Longer isn't exactly experienced, though.

Yep, I know that. Never mentioned Longer.

I'm doing a review now of our year and am thinking getting one may be the way to go. Longer would be good but not for next year. Although if we truly believe our Premiership window opens in 2015/16 then he would make sense.

2015 is too early IMO unless Swans Hawks Geelong , Freo fall away by then/

2016/2017 is more realistic IMO

Not sure there are many available experienced rucks... other than Essendon ones.

He's training and doing rehab at Collingwood.

I'm surprised that the AFL would allow that at this time of year given the exclusive access the Pies would be given.

Also if the Pies did pick him up, they would have to have one of the shortest 22s in the comp. Blair, Elliot, Kennedy, Dwyer and J.Thomas all 177cm or under!

I think Astbury is better than Griff. He's actually shown AFL quality. Griffiths whilst I keep hearing this potential thing, it's no good that he can kick the ball like a mule and run like the wind for a tall if he doesn't actually get the ball. He's also physically weak for a 200cm 100kg guy and his defensive game is average. I think we should grab something for him whilst we can rather than get pick 70 next year when he shows nothing again. I also don't think Astbury would get us a pick early enough for that to happen. Mid 30's or a player swap for another reserves type.

I worry about Astbury's speed long term. He gets that back he'll be very good CHB

I think people are forgetting some of Ben Griffiths games in 2012. His performances against Hawthorn, Adelaide especially were very very good. He does need to get into the game more, but he had the highest percentage of halved contests for a defender in 2012 i.e. he neither won or lost the contest.

This year has been such a disappointing year for him and he was getting better and better each year until this year when lost the plot completely. But it comes down to the risk of can we help him to pull it together next year (especially if we get Andy Collins in development role) and get that potential out of him or cash in early and hope he doesn't Jay Schulz us.

But while Astbury has shown more i'm an unabashed Griffiths fan and hope we can get the best out of him. I also thinking swapping him to permanent forward will help.

Astbury was never quick so as long as he gets back close to normal, his football smarts should see him through. We need to get some more KPP's soon but he is a good enough back-up KPD. If he ever becomes more than that then it's a win.

Not forgetting them at all. He played a solid game on Roughead and Tippett. Both of whom were average last year. If he shut them both down this year we'd be jizzing our pants over it. :p

To me, he just looks scared to get the ball and he's just very, very uncompetitive. Makes Jack Watts look like a competitive beast and that frustrates me and from what I'm told Dimma is sick of it. Every year Dimma pencils him in for Round 1 and then he plays like a blouse and if he isn't traded he'll be given one last chance.

TBH I'd be happy for him to do a Schulz on us. But get something for him now rather than nothing and then it bites us. If we got a decent player or pick in return for Schulz would his form for Port hurt? Not at all. It hurts because we got pick 71 and bloody Mitch Farmer.

I've been saying for ages I don't care which end they play him just leave him there. But I think he has too many fundamental flaws to really make a spot his own.

I should also say the fact he isn't commanding a spot in the senior team isn't what annoys me about him. It's the fact that he doesn't command a spot in the VFL team and can't get a kick at that level.

How good would it be if Vickery stepped up and could play more ruck time and a youngster like McBean/Elton started to tear up the forward line. I know everyone is excited about McBean but I think Elton will play a lot next year.

I have really high hopes for Elton, This kid could become our Monster Swingman similar to Carlisle

We really do need 1 of Griffiths/Astbury/Elton to really take the next step and cement their spot in the team - Hopefully 2 of them

Just looking through the games and doing my own review of what we need, I noticed the Maric/Stephenson combination was undefeated. Sorry if this has been stated I'm just discovering that fact now myself.

In saying that, I don't think The Big O is the way to go, but I am thinking an experienced ruckman may be the way to go. Maric is capable forward and I don't know if Vickery will be a capable ruckman.

We are approaching our window now. We got spanked in our losses from that ruck position and looked most strong when we had that area dominated. Our midfield with a couple more cogs and experience can be the best in the land. I'm for getting an experienced ruck to team with Maric.

Imo Longer showed how good he will be in the preseason and he's only been in the system for 2 years. I would like to get him and if that means Vickery and him compete for the same spot in the interim then so be it. Unfortunately I still also see our inside mid position as another must have and adams is the man.

Agree. Hoping Elton can hold down CHF and we can get Astbury's speed back with a pre-season or 2 because they can swap with each other.

Just wondering what you guys would think would be a very good draft for us?

My absolute dream draft would be:

First Rounder: Sheed or Freeman
Second Rounder: Darcy Cameron
Third Rounder: Jarman Impey
Fourth Rounder: Dwayne Wilson

Also, wondering on your thoughts of Knightmare's draft for us:

First Round: Christian Salem
Second Round: Luke Reynolds
Third Round: Mitch Thorp
Fourth Round: Hugh Curnow

I'd be pretty happy with that, especially with Luke Reynolds. Very similar player to Paul Chapman from reports. Mitch Thorp is an interesting one. I think he would fit our side well.

Yep I reckon our window will be around then after our newer draftees have a few seasons under their belt.

1st one is a dream. :p Would be lucky that a) Impey was there at pick 47 and ridiculously lucky to have Wilson in the 4th round. If we keep our first pick I'd love Sheed and I'm starting to like Freeman a bit more as he started to get more ball later in the year which was my query on him. Was talking him up at Champs time but I really wanted him to get more ball and he just wasn't doing it. Cameron is a must get for me and I'd love Impey or Wilson at that 3rd pick. Really doubt we get both.

Of Knightmare's I like Salem. Think he'd add a lot for us. Reynolds is a very different player than Chapman for mine. Trying to think who he reminds me of though. Can't think of it right now. Think there'll be better options at our 2nd pick. Thorp is a no for me. Again I think there are better options there. I'd take him as a rookie but no earlier. Curnow is an interesting one and I like the fit for us.

That's why I said it was a dream draft. We get all 4 of those, our window will be well and truly open in 2016.

Salem is the exact type of player FJ has gone for. No frills, solid 200+ gamer. Loves the hard stuff, and hunts the man as hard as he does the ball.

I've seen different reports about Reynolds. Some say he is similar to Chapman, others say he is almost a similar player to Trent McKenzie. Either way, I'd be happy, with Dusty and Reynolds as half forwards.

I agree, a third rounder is too high for Thorp. Would take him in the PSD or rookie draft. I think a a forward line combo of Thorp, Riewoldt and Vickery would wreak havoc. Our third rounder I'd be willing to give Dayle Garlett a go, like we did with Troy Taylor. Both immensely talented, both troubled, but the difference being Garlett loves Melbourne, so the go-home factor is only slight.

Don't know much about Curnow though.

And I really think Freeman will become one of the best in the draft, and is a genuine game changer. I shudder to think in 2-3 years time what a midfield core of Freeman, Cotchin and Martin would do to opposition midfields. Judd, Kerr and Cousins spring to mind.

If we keep our first pick, I'm pretty sure the player would be Salem that we choose.

Think he would be another no nonsense selection that could step up and be a good player for us straight away next season.

I hope our pre season is great for Conca, Ellis, Vlastuin and these three along with Cotchin, Deledio and Martin step up another level. If we are able to nab Taylor Adams for Foley and a second and draft a Salem that midfield is looking powerful. No Tuck means depth has been lowered so we need to add to it.

Have high hopes Arnot can play that defensive forward role next year and rotate into that midfield and Matt McDonough steps up. I am quering the spot for Shane Edwards, can he be a 30 goals a year small forward or do we trade him and have the likes of McDonough, King, Arnot and have Dusty spend more time forward?

I see Foley and Shane Edwards as tradable if we get some good pieces. I want us to trade Jake Batchelor to get back into that second round if we trade it out. I'm conducting my own review and should have my opinion in more depth soon.

I am hoping we can land a good piece in the midfield either through the draft or trade or both. Taylor Adams and Christian Salem added to our list would be dynamite. In my opinion.

Arnot would be a great def forward I agree, he would be pushing Kingy out that's probably his only hurdle to being in the starting 22. We should expect 12+ game for young Matty next season.

At the start of the year I thought with Foley being a leader of the club he was semi in the untouchable group... but after the dropping in the finals, not so much. I love Nath but if we can get something decent for him, I'm all for it. No sentimete in football anymore, if it will bridge the gap of the top tier teams. Go for it.

Foley is probably in the similar position to Nicky Dal. Want's to stay at the club, but if the club see trading them the best option for the club, I don't see Nath disputing it.

I'm not sure how Reynolds resembles Trent McKenzie. I think Knightmare read that Reynolds has a big kick on him, so just picked the first player in the AFL that he could think of with a cannon - hence, McKenzie. If anything, he is a taller version of what Tapscott and Veszpremi could have been. In Richmond terms, I tend to think he'd be an Aaron Edwards replacement rather than a partner for Martin across half forward. Alternatively, you'd develop him into a Newman type defender, but I don't see Reynolds as having the midfield game.

Here's an interesting hypothetical.
Martin goes to Melb - we get pick 2.
Word is that if GWS keep pick 1, they'll take Scharenberg.
This gives us free access to either Aish or Boyd.
Who would you pick and why?
Boyd.

Monster FF who free's JR up to play 3rd tall. I think JR needs that... probably also means we need a ready made midfield replacement. Makes Adams more important, if we can trade pick 11/12 for him.

Boyd but I think Leon Cameron wants Boyd. Though Scharenberg is a good fit.
