I guess I do not understand this logic. If Carlton want to take him at 13, the chances are he will go around 13. I know that a lot of people keep saying this but the view of the media and bigfooty posters probably does not strongly correlate to the views of the clubs. If someone slides and we take them instead of Cripps (or if the mail on Cripps is wrong), he is not going to last much after our pick and certainly not to 18.

You only have to look at the 2009 draft to realise that there are even drafts in regards to mids and flankers...

Fyfe, Bastinac, Duncan and Christensen have outperformed a lot of the first round picks. We'd be laughing if we had ranked Fyfe, Duncan and Bastinac higher than Lucas, Pittard and Jetta. The last three are still talents, but the game now favours the types Freo, Geelong, Hawthorn and Sydney have built their sides around. Dogs, GWS, GC and Richmond have a good mix of inside and outside players.

It's gradually moved back to pure footballers with Mclean surviving due to his footy smarts, clean hands, good disposal and clearance work.

So at this stage we've got to be a 90-95% chance of calling out Cripps' name tonight.

Question: which player/s would have to slide for us to overlook Patty, knowing he'll be gone way before 39?

I reckon if any of the below fall somehow (excluding obvious top 5 in Boyd, Kelly, Billings, Aish & Scharenberg), we should pounce - otherwise Cripps is our man:

Salem - some believe as high as pick 6 and I believe we'll jump at him if available
Sheed - can't see if happening but would be a dream and simply cannot overlook if it happens
Lennon - will bleed for the Navy Blue and can play mid/fwd. great skills and awesome finisher - adds agression and passion plus class. sign me up.

Those who I believe may go before 13 but still would pick Cripps over:

McCarthy - as per my previous post, believe Cripps suits our needs better and we should go mature with a KPF in 2013
Freeman - one I've gone cold on, his speed is exciting but I reckon Marsh at 39 would be better and Cripps' attributes are still better suited to us atm

I honestly think it will be a case of Cripps oo in the off chance (I give it about 5-10%) one of Sheed/Salem/Lennon slide - one of them.

Who would you like to see us pick as a realistic slider over Cripps?

Sorry but that is not correct. I watched the championships. I'm not basing my opinions on other posters. That was my point.

Anyway, for what it is worth the reason Cripps struggles athletically is because he broke his leg a couple of years ago. Hence he is starting from a lower base. So maybe there is hope yet

Oh he broke his leg, that's a major injury, surely if that didn't happen he would've gone higher, and going by that logic he is a slider

I think we are agreeing with each other. The draft that you have attached suggests what seems obvious which is that from a clubs perspective, you take them where you rate them and not where you think others will rate them. I was responding to someone suggesting that if we wanted Cripps we should have traded down 13 to 18 and got him at 18. I was suggesting that he would not be there at 18. I entirely agree with your point; the type of players getting drafted at the high end of the draft is changing - Cripps fits this type.

Also, I am not sure that Mclean is that good at clearance work. Agree with the rest of the attributes that you suggest that he has (and I am a big fan of his) but I am not sure that clearances are his strong suit. He is fantastic in close but I am not sure that extends to clearance work.

I don't understand the angst and perception that we're drafting for needs. We appear to be picking our best available player. You can throw a blanket over the players we'll be choosing from. There doesn't appear to be a lot on offer between picks 13 and 30. Mostly mids like the draft I listed. Even Andy McKay mentioned that there were just three or four talls available.

According to richmond this is how top 12 will go.
Boyd Kelly Billings Bontempelli
Kolodajashnij Scharenberg
Aish McDonald Freeman Salem Sheed and then us to pick Lennon. They think there is 9 standouts in the top 12 but are confident one will drop to us. Preference is Salem followed by Lennon and then freeman.

We have been talking about getting a mature aged KPF for the last 3 or 4 years with no luck, there is no guarantee that we will grab one next year either.

If McCarthy is available at 13 I say we pull the trigger.

I think Cripps is a lock unless Salem or Sheed is there. It';s difficult to split him and Dunstan,, they perhaps think Cripps is a bit tidier with his disposal. I think all those three players will be around at thier later picks and they do seem to be looking for mids. Emma Quayle

I think it's a fair enough spot for Cripps. If you're looking for someone who's good around the stoppages then he's in the top few, for sure.
