According to Quigly - he is an inside midifield bull who wins the contested possession, however his disposal, pace and agility are all poor.

I also have an issue with his lack of fitness.

Obviously fitness is an area that can be improved but relatively speaking, for a pure mid, even at his age he should be fairly fit.

I wonder if he's been getting by on his ability to find the ball and not really bothering with the other stuff. Is he going to be one of those outstanding juniors who lacks the application to succeed at senior level.

All just crystal balling at the moment but regardless I think there are others in the draft who would be more appropriate for us at our pick.

But also to put things into perspective, Crouch, a kid who has been talked about as a bit "lazy" and lack of fitness, is getting the numbers, averaging over 30 touches a game when he's supposedly not that fit, if he builds an engine at the top level he'll be a good player

So McCarthy may actually go to Port or Brisbane? Interesting. Licking my lips at the thought of getting Taylor, Freeman or Salem into our team for 2014.

With Brisbanes current exodus of mids i cant see them pulling the trigger on Mcarthy they will grab a mid and probably nab Hourigan with their plethora of picks in the 20s, Port on the other hand have a great up and coming midfield and could probably use a Fwd on their list seeing as butcher isnt really doing much.

You'd think but as Bradschi alluded to above there has been talk of his lack of a tank.

While he's been getting big numbers, If he's dishing the ball out from a stoppage then jogging around for the most part with little or no link up play, no defending or pushing forward his actual impact on a game may not be of as much value as the possession stat in isolation suggests.

I guess my query based on the rumblings is will he be able to deal with the much higher fitness demands at a AFL club or is he a person who gets by on the ability he has now but wont work hard to get better.

Anyway just talking, I'm sure the club has a much better idea of what these kids are like than us keyboard analysts.

Tough games arent won by beautiful kicks hitting people lace out, we have a couple of those Yarran and Lucas come to mind
But its the boys who rip it out of the pack and bomb it forward or hit someone with a handoass who win finals

The team that just won the grand final base their game around being a good kicking side.
I'm really not too fussed who we take this season. You make a strong case for four or five players that will be available around our first rounder.

Sort of fits for our pick if his versatility, smarts and skill are as good as they say. Good height and size like Gibbs, Robinson and Rhys O'Keeffe.

Better endurance athlete than Crouch who was reportedly in the bottom 25% at draft camp. Crouch ran a 13.7 beep.

Pick 10 Trent DumontNorwood, 184cm, 84kg, 30/6/95

This guy should be able to replace Judd in some ways in years to come. Stong contested player with very good footskills so has that great combination. I also think he has some great foot smarts and just always seems to make the correct decision with the ball in his hands. May start across the HBF or HFF, but in a few years should be a solid midfielder for the blues.

He has the elite endurance for the modern day midfielder recently running a 15.02 in the beep test for SA, he does not have massive amounts of speed, but still rarely gets caught with the ball. I guess the main reason why he is above Dunstan is his decision making and ability to hit targets. (I know they will be compared often coming up to the draft)

The reports I've heard from SANFL level is the fact he has not looked out of place, I don't mind Nathan Bassett as a mentor for player development, so he should be AFL ready.

Has an element of Jobe Watson about his game play.

Almost all of the passes were not really delisted more so were out of contract and went into the draft with a club of choice picking them up. Very few of the legit delisted players work out. There is a reason clubs decide to cease employment with them.

Dumont and Crouch sound very similar. Dumont appears to be the better endurance athlete and a better kick.

I watched Dumont early in the year in the Foxtel Cup and thought he was reasonably impressive in senior company and I was expecting quite a lot from him at the Champs but he didn't really deliver on that. He only managed 17 disposals per game and did not really impose himself on the game like I thought he would and had the potential to do. Dunstan was the one who stood up and was that imposing inside mid for SA. Dumont played much more outside than he usually does and that is certainly not his strength. I subsequently learned that he had a niggling ankle injury affected him for about 6 weeks through the Champs period and this might well have been the explanation for his form not being great.

Like I said though he was quite impressive in senior company earlier in the year and finished the year strongly in the seniors for Norwood including a barnstorming first half in the GF. He was probably the BOG in the first quarter and over the match clearly outplayed Aish.

Personally he reminds me quite a bit of Vlastuin who rose up draft boards late last year and ended up going top 10 to Richmond. Whilst I do not think he will be top 10 this year there is a fair chance he could go higher than many expect. Like Vlastuin he is a solid, hard at it inside mid who is not the athletically gifted nor are his skills anywhere near elite but gets around the park pretty well and imposes himself on contests when he gets there. He may start his career off a HBF but I would expect him to move quickly into the midfield where he can use his biggest asset which is his ball winning ability.

In tight Dumont usually does his best work. He is good in tight and has clean quick hands that allow him to collect and get away before others react. As I had in my notes he looks quick between the ears and when he just does the simple things good things happen. He does occasionally try to be a bit fancy though, showing the ball and such, and when that happens things do not go nearly as well. He is not particularly elusive and people know it and he just puts pressure on himself. When he is under pressure he has good strength in the tackle and generally has good composure and doesn't panic. With the ball in hand he seems to have a beat more time in close than those around him and he uses that pretty well with his hand balling.

He is a very physical presence in the contest and will throw his body around. He is good defensively in the contest when the opposition gets the ball and tackles and plays the handball lanes well. He averaged 4 tackles per game at the Champs and showed he can handle senior players with his work in the SANFL.

Dumont has two main weaknesses. The first is that he does not play with the pace teams want these days and secondly his kicking is below par. In regards to pace he is probably not any slower than Crouch (not saying much admittedly given how poorly he went at Combine) and as an inside player concessions are made made somewhat but still it is an area of weakness that might drop him down a bit on teams' draft boards. He does not need to be a 100m sprinter but if he could develop his explosiveness over 5m it would help his game a lot.

With his kicking, Dumont does not go for much and so it's hard to criticise his decision making but his execution lets him down too much. His passes tend to come up short entirely too regularly and it looks like he lacks feel on his kicks. His field kicking technique does not have any obvious technical flaws that I have noticed it just seems that he under kicks the ball a lot and at AFL level that is a recipe for trouble given turnovers kill teams at that level. He is not a big goal kicker but when he gets the chance he does okay. He has a bit of an unorthodox hold on the ball with his set shot with his right hand on top of the ball but he controls the ball to boot pretty well. He has a comfortable approach in his set shot routine and from what little I have seen he looks to be a reasonable shot for goal.

On the outside Dumont gets around the park okay although he does seem to have a great feel for getting to dangerous spots. His endurance seems above average for this level (I am thinking early 14s) and whilst I never expect him to be elite in this area I think he has enough functional endurance to allow him to play his inside role. His spread from the contest is okay and he picks up quite a few possessions this way.

Overall I doubt Dumont is ever going to be champion of the game but he could be a big bodied inside mid that protects and feeds the flashy receiver types. So a good complementary player who mucks in and does the hard work to set up others.

Are you basing the fact he's a better kick of quigleys write up there or have you seen them both play and think he's a bettee kick.

Because on that write up when you compare crouch and dumont; crouch wins hands down

I would take the guy who wins 15 contests and is a slightly worse kick as opposed to the guy who wins 7 contests and is marginally better and not elite by any stretch

We need an extractor don't we? We got enough players on the outside. We need a tackling extractor. Sam Mitchell-esque. I don't care about much else except someone who is going to make the other teams midfielders think twice all day long that if they decide they want to go in there and get the pill they are gonna get hurt.

Being that we are pick 13 (or around that) we arent going to get the perfect specimen, but this is what we need with Carrazzo and Judd close to an end.

We're third in the league on clearances. In a year were Murphy played hurt, without Carazzo for most of it and Gibbs wasn't in the middle till the end.

Meanwhile we are 16th in the league for marks. But 1st for contested marks.

Yet we don't need outside link-up players.

This fetish for inside mids is honestly bizarre. It's obvious that with Murphy, Gibbs, Judd, Thomas, Carazzo, Mclean, Curnow, Cachia, Bell, Ellard etc. so forth being spoon fed by Kreuzer and Warnock we are fine in the clinches. But once we distribute outside? We need gut-runners on the flanks with Mick's gameplan. We need players who get the ball and move it on quickly.
