2013 Fixture Discussion

I'm supportive of Fitzroy fans and getting our club more involved with them, and the Fitzroy connections. But taking anger out of the club over petty crap isn't going to give them any incentive to change.

No disrespect chopper, but I'd hardly consider the jumper and the fixture being petty to Lions fans and particularly old Fitzroy people.

I agree with all that, but especially in this case, it appears the merger agreement is worth bugger all.

There's a few that have thought that for a considerable time. Events just keep confirming that for those that do.

As a Brisbane fan, and someone who is new the the sport, i personally love having the Fitzroy heritage to our club, and i hate seeing it wasted or worse yet, ignore like it has been in years past. Whilst steps have been taken to reconnect by the club currently, we must continue to keep encouraging them to do so. There are several things like the fixture that are outside of their control though.

But there are plenty of things within their control. The jumper and logo for example. This has been discussed ad nauseum, so I won't go into the details. There's plenty of other things that can be done as well.

Even though we are still part Fitzroy, we are based in Brisbane and are a Brisbane club, and the focus needs to be there first and foremost.

But we're a two town team aren't we? At least that's the rhetoric. What we really are is a Brisbane team with a slight Melbourne connection. A connection incidentally, that is weaker than what the Swans have.

I'm sure the club will be trying to add some value for Melb members in light of having less games.

We'll see. The obvious one would be wearing a Fitzroy guernsey for one or more Melbourne based games. Do-able and definitely within the club's control.

The other part, i don't think it is in the clubs best interest to go on a public campaign against the AFL over it. It creates negative attention for them, and will still change nothing.

We'll leave that for the supporters then.

So you think it is unreasonable for the club to detail this as part of its explanation as to why they didn't receive what they requested?

I think its unnecessary. And, as I said, the club's role should be to advocate on behalf of its supporters to the AFL, not the other way around.

Its hard for the club to have a go at the AFL for breaking the agreement when we disregard it ourselves:

Paddle pop Lion
Melbourne's home game at the GABBA.

The club can't go to the AFL and say "We want you to honor this agreement, and just turn a blind eye when we break it"

Good point.

It is somewhat hypocritical, but if lack of hypocrisy is pre-requisite to doing anything in the AFL then someone better turn off the lights.

Nevertheless the overall point is really the golden rule, treat others as you would like to be treated yourself. We didn't treat our own supporters properly, yet we ask the AFL to treat them properly in accordance with the agreement.

Exactly.

I'm almost surprised its not 3 games and we've also been sent to New Zealand to play because its "close to Melbourne" like Tassie is. Seriously.

The incentive to be a Melbourne based member is now down to "c'mon you're not supporting the club if you aren't". Keep in mind that most of our games are on Foxtel - so there is a subscription there if you want to see all the Lions games at home, and a membership (that gets you the opportunity to see your club 4 times in Melb plus a trip to Geelong) that just doesn't deliver based on the cost. It will be vastly cheaper again to just pay at the gate, especially if you can only attend 2-3 out of the 4 plus Geelong. That's leaves the emotional incentive I've mentioned above, but our emotions are still a little raw down here because of the godforsaken Paddlepop.

Clearly the AFL doesn't give a fat rats clacker. And while LI and Malcolm Holmes have publicly said the club oppose the AFL's decision, I would like to see some passion and spirit in that rebuttal of the AFL's decision. As a PR exercise, its coming across to me as "we sheepishly asked", rather than a "we heavily lobbied, here is what we did, hear is what we tried and offered, but it's wholly and solely the AFL's decision to screw you Melbourne folks over".

Disappointing result.

I agree with everything you say there Adey. I got criticised earlier for stating that I wouldn't purchase a membership next year. Why would you if you are a Victorian supporter ? The Geelong game may as well be in New Zealand. Trying to get a seat there is tough & expensive. That leaves 4 games. Ok so your membership probably will get you into other games. But I really couldn't be bothered watching Richmond or Carlton or especially Melbourne games at the MCG.

We're just better off being "casual" supporters & pay at the gate, for next year at least.

I want to see the club show some passion & disappointment here. That is sadly lacking in Holmes's statement.

Unfortunately the only thing that this issue is going to do is to cause a divide between the two membership bases. I don't want to get in arguments with Qld based members/supporters, but that is inevitable I believe.

About to go and buy my plane tickets for all the Melbourne games!

Then if I have any left over, the Port and Sydney games are next. Will probably have to wait until next pay to organise the NT, WA and Tassie games.

I don't care what anyone says. I WILL make it to EVERY Lions game in 2013.

That's never stopped me before.

I'm actually quite hurt by that statement.
Pretty obvious tongue in cheek comment.

If only I wasn't a poor uni student, I'd make a few interstate trips myself.

Lol! I've said a lot worse about Joelly before Kez & you didn't bat an eyelid. Think of the Frequent Flyer points you'll accumulate ?

It was more the insinuation that I would put a petty crush above the Club.

Anyway, I signed up for Virgin Australia's frequent flyer program, whatever they call it. I know they're in bed with the AFL so they should be good.

I bet the AFL are screwing Virgin too, like they're screwing us ?

Well, I have the Sydney, North and Essendon games booked. Got the flight to Sydney for $79 per flight and the Melbourne games for $99 a flight. Will wait for more specials before booking more flights, but right now I'm pumped.

Normally I don't agree with you views on things LL but on this one I agree completely. The way he's spoken about it to the media might seem minor, but Holmes is quoted on the Lions site as saying:

Malcolm Holmes said:
“Overall we are very pleased with the 2013 fixture, which represents a good balance between our football and commercial requirements”

It's a complete slap in the face to Melbourne supporters the words 'very pleased' should not be used by the CEO in relation to this fixture. End of story.

Better terms include:
  • Extremely disappointed
  • Utterly dismayed
  • Total disbelief
I assume when he said it meets our commercial requirements that the AFL paid the club out for playing in Darwin instead of Melbourne and more again for playing in Tasmania.

And coming out afterwards on social media and trying to "spin up" how strongly the club tried to get the 6 games is Melbourne is complete PR crap. If we tried so hard put the CEO on the public record saying that he can't understand why the AFL are unable to meet a simple request that honours the history of our merged clubs. Obviously it's driven by money, and he knows that and we know that, so he should come out and say it. "The AFL are more interested in milking dollars out of the fans they've got rather than trying to win back the respect and loyalty of the fans they mistreated during the creation of our club." Now that would've been a quote that would have achieved very little, but I think would've scored significant brownie points with the old Fitzroy fans.

This brown nosing doesn't earn respect from the bigger clubs or the AFL and it doesn't appeal to the members and fans, so who the hell is he targeting it at?

Being a bit harsh on Mr Holmes I think.

I think you'll find a few people agreeing with you here karix; not just those based in Melbourne either.

If only Malcolm Holmes was as polished & media savvy as Rob Kerr. It might have diffused some of the initial angst.

I just hope he doesn't follow in Bower's footsteps.

Don't know if this is the right section, but when will the memberships be available? cant renew because i haven't been a brisbane member since 2007 :p
