Unless Morris gets injured , I really cant see a spot in the Richmond best 25 - 30 players for Matt Thomas TBH

Just seems like a backup for our backup, Would much rather use that spot for a speedy small skilled foward which is a need

I think it's as a one year rookie. Can clear him out in a strong draft next year.

Little point getting one if the quality isn't there. Thomas on the other hand is a known player who like Lonergan, would be instant cover for one of our experienced players going down and would also provide some experience for the VFL side to show the kids the way they need to go about it as a professional player.

You see this is where i struggle with opinions like this RT with No dis respect intended so please dont take it the wrong way

Eddie Betts , Stephen Milne are good examples where they were seen as quality not being there and after a couple of years and Development in the right envoirment become the best small fowards in the League

we also did this with McDonough and is looking very good so far , But with Thomas he is a known Player thats 26 years old and deemed not good enough for a club who i believe are behind us in both quality and development

I fail to see who Thomas is instant cover for to be honest Dea,Darrou,Batchelor are all about the same if not questinably better level in defence and We have Arnot,Helbig Williams plus who we will bring in with #12 and maybe #50 in the midfield

Thomas will help us with our VFL team but thats about all,Better off getting a speculative small foward that may end up showing something for the future
Realistically Richmonds window will open 2015 and we should be planing these selections for 2015-2018

You could argue that we 'need' a big bodied inside mid to replace Tuck and help protect our younger mids.

Sent from my GT-N5110 using Tapatalk

Our Younger mids are just as big bodied as Matt Thomas to be honest
Arnot,Helbig,Vlastuin,Conca,Ellis,Martin are all about the same size or will be in 2014 and Foley,Jackson,Cotchin, delidio wont have any benefit from Thomas being there i wouldnt think.

When I mention the quality not being there, I'm not saying we shouldn't take a small forward, more that we shouldn't go taking one just because we need one and they are available. To put it another way, if we're down to our last pick in the rookie draft and the choice was the known quality that is Thomas and a speculative small forward who need a heap of time and development put into them, then I'd much prefer the club to take Thomas. Being the 44th player on the list he isn't exactly costing anyone an opportunity as we've taken everyone else that we rate higher than him and the speculative kid.

As I said above Thomas would be a Lonergan type rookie addition, might only be here for 1 season, but in the unlikely event that we do need to turn to the last guy on the list to fill in for a few games in the AFL he isn't going to be found wanting.

7. Brisbane Lions - Cameron McCarthy
8. North Melbourne - Luke McDonald
9. Melbourne - Nathan Freeman
10. Collingwood - James Aish

You see this is what troubles me RT - You want to recuit a player that is just a stop gap for 1 year that as you said is a known quality which has shown he doesnt offer enough at AFL level.

The speculative pick kid might just be the next Betts/Milne or even a Foley type kid that can come through to establish himself
McDonough is the exact type we should be looking for at these selections

We dont need average backup players we need to always go for quality that will improve our list with youth unless its a glaring deficiency on our list that needs adressing

I just hope that Carltank's pick doesn't turn out better than ours.

But the I remember their recruiters are sillys
Bootsma, Watson, Lucas and Yarran are their first round draft picks from 2008-2011. I just hope they don't ruin another young talent in Menzel. Their record of hits in the first round is appalling. The only ones who have come on are their first round picks and its impossible to stuff those up unless you're Melbourne.

Difference is Mcdonough was a pick in the national draft, where as I'm talking about taking Thomas as our final rookie pick only if he is considered to be better than the other options

I presume you meant No.1 draft picks.

Its what i don't get about Carlton their drafting is horrible yet how they've made finals 4 of the last 5 years is just insane.

I get your point and some circumstances I would agree. I think it depends on your senior list demographic( and in position) which determines these types of decisions. For us, our core midfield is essentially young and still maturing. In this regard this is where a Thomas type selection is warranted. If your looking in say 3 years time when most of the core is afl mature then a young rookie might be a better way to go. For me its all about balance. We have mixed our RL with half kids and half mature which I think is fine. Our Achilles heel is still CP's and we have tried to protect wins by having these players in case of injury/suspension that will help with this issue. I think we have done this the balanced way at this point.

He adds nothing to our list

Disagree with the last bit. He is backup in case our inside mids cant play. This is still our biggest issue in our game plan. If we cant win the ball, we get done.

Didn't he win the Magarey medal??

For mine its about what he can add as a leader and on field type coach in the VFL team. He can also step in if needed at AFL level a couple times for the season.

Nothing wrong with adding a guy to the list who provides leadership, coaching and a person who fits in well with the group especially if its a minimum pick like a rookie. It is kind of like Brad Miller who was recruited as much for his coaching and leadership as he was for Pia.
