To be fair, neither Eli or DBJ are small forwards, and Richmond are clearly trying to add attacking threats to the side. As much as Lennon is a talent, he's not really a small forward. Usually I don't completely understand the logic of the draft, but Richmond took the best available in Lennon and tried to find the best speedy short people late on. I'm not saying I completely agree with it, but for the first time, I can understand the logic. Maybe this is because Richmond's needs are narrowing to the extent that Richmond is allowed to pick and choose?

So our stocks now are:
Half Forwards - Knights, Lennon, McDonough, O'Hanlon, Gordon(?)
Small Forwards - S.Edwards, Push Up, Lloyd
Lennon would be odds on to get games if/when Knights inevitably gets injured.

Gordon isn't exactly small 188cm is a good size. Listening to FJ i think we see him as a mid and Lennon as a versatile type player. I think we will start him at HBF.
I'm not completely sold on Lloyd, he just doesn't seem to have that pure speed we lack up forward and really think we could have rookied him.

I Really hope that we are looking at Dwayne Wilson. _ he is the Exact type of player that wee need to compliment our Foward line and can play midfield with good pace

Thing is, to me it's a much of a muchness whether you take Lloyd at the ND or the RD, I mean there was, what, 3 players drafted after Lloyd? So hardly any players were taken. Richmond still has three rookie picks so I reckon they can get someone good. I still think Wilson will be available if Richmond want him.

Lennon finally a Tiger, looks to have that natural forward smarts at a difficult height to match up on, with the versatility to eventually rotate through mid. Combine results remain a concern, even though natural players don't have to be athletes to make an impact. Wonder if there is an explanation for those poor results that will emerge now that we have our man?
Gordon also looks dynamic and capable of pushing for selection as a mid/forward, so is another boost to our versatility stocks.
Lloyd I know nothing of, but going by highlights seems to be a nuggetty competitive small forward that can take a grab and impact on the scoreboard - maybe a Jake King back-up if able to exert forward defensive pressure?
Big surprise is no true hard-at-it midfielders this time around, though once we got Lennon there might not have been much left for out later picks. maybe its the time of the cream-at-the-top forwards after buiding our engine room in the recent past.

on the draft overall, there were a few surprises tonight for me

Leslie at 20. Thought they'd go for the other Kolodjashnij
Aliir Aliir getting drafted was probably the biggest surprise for me. To Sydney nonetheless. He's miiiiiiiles off being a consistent AFL player.

Yeah but my point is take Byrne-Jones at 50 who had a strong champs at HB and is an athletic freak and push Gordon to 66 and Lloyd to RD.
Its just worries me we are topping up so much for a shot at top 4 next year. I don't think we've had great success with mature players either outside of Morris. Petterd has been okay, Nason=gone, Webberly=gone, Lonergan=gone, Oren=gone.

Yeah Lions was interesting. Think they would have been better of with Giles then Gardiner but i think they did well and could have drafted a future backline with McStay, Gardiner and Cutler. Probably Aish starts back there too.
I don't reckon we have topped up at all. Top up player imo have limited scope and all I saw was some pretty good players. Now who knows how they will go but I wouldn't worry too much about this.

I also think that Richmond know this draft is shallow, that and they realise that drafting young smallish forwards is a risky enterprise. I suspect DBJ was never going to be picked up by Richmond, I'm guessing FJ sees him as mainly a half back and feels like Richmond has enough of these. At the end of the day if Richmond gets someone like Wilson or Templeton it becomes them versus DBJ.

Don't have an issue with any of the drafts picks tbh. All seem to have talent and Lloyd looks as though he can still get fitter so plenty to work with.
I am actually a bit happy we got a bit more depth in the medium/small forwards tbh because it was getting thin for a while and King is not getting any younger.

I consider them trades. Not a mature age pick up.
Adding two 23-24 year olds who i don't know who's position they really take and not sure they will play a lot of games as a strong strategy. I honestly wonder how much they were chosen to fill out the the VFL side compared to the AFL side.

You can't really put players that have been in the AFL for years in the same basket as mature age VFL recruits.
The only mature recruits we've had in recent years have been Webberley, Morris, Nason and King. 2 of them were pretty successful with the other two being duds.

Also, whilst Brisbane had a good draft, I still think that they overstocked on KPD With Gardiner, McStay and Cutler.
Lewis Taylor at 28, Trent Dumont at 30 and Marsh at 77 could be the steals of the draft, at the moment.

Do you think we should give up on mature-agers or try learn from our mistakes and pick better ones?
Morris was obviously a good pick.
Nason and Webberley were both taken when we first got our 2 extra recruiters. Yeah they were bad picks but people improve at their jobs and learn from mistakes.
Lonergan and Orren weren't FJ & co's choices. Orren has served his purpose anyway.
Why would we take Byrne-Jones if we don't rate him? Seems kind of pointless. What then do we do with a player we don't rate? The plan wasn't to take 2 x 23yo's. They just happened to be best available's.

I personally don't think we will take Wilson. Not a Richmond type player. Look at the 2 guys we took at 50 & 66. Work Ethic!!!! Work your arse off or we won't pick you. There is no difference to taking Lloyd at 66 or rookie draft except for guaranteeing we get the guy we rate next highest on our list.
