My mistake. Tonight has changed my mind on type of player I want. Flossy type again. Our inside mids are putrid. Just awful.

I won't argue. We need more midfield depth that is certain and if it nets us another Vlastuin, Ellis, Conca type, I am all for it. Cotchin and Martin add to that. Deledio needs to be moved to the Half Back line. We lack good kickers out of the backline and run and zip. I don't care about individual accolades, it is his best position for the team.

I still think we lack game changers, Edwards, King and Nahas are not up to it. Grigg is not up to it against the better teams. We need along with inside winners, outside class and skill.

I really have high hopes for Helbig also for an inside midfielder role.

Agree with Deledio. I'm sick of us drafting flankers. Deledio is a guy who can play midfield who you push out onto the flanks like Geelong. Edwards was good as a forward who could pinch hit midfield. Not very good as a full time mid. Mids, mids, mids in the draft. And play our KPP.

Yeah agree. Midfielders this draft. Let's try and trade into the draft also.

We have a core, need to build it through the draft.

What do we trade though? Not sure how big he is but I'd rather have a Chris Cain type on the rookie list than a Lonergan/Petterd. Edit: I'd probably boo him if he didn't lower his shorts a bit and untuck his shirt.

Foley, maybe? Jackson for a later pick or upgrade slightly later picks. Newman deserves finals footy, won't get it with us, trade to a team challenging?

Chris Cain, I have never rated as AFL quality when I have seen him to be honest but I haven't seen him too often. I could be mistaken. On the right track though, the VFL, SANFL and WAFL have some better rookie options for us.

Neither had I but apparently looked good this year. Hard to gauge off today. We'd probably turn him into a dud. :p

We should have traded Foley a while ago. Jackson is a FA so won't get anything. Maybe hope he leaves and don't pick up a FA ourselves. I reckon we'll play finals this year or next for Newy. My concern is we will drop back out shortly after and won't contend.

I still think Foley holds 2nd round pick value for a challenger.

Forgot about Jacksons Free Agency. Maybe we could do a deal like Essendon and Port with Monfries. If anyone wants this guy.

We can't guarantee finals for Newy. Not like some teams. A lot would love to have him.
 
To the more learned people in here is Francis Jackson the man to build a premiership list?
Seems to me his drafting 2nd round onwards is fairly average
Almost seems with our 2nd rounders he likes to take risks instead of playing it safe with well rounded footballers , though i may be being harsh..
Thoughts? Any rumours about us looking for a replacement or do we think he is the man..

Would be nice if we played his picks after Round One.

I see Carlton added the Geelong 2IC for recruiting. We need to keep investing with the best talent we can get into recruiting and developing. Keep plowing money into these two areas.

We need more people helping him. Pretty sure it was 2009 when we added 2 more. I'm only guessing here but I'd imagine we'd still have one of the most under resourced departments going around. Bring a few more full time guys in from the successful clubs. And as TB said would be nice if they got a game. Griff/Astbury/Dea should all be playing in their 4th season.

Have been hearing the club rate this years draft pool lower than they did last years and they did not like that draft pool at all. Therefore, if true, you can be sure we will not be trading unless its into first round draft pick territory.

Geelong find beauties in the third and fourth rounds of weak and strong drafts. This mentality of trading out of drafts have to stop.

Weak draft? We can still improve our list if we recruit right. It's not hard to get better than White, Nahas, McGuane, Jackson etc etc.

Enough of recycled mantra now, utilise the draft.

wether we need to replace francis or simply resource him better we have to improve our recruiting
i just hope the club realises this and doesn't overrate our list and think we just need better coaching/dev to have success

The sublimely-talented Dayle Garlett was overlooked in last year's draft because of off-field issues, but his brilliant form this year with Swan Districts could force AFL clubs to reconsider.

Garlett, 19, was again one of Swan Districts' best players, kicking four of his team's 10 goals in loss to Subiaco.

After six WAFL appearances this season, he is averaging 20.5 disposals and two goals a game.

We're too passive in our drafting, bar McDonough selection.
In all seriousness how high do people think Lonergan's ceiling is in terms of skill level? In my honest opinion it won't go any higher than a poor man's Martin.
Compare that to Garlett's and you'll see that it's 10 times better. Risks = Higher rewards if it works out, and if you look at it we basically wasted a rookie pick.

People will say well everyone turned him down. So bloody what. Back yourself in. He is too talented to not be on our list. He'd be in our top ten skilled footballers at the club. Already.

He'd be only one of very few to have that blitz pace and one of very few with that magic factor.

We have to take risks if we want to catch the likes of Geelong, Hawthorn, Sydney. These are the bench marks.
