Tomlinson. Please.

Good to note he and Buckley are friends. Treloar too.

This seems a pretty salient section:
"The main reason for players not nominating in the National draft is that those who nominate for the Pre-season draft may set the terms for their contracts; in contrast, all players selected in the National Draft are not able to set a minimum acceptable contract period or salary."

This is wrong. Luke Ball for example set his own terms in the National Draft.

then any player can set their terms in the draft and end up in the team they want.

Ok ... so if we pass on the PSD - we will have four selections (three live) in Rookie Draft:

12, 28, 41, 50 (Scotland).

Cachia is the only player to remain on our rookie list from 2013 and we're going with a 38/6 split, so I believe we'll be taking 5 picks in the rookie draft.

Scotland and Sheehan will be joining the rookie list, which leaves 3 'live' picks.

Given that Scotland and Cachia are locks for the nominated rookie spots, you would think we will be after project rather than ready-made players.

Going to be interesting.

GWS aren't going to be able to play all of their talls at once.
A number of clubs will come knocking at the end of next season.
But would love Tomlinson at Carlton.

Agree - wouldn't be cheap but affordable. Pick 9 in a compromised draft - if he sees the writing on the wall and wants out, could be a realistic target. Unlikely Patton who would demand a top 3 pick and Boyd and Cameron are untouchable.

Snoop's phantom is up. Has us taking the same players (cavarra, thorp, lambert)

Has Tsitas sliding to pick 68. o_O I thought an outside player with good skills, fierce tackling and a superlative beep test would rank higher. Doesn't rate Templeton either.

Having Battersby, D Cameron, Spencer, Hourigan and Conlon gone before our pick doesn't inspire confidence.

Realistically, what are we looking at in the draft? Surely will go on a needs basis.

Feel free to debate this, but I see 3 x needs to address in the rookie draft:

KPF depth, midfield depth and project ruck.

Possibilities at each of these as below:

KPFs - Thorp, Hourigan
Mids - Cain, Cavarra, Lambert, Maicon
Ruc - Conlon, Cameron, King

My ideal combination would be Thorp, Cain/Lambert (in that order) and Darcy Cameron.

Cameron proved a good 1-2 with Cripps this year in the U18s so would be a good long-term combination. Thorp is def. worth the punt imo as there'll be no promises and low-risk for us. If he makes it, could be a huge coup for us and best case he could make a big impact on our chances going forward. Worst case - he wastes his chance and we ditch him end of 2014. I'm liking our midfield depth now with the likes of Bell, Graham, Cachia, Temay, Ellard, Cripps, and Holman fighting it out for a bench spot throughout 2014 - one of Cain/Lambert could easily come straight in and play a FP/rotating mid position ala Zorko in 2012.

We play this correctly and we are definitely a chance for Top 4 as I predicted a few weeks ago for next year.

As a sidenote: 2014 Draft will likely see us do another 2010 and go tall - pick up a 1st round tall as well as pushing hard for one of GWS' young talls. If we can trade one in and draft another good one, Mick could definitely take us to the promised land within 2-3 years.

I understand the interest in home-grown Lambert (he's already at the Northern Blues and knows what's required) but what does Cain bring to the table when we have the likes of Ellard struggling to get a game due to lack of opportunity?

Surplus depth is only virtuous if we're expecting a 2011-style run of injuries - in which case I'd play the kids in Graham, Temay, Menzel and Buckley.

Long as he knows how to score goals, I'm not against him at all Etsal! Might be better long term than a Cain but those guys could make more of an impact in next 1-2 yrs. Plus for Lambert that he already plays for NBs...

He definitely knows where the goals are. But the part that appeals to me most is he is a two way runner :) don't really care that he is short (175cm) because if you can play your height isn't going to stop you. And he is very quick.

I think Lambert may appeal over Cain to some people because he is 5 years younger. But I don't think we're lacking in Cain's position.
