Assuming a general power ranking (top 12) as below, who's the most likely in that 5-10 range to slide through to Carlton at #13?

1. Boyd
2. Kelly
3. Aish
4. Billings
5. Scharenberg
6. McDonald
7. Lennon
8. Sheed
9. Bontempelli
10. Kolodjashnij
11. Freeman
12. Salem

At this point I'd think McCarthy and Taylor et al will be available at our pick, but if there was a surprise (ala Plowman last year) at the top end, could one of Lennon, Scharenberg, Sheed, Bonters or Kolo last to our pick?

Plowman wasnt a surprise to be drafted where he was at all... he was the scharenberg of his draft only his elbow injury prevented him displaying his talents if memory serves me right. If anything O'rourke was the more surprising one of the first 3.

I guess by that I mean in terms of the 'power rankings', Plowman was initially seen around the 8-15 range IIRC but towards the end he bolted due to GWS' needs. Wasn't a surprise but was considered a bolter. Think GWS will take Gardiner at 14 for similar reason.

I hope Lennon or Salem are there at 13 - Lennon a pipedream though I believe.

Taylor the most realistic possibility and I'd be stoked with him at our pick despite the height.

I think Acres is the one that is most likely available and that fits our needs. Would be a top 10 draft pick if not for his interrupted season due to a shoulder injury which kept him from being his best. Tall Midfielders with class and great skills is exactly what we need.

Hopefully he is around, if W.C take Acres instead of Sheed then either we get Salem or Sheed if Richmond take Sheed instead..... Very well rounded footballer.

Have i mentioned this kid Tsitas though? :p

Exactly. I think most people are of the thought that the top 12 will consist of those below, maybe not in that order. Next best i would definately say would be Acres, he could very well be selected before 13 however that would allow one of those below to drop and i think we would be rapped to get the player who falls out.

Id also be over the moon if we landed Sheed. We dont really have anyone who screams out leadership coming through, once murph retires i cant really see our next leader. Drafting someone like sheed with that leadership potential will be very beneficial to us

So after some consideration, I'm fine with drafting Crouch. Certainly something to work with, my reaction was purely in the vein of "god I'm sick of hearing how we need inside mids"

what do people think of SAs Luke Dunstan? Captained our winning SA team, and averaged 21 touches in his 3 SANFL games before a foot injury. Big bodied, inside mid , ready for round 1

Here is a little research project for you... go to Blueseum.org and have a look through the list of players who were champions for the club and work out approximately how old they were when they started playing for Carlton.

And work out when they were originally selected and when they finally had a major impact on the game.

I am willing to bet that the majority of the guys who you pick out were in their early 20s when they first played senior football for Carlton and if they were picked up when they were in their teens, they ended up playing 3-5 years in the reserves getting experience or they played in a state league (SANFL or the WAFL) before they were picked up by Carlton.

I would prefer that we picked up some good kids, give them limited game time while maximising their games in the VFL. This way, in a couple of years when they turn 20, they are much suited to playing against men rather than the other school kids they have been playing against for the last few years!

I believe that without our own Reserves and even under 19 teams has cost us a lot of great players, all the Champions of the club came through the u19s and Reserves where they played with each other and built there game and skills around other Carlton players from a early age and worked there way through the ranks and finally into the seniors where they had a number of other players coming through with them from the beginning and knew how to play to both there own and a lot of team mates strengths. It was great when you could go to a game, very early if you liked and watched all 3 teams play and see young players starting there career and you could follow them and see who was going to be great players for the club in the future. Without the U19s and Reserves we now don't have players who can be at the club for 5 or 6 years learning what is needed to be a elite AFL (VFL) player.

I keep changing my mind daily (which is pretty much an annual tradition for me leading up to the draft).

Yesterday I wanted Crouch at our pick because the bigger bodies in the middle are what stands up in September, and even though he is a bull in the middle of the contest - when he isn't playing there, I don't know if we can hide him anywhere else on the ground (such as a resting forward role etc).

Sounds like your mind needs one of these C4.

You're right! this the effect the draft has on me though - its a build up of excitement.

The only time I didn't care about it was in 2010 - because I was in Vegas at the time and my mind was elsewhere!

.... although I did have Splendini text me our picks as they happened at round 3 am (and my wife wasn't happy).

Crouch, Dunstan, Acres, Salem. I keep switching between these four. Crouch's aggression vs Dunstan's reported leadership qualities is interesting. Acres is a unknown and Salem will be unlikely to slide.

Add to that Freeman and you have my list.

The reason why clubs were able to give players plenty of time to develop/mature back in those days was the unlimited playing list size & no salary cap. In the current setup, where your playing list is limited to 44 players (senior & rookie list combined) & clubs are using 30+ players per season, it is very hard to give all players the time they need to develop at a lower level & with the compulsory requirement to draft at least 3 players each year & a 3 year limit on players being on the rookie list, clubs are not in a position to wait 5-6 years for players to develop, hence some players are lost to the game because they don't mature/develop as quickly as others.

IMO, the demise of the old Under 19s competition was not a bad thing. Most people would be surprised how few players progressed from the Under 19s to senior VFL/AFL competition. I was actually browsing The Blueseum the other night, particularly looking at our Under 19 lists through the '60s & '70s, & it served to remind me just how few of the club's better players through this period (& into the '80s) actually came from our Under 19s. I think you will find this to be the case at most of the VFL clubs during that era. Browsing the reserves playing lists also revealed a number of players who didn't make the grade or played a handful of games whilst being on the list for a number of years (many of them went on to play at VFA level).

This guy... would be a great get. Could be available at our pick and is a good sized midfielder.
  • Well built and a good height for a midfielder
  • Versatile and content with playing anywhere
  • Great attitude, humble and team-oriented
  • Beautiful left foot kick over any distance
  • Good hands
  • Solid speed (2.98 over 20m) and endurance (14.5 in beep test)
  • Keen to learn and won't take his chance for granted
  • Likened to Luke Hodge - can't complain about that
  • Best of all - comes from a mad Essendon family. Would love to turn him and his family over to the Dark (Navy Blue)-side
Appears to be one of the safest picks available around our pick. My mind changes day-to-day like many others but a few things I think our #13 really should have (hope Mick sees it this way):
  • Good attitude
  • Good kick
  • Midfielder with versatility (McKay inferred we'd look at a sweeping midfielder)
  • Decent speed and endurance
Salem fits the bill so based on this, I'd suggest he's a real chance to end up in the Navy Blue should he be there. If the Lions are looking at McCarthy, this could mean a few others fall - meaning the chance of him being there is only increased.

Don't think we'll see Salem somehow.
There seems to be a first 12 just at this stage and then a little bit of a lottery thereafter.
We'd need a team delving outside that 12 in order for one of them to drop to us.

Falling into what we may have to pick from are Freeman, Crouch, Taylor, Dunstan, McCarthy, Gardiner.
If the mids aren't seen to be good enough, I wouldn't now be surprised to see us pick up Gardiner. He's growing on me and is featured on the AFL site today.

Would we stretch to pick up the athlete in Hartung?

If the rumour mill is correct - and Melbourne are keen on Freeman, that would see one of the first 12 slip out to us.

Out of the second lot - I would like Freeman, Crouch, Dunstan or McCarthy, I'm not overly excited by Gardiner or Taylor.

Hartung would be interesting - he divides opinion.

I think Freeman will certainly be gone by #14 of that lot - Best looks to be Taylor (short ass issue's) and Dunstan
