
Or Gibbs in the 4th

Tough games arent won by beautiful kicks hitting people lace out, we have a couple of those Yarran and Lucas come to mind
But its the boys who rip it out of the pack and bomb it forward or hit someone with a handoass who win finals

What happened to Buzz after the 1983 season? Did he retire at 26 or what? Just curious and I wasn't alive in the 1980s.
The silly bugger went back home to Perth & signed a contract to play over there, then realised he still wanted to play for Carlton, but couldn't get out of the contract. He then ended up badly injuring his hand after punching a glass door. He did come back to Carlton but the game had passed him by.

It relates because you're using Sloane as an example that skill isn't important in today's game. They went for better alround prospects with their first and second picks.

Sloane played as a defender on Yarran in the under 18 championships.

Not exactly. We need to draft clearance mids who can use the ball as well as Mclean. Mclean won't win a footrace, yet he's a good kick with both feet and a smart footballer who can read the play. Terrific workrate for a plodder who runs hard all day like Mitchell and Williams.

Graham and Temay are a little similar with their endurance and disposal.

After last year, I'm reasonably confident that we won't be picking or overpaying for players who are poor kicks and/or lack endurance. Suspect we'll want a player with a good alround game and a heap of talent like Menzel.

Is Hugh Curnow from this year's draft the brother of Ed?
Not sure. Can't see the family resemblance like Ed's sister.

Sam Rowe's AFL highlights were more impressive...

Rookie.

Rookie or a late draft pick... I wouldnt waste one of the first 3 round picks on him... if someone else wants to grab him with a 2nd or 3rd rounder... go for it.

I'm no expert but crouch seems line a bloke you take with your second pick. Looks one paced, with average skills.

He doesn't seem to have the explosive speed of his brother and I feel the days of slowish mids like McLean and Sewell are numbered. Is it possible the success of his brother has moved him up the draft pecking order?

According to Quigly - he is an inside midifield bull who wins the contested possession, however his disposal, pace and agility are all poor.

I never said that so don't try and put words in my mouth.
I brought up Sloane as an example because people were saying Crouch is not a good kick and I'm simply stating using Sloane as an example as there are a fair few of blokes that before they got drafted their kicking were called into question also.

Awareness, hands (inside work) is elite, im not sure who he played against in his game for ballarat in the VFL but he hand it 25 times (not sure of the efficiency) but irrespective of his agility and pace he is getting his hands on the ball a hell of a lot. A TAC avg. of 30+ touches a game suggests that as well.

Whoever we get i wont be displeased with tbh the mids that fall at our range will all be more than capable, i just think an elite clearance specialist would compliment our midfield perfectly as Judd is still our no1 extractor and he isnt getting younger.

So McCarthy may actually go to Port or Brisbane? Interesting. Licking my lips at the thought of getting Taylor, Freeman or Salem into our team for 2014.
