Makes me wonder if there's a chance we'll draft Cornelius etc here. I'm a little hazy about how many rookies we can play in the seniors without the unfortunate trade-off of a longterm injury. We'd expect both Scotland and Cachyia are obvious frontrunners for nom rookie spot - where would that leave our remaining four rookies?

Cornelius is about the only delisted player close to fitting the bill of ready made tall forward. I am unconvinced though as only 192cm. Good form in NEAFL but failed the test at Brisbane. Think we pass.
We may as well just send Walker forward (or McInnes/White)
Even after all of the rhetoric, it comes back to Thorp:p . Young Conlon training with Northern Blues as a developmental player has merit as IMO we are 2 talls short. Then throw in a young mid type such as Lambert, or Miles from GWS. As have said before I like the credentials of undersized Ben Cavarra as well.

As for who gets the nominated spots, the club, surely, would be guided by the preseason rather than them being cast in stone.

No not really, going into the trade and Draft, almost 100% of all Blues fans would have put getting a key fwd as our biggest priority. There is no doubting the players we got during the trade period will make us better but I just pray that we don't revisit this in round 10 when Waite goes down with a Hammy and again have the conversation we have had for the past 4 years about why we don't have any back up plan, and inevitably rob peter to pay Paul and throw Kruezar fwd, which we all know is not going to win us a flag.

I think your 100% is more like 60%. The rest of us believed that leg speed or big mid was a priority. I sure did. Why else keep Casboult and Rowe? McCarthy, the golden child, won't contribute for 2-3 years. Next years draft has a plethora of bigs allegedly.

Giles, releases Henderson to play KPF, or, can do it himself. He's a brilliant pick IMO.

Not sure I get the negativity in your post.

Don't disagree with any of this. Am more curious to know how many of our rookies are eligible for elevation to the senior list WITHOUT an LTI. At the moment we have two rookies that are AFL ready and have proven themselves in MMs structures. If we rookie more than one ready-to-play mature agers then can we play them all? Drafting a delisted player in the PSD would remove that (possible) impediment.

I don't think you need to be Nostradamus to predict that a recent club champion and reigning best first year player will be hard to dislodge as first selected nominated rookies.

Spot on. I wouldn't mind Cornelius. He can come straight in if required. Thorp will take a bit if time. A player like Hourigan or Scott will take time.

Conlon will take time but is the perfect rookie prospect IMO.

Your mids make sense. Add Matt Thomas as an experienced straight in option or young Mellington who seems to have fallen off the radar. Battersby and Templeton are two kids pretty unlucky and well rated.

You do realise had we got McCarthy he wouldn't be ready for senior footy for 2 or 3 years? Would be useless if Waite gets injured.
I was never saying McCarthy was our answer, but 3 KPFs in Jessie White, Cramerie & Gumbleton were traded and we didn't have a crack at getting either. If we take Thorpe with our Rookie pick then my point is almost mute as he appears almost the perfect back up plan for if/when Waite gets injured.

Roos is there to help set them up and bring in another Longmire once his contract is up.

Don't know why a few of their fans aren't happy with Salem. They're enamoured with Freeman because he is quick. Salem is reportedly a better kick and a tough footballer.

No point in being quick unless your skilled enough to take advantage of it e.g Yarran

A slower mid with great skills e.g Hodge beats a quick mid who shanks the ball e.g Grigg

Not saying a key forward isn't or shouldn't be on our priority list, because it is.
However you need to adapt, making drafting a key forward your number 1 priority in a draft where it is filled with midfielders, is not smart management. People that adapt, will survive and they'll be better for it. In this case our recruiting team addressed the need of a couple of big midfielders, along with a key position defender that has swingman potential is just good drafting.

Personally, I for one did not put key forward as our biggest priority this draft, and the way things went on Thursday night, the club has done pretty well, and we'll come out better for it.

Don't understand this. Fev, Pav, Crameri, Darling show that you can be a great key forward despite not been 198cm's.

I Agree we are in a better position now than we were 3 months ago, and I suspect the trades we made will turn us from a team that finished 9th to a team that will finish about 6th, but had we gotten a Jesse a White we could have been a top 4 side.

I think that's what Collingwood were hoping when they successfully courted Q-Stick.

Surely this wasn't serious

Don't know if this group as a whole fit the "great" tag.

Players are getting bigger at a ridiculous rate. If you are not 6 feet tall you have a very small likelihood of being drafted. 1 in 25 or so it would seem. Would Cornelius be a better target than Walker? Could he be "the" focal point of our attack? I dare say if he could, Brisbane who have a similar "need" to us would have kept him.

Why add a rookie who is unlikely to bring a point of difference either now or in the future?

Crameri is not a KPF. He played 3rd banana behind the likes of Hurley, Gumbleton, Daniher, Bellchambers etc.

You wouldn't go near Gumbleton. Unless he gets silver service he is very easy to shutdown & Essendope still had to rest him on occasions this season due to his broken down body.

White wouldn't have given us anymore than we already have with Casboult & Rowe. He was behind a number of players at the Swans as a KPF, including Roberts-Thomson.

If top four is what you're looking for then White is far from the answer, he can play a role but that's all he'll be, no offence to him. We've already got enough role players.
Just going out and blindly getting any KPF is just not gonna cut it.

See your point we really need an AGrade, All Australian standard key fwd so not getting T Cloke across the line when we were talking to him might be the big failure, let's not make the same mistake and get Patton.

Don't really need a A-grade. B-grade forward who makes a contest and kicks 20-30 goals would be fine. White is C-grade.

A bit early to call that, we still are missing a KPF and again are going into a season reliant on Jarred Waite not getting injured or suspended, with no real back up plan.

You can't draft a key forward if they arent there. Nor can you force a trade for the Tom Boyd's out there.

You are right, time will tell how it all goes, but as I said, this is the role of development. We recruited well I think.

Henderson will be the A Grade forward. What doesn't seem out of reach, is playing Watson as a KPF in the future years. Have him playing as a swing man this year, and get Frawley next year to play as the main KPD with Jamison and Giles. Henderson and Watson as the KPF with whoever we have as the third tall... Thorp ;)
