For the record if Richmond want to draft a tall midfielder, that's fine, but rarely are players called too short for AFL unless they are say 175cm or under. And there's plenty of good 180cm+ players in this draft. And I'd hate for a good player to be passed up because he's only 182cm or something.

The recruiters and clubs agree that drafting those under 6 Foot is left to the later rounds unless extreme ability and talent is shown, even Trent Cotchin expressed relief at passing the 6 Foot barrier, any sport of which there is confrontation between two, height is a huge advantage.

Just 2 drafts ago 8 of the top 17 were sub 6-footers in a draft where one club had majority of picks. Coniglio, Wingard, Sumner, Greene, Adams, D.Smith, Ellis, C.Smith. Then Tom Mitchell who was considered a top 5 pick as well. Clubs take best available early.

Less respected?

Yeah, Hawthorn's midfield isn't that impressive bar Mitchell and Hodge. And Hodge often plays back. Oh and Mitchell is a midget!

It is widely attributed to the success is that of there midfielders heights, they may have great endurance yet you can't say that the height of these players did not have a major influence on the fortunes of the year they had.

Widely attributed? By who?

Having a tall midfield will soon be the norm within the AFL, having height paired with ability is a mixture for success. Being small in stature and having the ability will allow you to succeed yet that will soon be not enough as having to compete with athletes that dominant in every athletic aspect whilst paired with a height advantage lead to the taller man's success.

I'm still not convinced. It's hard to find a tall midfielder with good foot skills and inside ability, they're fairly rare. Many of the taller types are outside, so I'm not sure how the AFL will suddenly be dominated by tall midfielders, there just isn't the supply.

AFL is rapidly changing, the days of 30km games being ran by midfielders are long gone, the rotations are increasing albeit the cap will slow the game will adapt to rotate through the forward and back quicker and more efficient. Repeat efforts at maximum capacity is in vogue and will stay in vogue for a long duration of time, "short bursts" is a term that is being more commonly used as it is those who are refreshed that ultimately come out on top.

AFL midfielders are running more than ever before. Sure, the interchange cap may change this to an extent, but this game is turning more into a running game, if it hasn't already.

Time will tell, those taller in stature are becoming more and more valued as a commodity, a tall midfielder is a gem and the game is evolving with those tall midfielders becoming the centrepiece.

C.Wingard, Greene, Adams and Ellis are the only ones to have shown consistently the ability to play at the elite level while the others have showed in spurts the ability, albeit those that are taller may not always succeed more times that not those with the height win out.

With all due respect KingJ I think you're talking out of your behind.

Who are you to say that? You are differing from what clubs and recruiters are evolving towards, our coach, Damien Hardwick as per previous posts is looking for tall midfielders, list managers are looking at athletes with height. Just wait and see pal.

That's 4 more than you could say of the taller ones. Tyson, Hoskin-Elliot, Buntine, Haynes, Docherty. None have shown anything really. I also think you're being harsh on Coniglio and also in particular Tom Mitchell who is an absolute jet. If two players are equal/close then fair enough take the taller player but you always go best available regardless of height.

King is right to an extent, the game is definitely getting taller - the next level in AFL will be having midfielders/rovers (say a Naitanui-type) who have the skills to beat the smalls at ground level a regular occurrence. Taller people are faster and have better athletic ability, it's a general rule.

But this is the thing, u-18 teams will pick taller players in the future, so Richmond will be provided with a bigger range of taller players, but as tigs said, it's always best available.

You present excellent points from the past. You highlighted players of which aren't midfielders which is the area of which this debate is about, obviously the more short players the higher success they will have through averages.
Previous drafts have been favourable towards those types, in future those drafts will become scarce. Picking solely on height is aiding a disaster, having height as one of your key draft qualities and indicators is a must.

I would like to draw everybody's attention to a particular player that is a must get for our wonderfull club - DARCY CAMERON

Now let me start by stateing that i have never layed eyes on this kid in real life so would love all the draft / junior watchers who know about this kid and have watched him to have an input about his game , ability , character anything possible - But just to bring attention to what the 'Experts on bigfooty drafts board think please continue to read.

Personally, I rate him as the #1 ruck in the draft and by quite some way too. He has been having a huge impact leading the ruck back home for Claremont, and what sets him apart from others is that he is just as good around the ground. He is a very athletic young ruckman running through the midfield, who can also go forward and take a strong grab. I think he plays a little like Zac Clarke, although slightly more advanced in terms of ruckwork at the same age. I've heard some people suggest he could play as a forward, but I wouldn't expect anything more than him resting up forward. He would have been a first round pick a few years ago, not so sure how teams will rate him now though.

Player comparison:
Profile: The best ruckman in what is a shallow draft for ruckmen. Cameron is one of the better ruckmen this year because he is not only an effective tap ruckman but because he can present as a target up forward and influence games in the front half with his clean hands overhead and ability to take marks as well as convert from those opportunities. Cameron has some size on his frame already which is encouraging and he covers the ground reasonably well for a young tall.

Nah you're alright buddy, I'm just teasing. I've been keen on Cameron for a while now, clubs are unwilling to develop young ruck and I think it is a mistake. Cameron may not be a Grundy, but he's got some talent and I disagree that rucks are a massive gamble.

Sorry mate didnt see you mention anything about Darcy anywhere, Anyway last year i was beating Liam McBean drums and in 2013 i have gone for the Darcy Cameron to Tigerland push.

Writings on the wall TG he's a WA Tiger already, just a step away.......;)

Get your own damn bandwagon! The Cameron train is for me and tigs only. :p

The Gun can join on. The more the merrier. Darcy Cameron to continue being a Tiger in 2014. :D

Does anyone reckon that Blake Arces could slide down the draft to pick 26 because of his shoulder concerns or is that just wishful thinking?
