I can see Dick and Johnson making a good combo in defence.

Hopefully they both have shlong careers.

How many inches are these floppies?

Call me stupid if you must, but there were interviews on SEN with Membrey and Towers here. But, how do I launch the audio?

You need a windows media player extension, a popup comes up at the bottom of the screen when you load the page asking to install it.

May as well write up my draft review here.

Dean Towers

Well we have actually been looking at Dean Towers for quite some time (Had originally been impressed with him in about May and have kept tabs since.
In 2011 whilst he showed some potential he was never truly consistant and mostly played off the half back flank for the first half of the year, Whilst as soon as they moved him to the wing and started using him as an outside midfielder, He showed some flair for goal and improved greatly, Although he was still marred by inconsistency.
Apparently he was challenged to improve this by Gerald Fitzgerald (North Ballarat head coach), After this he responded greatly winning the fothergill-round medal in the VFL for the best under 23's player in the VFL.
As has been talked about on here obviously his greatest strength is his speed, agility and mobility (His very very hard to tackle, Seems quite strong through the hips).
But one of his strengths I think has been quite underestimated (and one of the major reasons our coaches looked at him) is his ability to listen and take on instructions, At every turn he has had over the last couple of years at Ballarat he has managed to improve and this is due to his work rate and his ability to take in all advice and instructions.

There are some negatives to him though, I don't personally think his kick is as good as some rate it to be (Yes he is a fantastic shot at goal), But his field passing can be a little inconsistant at times (Has a slight tendency to fluff a fair few passes, Or just throw the ball on the boot as far as possible without looking up), Overall his disposal is still quite good just not elite like how some people have made it out to be.

The other aspect of his game I would like for him to work on would be his ability to rack up the ball, His two highest disposal games this year were only 22 and 23 disposals and I personally think he will need to improve his ability to win his own ball at AFL level (I certainly think he will though).

Personally I had him going at between 30-40 in the draft but I can see why we pounced earlier than expected on him, For one our recruiters have been looking at him for a very very long time (In fact I had mentioned it in a comment over a month ago http://www.bigfooty.com/forum/threads/the-early-trade-scouting-thread.943803/page-20#post-25899376 )
Secondly he probably has more raw potential than most of the players in the draft, He has only been playing the game since he was 16 and has a lot of scope for improvement.
And finally he is the type of player that can slot straight into our team and help immediately, I think next year we are going to have a few more teams tagging Jetta and a few more of our outside runners out of games, So it probably won't hurt to have one more just to help out. (Not to mention he is very versatile (Can play through the midfield, On a half back flank or in the forward line as a third tall)).

Overall I feel as if he was a very good selection and someone that was really targeted at the start of the draft period.
After being told we were looking at him at the start of the year I have paid a bit more attention to him than I usually do to our youngsters (So this players review is a bit longer than our others), So when I heard us read out his name I was pretty stoked I am not going to lie (Even if I feel we could of possibly gotten him at our second pick).

Harrison Marsh

Going to be honest here haven't seen a lot of him besides from the under 18's championships and a few highlights from Colts level.
Rebounding defender with good speed and above average disposal, Although at under 18's he played more as a shut down third defender (Didn't do a bad job, Just would of liked to have seen him in the midfield or in a more attacking role).
According to some people was another player we were out and specifically targeted. Seems to fill a need that we will have in a few years time when the likes of Shaw, Mattner and Malceski retire.
Overall I feel as if I can't really comment on him too much as I haven't seen enough, Would of liked him to have been given a bit more freedom at the championships as I felt as if he was holding himself a back a little at times due to his coaches instructions.

Seems like a likely pick though and he has some pretty decent speed and smarts,

Tim Membrey

Wow where to start.... didn't honestly see us picking him up but he was very very impressive throughout the last two years I am not going to lie.

The first thing I think about when I hear about Membrey is CLUTCH!!! This boy really thrives under pressure and the bigger the moment the better he seems to be.

I am not as worried about his size as some other people are personally (and whilst the Darling similarities are there personally I think he would almost be suited to a Fevola leading out of the goal square type role).

He has great body work and is an excellent contested mark, If we can put on another 10 kilo's without letting him lose much speed he would be a great height for playing key position, Not to mention I think he is the best shot at goal I have seen come through under 18's in the last few years at least (Can't remember anyone slotting goals from outside of 50 with so much ease).

He certainly leads by example on the field, Has a great work rate and although he can get pretty irritated when things don't go his way he has more of a tendency to get annoyed at himself rather than his teammates.

There are some reasons he slipped though,

He was rather impressive when getting thrown in the midfield at under 18's level, But I am not sure whether he could do this at AFL level as he really doesn't have the endurance or the body type to play there.

He doesn't have a fantastic leap at the ball and doesn't seem to have the longest arm length in the world (Although that actually may make him great foil for Reid in the future).

And the last one is it is kind of hard to see where some huge improvement is going to come from... If we can greatly improve his endurance that will certainly help... But could this also cause him to have less strength... And whilst he usually uses more subtle body work to out mark his opponents rather than raw strength, at AFL level he will need to be stronger through his hips and legs.

Overall an exceptional selection that both our coaching staff and recruiters expected not to be there.

Mathew Dick

The player that has all of the skill set, The body, The smarts and the work ethic, But I feel as if some of his coaches at TAC level and at under 18's level have really dicked around with him a little too much.

He has some great movement and a good kick and personally I was looking forward to seeing him used in an attacking mindset on the field... So you can imagine my disappointment when I saw him being used as an undersized key defender at the championships this year.
Don't get me wrong he didn't do a bad job in the slightest... And I think his coaches were trying to show his defensive game to recruiters but all they did in the end was dick around with his draft chances in the end, As I think most people seeing him having an impact at AFL level in a more attacking mindset.

Had a very good draft combine, Tested well on nearly everything and I personally think the only reason he didn't really shoot up the draft order a bit more this year was because he just didn't really kick on enough from last year, In fact he actually had a very similar year to last year.

Good thing is he performed very well for the Cannons this year and last year and was very highly regarded by their coaching staff, And he was very consistant for them as well he just performs his role week in adn week out.

He can certainly improve on his handballing, I felt as if a few times he would give the ball off to someone under pressure instead of looking up the field and trying to just get the ball out of defence.

I really do think that Dick can play in the seniors next year just seems ready for it in all honesty. (P.S sorry about a couple of those really bad puns there :p)

Yep, very much appreciated.

Now just patiently waiting for interviews on the swans site. I'll be disappointed if they're not up by the end of the day.

Awesome review bonz. Towers sounds like the kind of player who would fit in well with our game plan, not a star, but can come in and play a role. I'm getting that same vibe from your description of Marsh.

Membrey seems more of an unknown quantity (as are all players in the draft to some extent!!), players can slip down in the draft order for a number of reasons, but for a pick in the mid-40s most definitely worth it!

So... 2 pictures of the draftees and they've been here 3 days now. What are our guys doing?

Membrey actually reminds me a bit of Richo, hopefully with better kicking.

But yeah Towers and Membrey look like they could slot straight into the team.

He doesn't have the same athleticism as Richo (Which isn't saying anything bad about Membrey in the slightest he actually has decent athleticism, Richo though especially when he first came out onto the scene was one of the most athletic forwards we have seen in the last 30 years).

Yeah Bonz like CAS picked up, I more meant in looks.
