I love Lloyd. Going to be a gun. Gordon is the one I'm not sold on but he should be solid.

Im more the opposite tig's

Gordon actually fills a need as in he is a great mark & Kick similar to Lloyd but has the ability to play in the midfield also and will come into rotations with Martin,Cotchin,Delidio through the foward line.

Also at 188cm & 86kgs with preseasons under his belt (sydney) - He is the exact type that we need
My only concern with these 2 selections are that we could of had Gordon at #66 and Lloys though the Rookie selection but none of the players that i would of wanted apart from perhaps Marsh really were taken after our #50 which indicates that he wasnt rated by the recruiters - Only Holman was taken 1 selection after by Cartoon

Templeton , Cameron , Wilson , Bourke , Sokol all still available

Lloyd I reckon would have been gone. Was a National Combine player so had at least 4-5 clubs after him, maybe more. He will be a player. I asked on another forum would people give up pick 66 for a Jamie Elliot type in a trade? Of course they would.

Hoping for Templeton in the rookie draft.

I dont think we will be looking at Templeton TBH, Just seems that we are trying to build a Bog bodied team with similar types that can rotate through various positions.

Unless the player is of elite qualities seems we will opt for the ready player ( Bourke , Sokol Types ) I hope we do look at these 2 boys along with wilson who just add that speed and skill

Whilst l dont know what l was expecting from 50 and 66... have come away feeling somewhat underwhelmed. Would have loved another midfielder, even if was a speculative selection... still think we need to improve on our colelction of midfielders. I suppose, thats where Thomas will come in. Certainty now to be rookied.

One thing l will say... Hardwick is coaching for the NOW. Not a bad thing, because to be honest, in 2 years time... no one is going to get within a ****ing bulls roar of GWS. Once they pull it together... they will be owning it.

Would love Sokol. Hopefully they see Lennon/Gordon as mids and Sokol as a mid. Because they won't take 4 marking forwards. Most likely Templeton doesn't fit either like Wilson but who knows in the rookie draft.

Favretto could be a good get too. Isaish Miller. Campbell Combe has a big body and along with Tsitas are the types that succeed as rookies.

Lloyd is a better pick than someone like Nason. He may step up, he may not but, with improved fitness, a professional environment , who knows, plenty to work with anyway. Not a wasted pick anyway IMO atm, particularly given our lack of depth in the position. He has a bit of true goal sense as well.

What about Cain... another one that was talked about a fair bit but, unless I've missed him, he was also overlooked. Rookie spot as ready to go midfield depth, and handy addition for our VFL side.

Felt like we were set so set in who we were going to draft before it even started and did not waiver in our thoughts at all, could have snapped one of Lloyd/Gordon in the Rookie Draft and taken a young midfielder at 50 or (Byrne-Jones,Templeton,Battersby). Would of much preferred Chris Cain over Gordon, little underwhelmed yet rapt to get Lennon.

I personally don't think we will take Wilson. Not a Richmond type player. Look at the 2 guys we took at 50 & 66. Work Ethic!!!! Work your arse off or we won't pick you. There is no difference to taking Lloyd at 66 or rookie draft except for guaranteeing we get the guy we rate next highest on our list.

Has there been mail on Wilson that suggests he lacks 'work ethic'? You may be right about the type of player Richmond prefers, but a perceived lack of work ethic at the age of 17-18 wouldn't be a total put-off for clubs if there are plenty of other attributes to work with, and Wilson has some obvious abilities. Once in the afl club environment, those sorts of guys can come up to speed with the right mentorship and support. Richmond wouldn't have taken Martin if work ethic was a selection criteria.
Certainly late in the draft or in the rookie draft, you are left with guys who have some major deficiencies, but hopefully ones that can be ironed out in a season or two in the professional system.
Who knows, maybe there are some background details that have put the club off, but if Richmond has struck his name off, it would be because they think he is too slight to suit the clubs preference for big bodies IMO.
FWIW, I think he is worth the punt. Your whole team can't be all be big bodied types, and no team is anyway. Sometimes you should back pure talent when you have otherwise laid the foundation of solid players as Richmond has done.

Darcy Hourigan overlooked as well. Couldn't believe my eyes.

Thought he was at least a top 30-40 at worst.

Handy stocky type forward like Stuart Crameri. Similar mould to Tim Membry who I wanted last year. Would add another dimension to our forward line. You throw him into a forward line with Ben Lennon suddenly we look very dangerous up front.

Not really a fan tbh. I have the guys we took better. I still have 28 guys rated higher than him.

Nope. The guys we wanted disappeared. We just took best available as we went down our list. No point taking a young midfielder we didn't rate higher than the guys we took. Seems kind of pointless really.

Just look at some of the players other teams took late in the draft that could have been rookies.
Adelaide - Riley Knight
Essendon - Orazio Fantasia
Fremantle - Alex Pearce, Brady Grey and using a 1st rounder on Apeness
Geelong - Jarrad Jansen and used a 1st on Lang.
Gold Coast - Jack Leslie and Sean Lemmens.
Hawthorn - Garlett (no one else was taking him)
Melbourne - Jayden Hunt
Port - Mitch Harvey, Karl Amon
Sydney - Aliir Aliir
West Coast - Tom Barrass, Dylan Main
Dogs - Mitch Honeychurch

Why did these teams not just wait? Because they took the best player available that they rated. Lloyd and Gordon both had Combine invites so other teams were keen. No guarantee a quick, tall, hard working mid/fwd would be available at 66. (Gordon) No guarantee Lloyd would have lasted through the PSD and 1st 11 picks without knowing who invited them.

Gordon is a better prospect for AFL than Cain. Cain is a good VFL player but I don't think he'll transition as well to AFL. Gordon has some very, very enticing attributes and will be a player. Will be the one that pushes round 1. Having said that I'd rather we take Cain than Thomas who will 100% not make it.

Yeah there has been mail on his work rate and you can see it in the way he plays, he goes missing massively. It's his biggest knock. He's also short and skinny. Agree with you on the fact we take those types, just have to look at the types we take over the years. The only guys that tend to be skinny over last 4 drafts now were KPP like Elton and McBean. All the others are solid types. Also, don't think we've taken a sub-180cm player.

Martin didn't have work ethic issues at TAC level, nor does he have them at AFL level. He was very consistent this year. He doesn't have a big tank but that's more lifestyle than tank. Having our time again I'm not sure we would take Dusty tbh.

The fact we took two mature players shows we really are looking for immediate depth in the midfield/small forward positions.

Wasn't planned, just worked out that way.

Darcy Hourigan overlooked as well. Couldn't believe my eyes.

Flunked Draft Combine. Maybe goes rookie, maybe has to go back and work his arse off (literally) and get a chance next year.

Do you know who we we wanted? Just feel that we could of possibly got one of the two mature age players in the Rookie/PSD, I prefer Cain over Gordon, Cain has shown the ability to play midfield with his added class he could possibly of been a possible Round 1 inclusion whilst I do not really rate Gordon, little rough with his disposal and runs one way in my opinion, happy to be proven wrong.

We overlooked prospects that would have provided better value at Pick 50 rather than Gordon, Lennon and Lloyd I am happy with, yet at 50 we had juniors that we could have taken with significantly higher scope than Gordon.

In FJ we trust I suppose!

That's a pretty provocative statement, despite the off-field concerns which have somewhat been taken down a notch through guidance and monitoring of Dusty, we drafted the most intriguing player on our list, he has the ability to better than Cotchin if he took the appropriate steps. Albeit he may never play at a higher level than Cotchin I would still think the Club would of drafted Dusty, his attributes are ridiculous and he has shown in spurts throughout seasons including a very consistent season this year which saw him finish Runner Up in the BnF. Kids a talent, a great talent, need's to mature further yet he is not as bad as everyone makes him out to be.

That's purely an opinion based on what we know now. I have no idea what he was like as a kid.

For me, Gordon has shown he can play midfield too. He's more versatile though and can do some damage. Has the added advantage of being a great size for AFL at 188cm. Strong overhead, hard worker by all accounts and is capable of doing some scoreboard damage. Has a pretty good defensive game too from what I've been told so will be interested to see if that translates to AFL level.

Chris Cain has never really excited me as a prospect for AFL. He's a very good VFL player but there's just something that doesn't scream AFL player. Looks small and outside and there's no real upside at 27 next year.

we are going to have to make decisions on fwd next year- we have an abundance now. accountability. thats what I like. you dont perform you go. that was our problem a few years ago...

Agree, our forward line has clearly been our weakness for awhile now. There hasn't been any pressure for spots. We have 5 new forwards in the last 2 years. 3 of which can play midfield as well.

Agree to disagree Tigs!
Glad to see you are keen on who we picked, (especially Lloyd) ;)

I actually thought they'd go the opposite way around. I have Lloyd a fair bit above Gordon in my rankings.

Checking through other teams boards, seems like everyone is happy overall with their drafting.
Port almost had a meltdown after their 1st pick but came alright

Essendon were stoked but I still lol'd at Fantasia
Geelong unsure about Lang but confident in Well's ability
Sydney not that happy
Freo dirty on GWS (Giants are making friends fast )

Personally I think that Pies, Saints and Lions are big winners. Time will tell though
