Is he the brother of the Cripps at the eagles who ran back to WA at the first opportunity after the saints drafted him. If he is then I am worried we would be potentially wasting a top pick on a player that more than likely, would want to head back to WA when he has the chance.

Nope cousins according to a Saints poster on the Draft board.

Just passing on the info I've read around the traps ;)

They did take Mcrae as 5 or 6 last year. But I would have Mcrae > Bont.

They had an extra pick last year and could afford to take Macrae but I see your point.

I guess I just don't see Bontempelli as sure of a thing as what a pick 4 would like to be.

He'd definitely be a high risk pick at pick 4. As opposed to a Scharenberg if he was still around.

Bont to me is very boom or bust. Could be absolutely anything or flop.

Of course I'd be rapt if we got him at 13 though ;) But I'm getting the impression Mick & Rogers & co want a more ready made player this time round.

So whats the major difference between Bontempelli and Cripps?

Both tall midfielders (194 and 192 cms) Cripps more inside?

Cripps more inside.

Bont has played all over the ground too. Plays up forward. On HB. And he's still only 17 so probably will grow a bit more. Cripps had like a 20cm growth spurt over the last 2 years. Neither are very quick. Think Cripps struggles about athletically - 13.1 beep and around bottom 10% in 3k time trial.

Bont is more versatile at the moment. But I think a lot of the hype around him is based on potential - so picking him comes with a lot of risk.

But as I said, I don't think Brisbane have reason to be into McCarthy. The Bontempelli/Scharenberg/Aish talk for me is just shuffling top 6 lock in players around so doesn't mean much to us.

But this is all in terms of getting attached to players...anything can happen on draft day. I hadn't even considered Lucas when he slid to us.

Not disagreeing/arguing, but Brisbane have been mentioned a few times with McCarthy in the media. reasoning IIRC was as a replacement for Brown. They also delisted Cornelius and havent picked anyone up to cover. Paine is seen as a 3rd tall.

Jonathan Freeman will be taken late by them through an academy pick. There's Lisle too but that's not much to hold on to I guess.

I may very well be wrong and will gleefully eat humble pie if McCarthy is taken by them.

It's also been suggested some of their talls (i.e. Paine & McGuane) could be moved into defence.

Surely you jest? Brown in his twilight years (and pretty much a walking injury), Merrett a 'Pinch Hitter FWD at best who is better down back, Cornelius gone and Longer Traded, who else they got tall enough?? McCarthy would pretty much get game time from Round 1.

Pretty accurate assesment there zee.
With picks 6 & 10, Collingwood could easily get say Salem & Lennon/Freeman.
From all reports they have gone cold on Bontempelli.

Any idea if there is any chance that Bontempelli could slip to 13? I have seen a couple of phantom drafts that has us getting him at 13 but not sure if that is genuine. Also, is Freeman good enough by foot to go that high?

Lisle, Paine, Paparone, Jonathan Freeman will be added, Michael Close are all forwards.

Brown will be supported by at least one of those guys with someone stepping up the year after.

Meanwhile there's some bloody good midfield talent around their pick while McCarthy can be seen as a reach.

I jest often, but not now :)

Well I sincerely hope you are wrong as I rely on him going at 7 as a catalyst for my Bontempelli slide to 13... :p

FWIW if you read the 2012 draft thread we were convinced there was no way Brisbane would take Mayes last year because they had so many of the same type already. Anything can happen.

Well, i hope nearly everyone here is disappointed(by the sounds of it) when we bag McCarthy, the A Grade exciting KPF we so badly need going forward.

If, and that's a big if, he is there at 13 we will surely pounce.

13) C.McCarthy
39) G.Hewett

Plan for the future and success is a possibility.

Chase your tail and you forever chase your tail.

Look he could, but who knows.
Anything can really happen in this years draft after GWS' first couple of selections.

Reading the 2012 Draft thread is quite entertaining.

Apparently our 2010 draft was going to set us up, with Mitchell and McCarthy to cement their spots in the 22 by the end of last season.

A lot were not very in favour of getting the Menz.

How things change.

If anyone is listening to SEN between 4-5pm tomorrow, Brett Anderson from Inside Football will be doing 11-20 of his phantom draft. He was on this afternoon, and seems to know what he is talking about.

I hope he doesn't. He seems pretty confident that we want Cripps with 13.

What's so bad about Cripps?

Not the worst pick...A well skilled, good moving 190cm midfielder.

I just think there will be better available at 13 than Cripps. Not saying he is a bad footballer, just that there will be others available I'd like more. But I guess I've got to trust Rogers & co ;)

If we are going to take Cripps with our first pick, and most believe he would still be there mid 20s, surely we should have traded into the mid 20s so that we could also keep pick 13.

Well Bootsma, Lucas and Levi were all on the table. Perhaps this was why.

Anyone have any idea why the afl website now has us taking 5 picks + 2 rookie upgrades?

I believe this is just the AFL not necessarily considering what the club is looking to do, but rather listing the options available to them.

It all depends on how the club wants to structure the list heading into 2014. Last year we had 44 listed players with a break down of 38 + 6. Given the club has stated we're only looking to take the 3 picks in the National Draft, it appears the club believes this to be the optimal list structure.

Currently we have 35 + 3 (+1 Category B rookie which does not count towards the tally), so the 3 picks in the ND as well as 3 in the RD will see us through to that total of 44.

Things can change on draft day as the club is not necessarily locked into anything by way of structure at this stage, so we do have #67 and #79 available should we wish to use them. However from the sounds of it the club wants to stick to the 38 + 6 structure they believe to be the best fit for us currently, and I expect that to be the result.
