Is it true that Conlon hasn't even played a game for 18 months or was the article a lie? Sure he may be talented, but aren't we sick or drafting talls who either slid in the draft through injury (Mitchell), or were oft injured while playing for us? Prefer to have select someone in the ND that we know can get on the park ASAP and actually develop, rather than stick together with tape like a mummy.

Realistically we need to improve our KPP depth and development. It would be poor management to hang our hats on picking up a free agent next year. Boyd, McCarthy, Gardiner and maybe Apeness are the frontline KPP talent, and it is unlikely we will get them. We are then faced with a number of solid types with unknown "upside". Conlon and a couple of others are more speculative, but could fall in to the category of high risk, high reward. At the moment too much of our future is dependent on one or both of Levi and Sam Rowe elevating to be at least a solid KPP on a weekly basis. Even the most optomistic among us would have to agree that there are plenty of questions still to be answered.

:rainbow: It may be time to bite the bullet and take a punt (after due diligence of course)

Luke Williams was responsible for the out of the blue selection of Harry Taylor with Geelong's first pick in 2007, if he thinks the same of Cripps then we should not doubt him.

Exactly,

Its what we head-hunted him for, to provide some good IP from Geelong and Stephen Wells.

I wonder if we are one of the teams that could pull the trigger on highly rated youngster Alex Keath, who was selected by Gold Coast as a 17 year old, but turned it down for cricket.

197 cm KPD and he wouldn't even cost us a draft pick!

ALEX KEATH
Age: 21. Sport: Cricket. Height: 197cm. Weight: 91kg
Keath isn't just some talented cricketer who could once play football. We are speaking about a key-position defender who was taken by the Gold Coast Suns in 2010 when they had access to the best dozen 17-year-olds in the country. Keath seemed to have so much time at his disposal when playing football and has the potential to go forward.

While Keath hasn't nominated for this year's draft, he could be taken under an AFL ruling that allows recruitment of players who haven't been registered for any Australian rules football club over the past three years.

We passed on 2 picks last year.

According to Ms Quayle's list Essendon, Fremantle, Melbourne, PA, Hawthorn, Richmond and Sydney have selections after us and GWS will pass for the pre-season draft. Due to our 6th place finish, that's a full 20 selections between pick 51 and our first rookie selection.

Supposing there are a couple of players we really rate, chances are they'll be gone within those 20 picks. The club has that option (pending any salary cap issues).

I can see why the club would want Dunstan. Captain of SA. Big bodied mid. Not as tall as some others (ie Cripps) but still a good height.

:thumbsu: Losing Laidler, Hampson, Mitchell and McCarthy in one post-season diminishes our depth. It's not panic stations but from pick 39 onwards, pragmatism should come into 'best available' calculations.

McStay, J Kolodjashnij and Giles might be gone by pick 39, once Brisbane has had its 6 selections. That leaves us with the likes of Harvey, Tickner, Pearce, Barrass, Le Grice, Beasley, Spencer to consider for the rookie draft.

Anyway, rookie Josh Scott - a little on the shortish side for an AFL KPP but won the U18 goalkicking. Though I think Luke Reynolds is this year's Tim Membrey...

I believe this is just the AFL not necessarily considering what the club is looking to do, but rather listing the options available to them.

It all depends on how the club wants to structure the list heading into 2014. Last year we had 44 listed players with a break down of 38 + 6. Given the club has stated we're only looking to take the 3 picks in the National Draft, it appears the club believes this to be the optimal list structure.

Currently we have 35 + 3 (+1 Category B rookie which does not count towards the tally), so the 3 picks in the ND as well as 3 in the RD will see us through to that total of 44.

Things can change on draft day as the club is not necessarily locked into anything by way of structure at this stage, so we do have #67 and #79 available should we wish to use them. However from the sounds of it the club wants to stick to the 38 + 6 structure they believe to be the best fit for us currently, and I expect that to be the result.

Yes, or course. The 35 players i mentioned included the 2 rookies to be upgraded. I have read somewhere that the club will go with 38/6. The AFL probably go with the assumption of 40 senior players.

Have a look the link Stamos.

Has us taking 13 39 51 67 79 with 89 & 94 set aside for the Rookie Promotions. A total of 7 selections.
Strange, because those numbers aren't just in the usual sequence. They seem somewhat definitive.

EDIT: Now it's really interesting. Are we going to pass on 67 & 79 then?

I believe we are going to have 38 senior players, those selections are based on having 40.

Wouldn't mind it at all for a rookie pick, of course that is if he has the desire to return to football.
Highly rated as a junior and if he is ready to crack down and work hard to make up for the past few years, might come good.

She talks down Dunstan as a second round pick and a crazy move if it's on the basis of needs. :D

meh.

And then goes on to say he is captain material who will play 200 games without fuss. Must have changed her mind when she realised it was Carlton she was talking about as a Collingwood supporter.

Reckon I would spew up if Collingwood ended up with Sharenberg and Aish.
If Aish slides to pick ten, then he hasn't come on like many predicted. He'd add to Hine's army of short people that he favours.

Time will tell pick six is better than pick 11. WC could be the winners if they get Salem or Lennon plus Yeo.

I know the Lennon family and a couple of months ago they said that WCE were keen on Ben and had spoken to them often. I wonder if they felt he would slide to pick 11 so they could get him anyway.

Richmond are again in the nervy position of having to make their selection just before ours.

If they have to make a decision between Lennon and Salem, will they just toss a coin? :)

Always best to have the pick after Richmond ;) Look what happened last year with the first live pick after Vlaustin.

In seriousness, according to Richmond people they would take Salem over anyone other than the top 3.

Richmond have recruited to a plan by getting ready made bodies in Conca, Ellis and Vlastuin in recent years but I just wonder whether they may regret not picking up a bit of flair along the way.

I don't think Richmond would be too disappointed with that lot.

I'm sure that they would have liked to have taken Heppel over Conca but Conca is a good player.

There isn't a clear cut player better between the Ells pick and their next selection.

Vlastuin was a very solid safe pick and had a very reasonable debut season. Perhaps down the track they'll rue not picking up Menzel if his knees hold up as we hope.

Nothing wrong with that ;)

We can only dream of them having the choice of those two at their pick.

Didn't mean to say Salem would be a bad choice. Just that I would expect them to pick Salem over Lennon.

It's just a coincidence that I want Lennon :P
