With the developing team we have now led by choco, i have a belief that we could turn any kid we draft that has potential succeed this is why i believe we should rookie list Angus Milham the 210cm giant from the Oakleigh chargers. Yes needs to improve quite a bit and needs to fill out into his 210cm frame but with the right development could become something special.

Looking at draft threads Scharenberg and Aish are put down as sliders. It'll be an interesting draft. Not at all clear who will be available at 12. But a good player will be there. So FJ has to cast his net wide, and might land another Vlos quality pick if we're lucky.

Narrowed down my picks to the following players:

Pick 12
Trent Dumont 186cm/83kg Defender/Midfielder
Spending the weekend reading through Phantom after Phantom and this kids name just kept jumping out at me as someone who would be an FJ special. I may be incorrect but to me he comes across as another Ellis Conca Vlastuin type of player, composed, loves a contest, versatile and uses the ball well. Like those 3 Dumont also has a body that is AFL ready should be be called upon from round 1, although given our depth he may find himself with a delayed debut, but still he'd be a worthy selection for mine.

Pick 50
Nick Holman 187cm/79kg Midfielder
Been a fan of this kid for a while and if he is there at 50 I'd be very happy for FJ to call out his name. Like Dumont above Holman is another inside midfielder who is a star at the stoppages with his clean hands, strong tackling and clearance work. Everything I've read about this kid screams out a kid that Hardwick would love to have. As mentioned is a strong tackler, another positive is that he doesn't take a backward step when the ball is there to be won.

Pick 68
Ben Sokol 185cm/86kg Forward/Midfielder
Unlike the other 2 this kid is more of an outside type. Playing across the HF line this kid gives us another lead up option who should eventually push into the midfield. His write up on the AFL site suggests he is the number 1 endurance player for WA this year. In 23 games this year he averaged 18 disposals 6 marks and just under 2 goals a game.

Pick 86
Ricky Petterd - Rookie Upgrade
As much as some don't like the idea of Petterd being promoted to the senior list I am actually happy to have him get a spot. When I did my depth chart a few weeks back one area where I believed that we were lacking was in the medium defenders. With Newman nearing the end and guys like Batchelor & Dea struggling to have any real impact, Petterd gives us an instant replacement.

Rookie Pick 1
Errin Wasley-Black 187cm/83kg Defender
Wasley-Black has good skills goes hard at it and some decent pace. Bring him down to Melbourne and get him working with our development staff and we could find ourselves with handy pick up. Probably a long shot to make the rookie draft but being a division 2 kid from a poor NT side he may well be one who gets overlooked in the main draft.

Rookie Pick 2
Matthew Sully 196cm/95kg KPD
Like Petterd, Sully is drafted as he addresses a list need and that is a genuine big KPD who can be developed to replace Chaplin down the track. Sully played at Geelong last year and was good enough to get himself selected in the VFL team of the year in the back pocket.

Rookie Pick 3
Scott Jones 203cm/101kg Ruckman
Like Sully before him, Jones is picked up as another player who addresses a list need. With Maric Hampson & Stephenson as our dedicated ruckman it's important that we pick up one who can be developed over the next couple of years. For me Jones is that player. Represented WA in the U18 champs in 2012 and then had an injury interrupted year this year due to breaking his tibia in round 1. As such I reckon that he might be a slider into the rookie draft and if he is there in the 3rd round I'd be happy for us to swoop.

So these are my 7 wishlist draftees for this year. Odd are we probably won't get any of them, but hey there is no harm in dreaming.

If we wanted Dumont we could've downgraded pick 12 for St.Kildas pick and gotten him and someone like Dunstan. I would love Matthew Sully to be there but if he's not taken in the National Draft he'll definitely be taken by our second rookie pick.

Problem is Saints wanted 3 picks inside 20, so it's unlikely that they would have given up 2 top 20 picks to get just one back in return.

While Dumont might not have been on our radars FJ would have been watching the kids for a few years now, so who is to say that FJ hasn't got the kid near the top of his list. After all I don't recall many of us having Conca or even Ellis on our lists prior to them being picked up. Dumont would fit that sort of recruiting policy again.

Whoever takes him, will make every other club lok quite silly in the long run.

Daniel Connors silly? Or Stevie J silly?

You seem to have the average armchair recruiter's opinion on Garlett.
Do you have the same opinion of Carl Peterson? He had a nice little highlight reel from his time with the Hawks. Apparently fit and firing and training with the Saints.

From the few 'highlight reels' posters see on the internet, do they also know what sort of character Garlett brings to the club? Or do they just read the so called 'puff pieces'?

Not sure the amount of work involved in bringing this guy into the fold and keeping him focused.
I'm sure all clubs have done their homework, like they did last year.

Stephen Wells has told the story a few times

That's not exactly true.
When Geelong called out his name, the Richmond table that were near them were visibly happy as it meant that they would get one of their two choices (Rance/Selwood) in the next 2 picks. They thought both of these players had better scope for improvement seeing Harry was a mature ager (playing state league with exposed form visible to all recruiters). He was a solid top 20 pick. Some optimistically thought he may have gone top ten. Inside Football that year also placed him in the Top 10.

Wells has probably exaggerated the story a little because of what he saw at the Tiger table.
Plus it makes a better story, and enhances his reputation as a master recruiter.

Quite possibly. Just heard Wells tell that story in a semi-public forum where he would know that it would be repeated. Mate is a big Cats supporter and Wells told him the same thing.
I think FJ was the recruiter and I highly doubt he'd never have heard of him.
Jon Anderson is a goose, too

The story about Buddy wasn't right either. They took Roughead because they didn't want to get the 2nd best small (Tambling) and the 2nd best tall (Franklin) and let us get the best of each. (Deledio/Roughead) They thought we'd take Franklin and they'd get Tambling which was a better result for them. And the rest as they say is history. campaigners

And it proves that tambling, at the time, was the right pick.

Its a bit of the 2nd division curse. Just how strong is the competition. I guess that's why its nice for the recruiters now to see them div 2 sides play div 1 sides. Unless they change it next year to div 1 sides play each other twice and don't play div 2.

my mind keeps changing between acres and lennon at 12 I am now thinking lennon is the one he has more tricks, a bit of X -factor about him ,which I think we need !! But at 50 Nick Holman is the one I really want love this kid strong hard at it good left foot kick if we can land these 2 would be ecstatic !!

Who do you think will be available at our pick?
Plenty of options Lennon, dumont, taylor, possibly acres and a few others like bontempelli/salem are potential sliders; Salem as much. Anyone like the look of luke dunstan, developed body, great contested player and disposer from the vids I've seen.
