Tokyo Police Club have dropped the first new song of theirs in a while. New album next year. They're a pretty unfashionable band but they're someone I'll always have time for... anyway, this new one is pretty ambitious, a three-parter that gets so beautiful about 4:00 in.

...and listened to Danny Brown - Old again yesterday for the first time in a month or so and, ****, it's even more fun than I remembered it. Introspective as well. I think I underestimated it in terms of being in my favourite list. Awesome album.

Nice to see someone else mention Beach Fossils. Good to see one of those hazy summer bands actually step it up. I was listening to Careless a lot when I first moved to Melbourne and it's a pretty special song for me – love the guitar tone and how hedonistic it sounds. Disappointed I didn't catch 'em this year but that night was probably the best of my life even skimping on them...

Also, how did I forget Mac DeMarco? Should be seeing him tonight if not for being back in WA.

A$AP Rocky too, but A$AP Ferg had some pretty good moments. Love the abrasiveness of it.

Just heard Childish Gambino's newy as well and that could very well make an appearance.

Yeah, I went to see Beach Fossils with my lady friend and it was a fun, fun night. Was really excited to see them and they didn't disappoint!

Reflektor and Trouble Will Find Me were the big movers upwards, with Savages and QOTSA paying the price and falling out of the top 10.

I'm going through LP's right now and I may as well assign a few ratings off one listen.

Danny Brown - Old - Loved it; clinical and clever as ever. A bit of progression from XXX too, which was awesome. This years 'Good Kid.'

9/10

Protest The Hero - Volition - Pretty much what you come to expect from PTH. Nothing groundbreaking but still very decent.

7/10

Steven Wilson - The Raven Who Refused To Sing - I wish I was a bigger Porcupine Tree fan but this guy continues churning out beautiful music. Got some heavy mid 70's prog vibes.

7.5/10

Janelle Monae - The Electric Lady - Very cool. A little more focused than the ArchAndroid but overall probably not as strong.

7/10

I've got quite a few to go.

The final Top 20 - Critics Album of the Year, for anyone that was still interested:

20. Lorde and John Grant (27 points)
19. Janelle Monae (29)
18. QOTSA (31)

13 was a 4 way tie on 35 points:
Danny Brown, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Savages and The Knife
12. Kurt Vile (38)
11. Chance the Rapper (39)
10. David Bowie (41)
8 was a 2 way tie on 44 points:
Arctic Monkeys and HAIM

6. The National (48)
5. Disclosure (49)

Did anyone hear listen to Julia Holter or Laura Marling's albums this year? I gave each a listen and didn't quite get into it like others did but they might need to be listened to multiple times for them to click.
I liked the Julia Holter album, you're right though it's probably not as good as the last one (forget what it was called, something ancient greek I think). But, "Hello Stranger" was probably my favourite track this year.

I wasn't overly impressed with Laura Marling's last effort after really liking "I Speak Because I Can", so I haven't gone out of my way to check out the latest.

Since people are putting up lists here's my favourites from 2013:

1. The Drones - I See Seaweed
2. Kvelertak - Meir
3. Dawn Richard - Goldenheart
4. Neko Case - The Worse Things Get ...
5. Cut Copy - Free Your Mind
6. Pantha du Prince and The Bell Laboratory- Elements of Light
7. Oneohtrix point never - R Plus 7
8. Grumbling Fur - Glynnaestra
9. Janelle Monae - The Electric Lady
10. Okkervill River - The Silver Gymnasium

The Villagers, Boards of Canada, Underground Lovers, John Grant, Abbe May all put out great albums too. Loads of others I'm sure that I've missed.

A bit late, and in no particular order, but releases from the following

Laurel Halo, Heatsick, Julia Holter, OPN, James Ferraro, Dean Blunt

I know its late, but everyone pleaseeeee listen to "Laura Stevenson - Wheel".
My album of the year, incredible, you WON'T regret it, trust me :)

Been listening to Electric Lady a lot over the last few months, and I now honestly think it is superior to ArchAndroid.

ArchAndroid
had that stellar and inventive opening suite II, but I never really rated suite III. I think Electric Lady is a fuller, more complete and more focused experience.
