Edit: Seeing as a un-expected family tragedy arose I wasn't able to complete this within the time frame I had set myself to complete this was not met. Due to this most of the stuff I previously wrote isn't really valid, so I've edited lots of stuff to clear up any confusion. If I have missed something please let me know!

So seeing as I have a bit of free time on my hands at the moment I've decided to start writing a team review. Don't expect this to be amazing as I'm no journalist and I do tend to overlook obvious things. It's all a work in progress as well, I'll look to add more to it whenever I've got time.

Also it would be great if you guys could chip in when I make mistakes with anything, I'll be happy to acknowledge you.

--

What a season it has been. We went from being premiership favourites, to just scrapping into the top 4, to just making finals and finally not making finals at all. Without a doubt this year has been a failure, and a costly one at that. We've lost our premiership coach in John Worsfold, three premiership players and it has already been hinted that the current playing list is under scrutiny. Really the only major positive coming out of this year is us getting a decent draft pick.

We finished 13th with a dismal 9 wins and 13 losses totalling 36 points.

Best 22:

B: Mitch Brown Darren Glass Will Schofield
HB: Beau Waters Eric Mackenzie Shannon Hurn
CEN: Andrew Gaff Scott Selwood Sharrod Wellingham
HF: Mark LeCras Jack Darling Jamie Cripps
F: Josh Hill Josh Kennedy Dean Cox
FOLL: Nic Naitanui Chris Masten Luke Shuey
BENCH: Daniel Kerr Mat Rosa Mark Hutchings
SUB: Andrew Embley

What I would change:

Trade: (Some of these may be unlikely)
Mitch Brown - I see him going to Carlton to get Yarran or to St Kilda [Signed a 3 Year deal]
Matt Priddis - Would be good to trade him to an elite clearance midfielder, this would require a bundle deal.

Delist/Retire: (Although some of these players have had good years so far, I don't see them having an impact next year, all of them are open as trade bait, although I highly doubt any of them will be traded.)

Dean Cox - Probably has another year in him, don't see him playing on after next year.
Adam Selwood - Well past his prime [Retired]
Andrew Embley - Although he has played well this year I don't see him continuing on after this year. [Retired]
Mark Nicoski - Too many injuries [Retired]
Brad Dick - [Retired]
Ashton Hams - [Retired]

What’s been good? Seeing as I can’t just write “nothing” I thought I would scrape the barrel a bit and produce some crappy positives from this year. It's not all doom and gloom I suppose, there have been some really big positives from this year. I’ll start off with our rookie/fringe player development. Bradd Dalziell, Jamie Cripps, Adam Carter, Mark Hutchings, Blayne Wilson, Callum Sinclair and Scott Lycett have all benefitted hugely from our injury list and look set to continue to develop and improve as they continue to get game time.

What’s been bad? I was tempted to just write everything and leave it at that. I biggest disappointment this year for me was our senior players. With players like Daniel Kerr, Nic Naitanui, Sharrod Wellingham, Andrew Embley, Scott Selwood, Shannon Hurn, Beau Waters, Mark LeCras, Sam Butler, Matt Rosa, Mark Nicoski, Will Schofield and Luke Shuey getting injuries throughout the year we never really stood a chance.

What we need:

Coach Replacement: John Worsfold has now left the club and left a gaping hole for somebody to fill. Scott Burns is most likely to get the job at the moment.
Options:
Scott Burns:
Paul Roos: [Signed to Melbourne] damn :(
A quick, Clearance Machine Midfielder: (Another midfielder) t we have lacked in this department and its cost us. Priddis is good, but not good enough for us to build the team around him. His kicking is horrible and speed isn't the best, simply put he isn't good enough to build a team around. Obviously there's several ways we could go about this. Option one being attempting to recruit a rookie and option two attempting to trade for a solid player.
Options:
Dustin Martin: An extremely talented football player with the ability to dominate games. Big question marks over his fitness and lifestyle.
Dom Sheed: Dom Sheed is a well developed midfielder. He has a good inside game, he is willing to work hard for his own ball. His outside game is also very good with the ability to run hard to receive the ball. His extremely talented by foot and rarely makes a mistake. Dom would slot in nicely to our current midfield, which could do with an injection of pace like his.
Reece Conca: Reece Conca is a W.A boy who
Darren Glass/Mitch Brown Replacement: With Darren Glass' career coming to an end and Mitch Brown being trade bait our backline lacks dearly. I don't believe our rookies are ready to replace Glass/Brown at this stage so I see us needing another experienced defender. EDIT: Mitch Brown signed.

Free Agent Targets:
Reece Conca:
Lance Franklin -
Dale Thomas -
Adam Cooney -
Colin Sylvia -

Trade Targets: With all our retirements and the possibility of a few players being delisted we have to be cashed up which makes it possible that we might make a splash come October.
Dustin Martin: (C&P from above)
Chris Yarran: Yarran is a West Australian boy, who has reportedly been offered a deal to come home. He super quick and exciting to watch. Doesn't really fix our current problems in the midfield but his injection of pace will benefit us greatly.

Draft Targets: (This depends on whether we keep or trade our pick)
#1 - Bontempelli: Marcus Bontempelli is an tall athletic midfielder with good pace and endurance for his height. He can play through the backline, or push forward if needed. Still plenty of development left in him which makes him an exciting prospect. Marcus is the sort of player we need, a quick ball carrier with good foot-skills.
#2 - Sheed: (C&P from above) Dom Sheed is a well developed midfielder. He has a good inside game, he is willing to work hard for his own ball. His outside game is also very good with the ability to run hard to receive the ball. His extremely talented by foot and rarely makes a mistake. Dom would slot in nicely to our current midfield, which could do with an injection of pace like his.
#3 -Billings: Jack Billings is a standout with his kicking. He has the ability to go to right if needed and kick it comfortably or he can use his left just as well. He can spot someone up inside the forward fifty or go forward himself and use his overhead marking ability to become a presence.

Thats it for the review now onto the preview.

Next years prediction: I think that we have the capacity to be a top 4 side again, if we handle the draft/trade period correctly. Acquiring the right talents will see us easily burst back into the top 4 whereas a poor off-season may see us only just scraping into the top eight. I don't see us missing the finals next year and I definitely don't think we will see a repeat of this (Last) year, if everyones fit.

Don't know where else to post this, but I just want to vent on one of the things that frustrated the shit out of me from 2013 (and earlier).

Why do the Eagles wait for the maximum amount of time before kicking in for a point every time? To make sure all our targets are manned up? To allow the opposition to set their zone/press?

For ****s sake, I hope the new coach has a set of testicles and instructs Hurn/Schofield/whomever to bring the ball in quick and catch the opposition on the hop.

Thanks.

Agreed, Not only kick in quickly but move the ball quicker , which means guys up field need to move quicker for them , the eagles should know how to play Subiaco oval better than anyone , but every team forces us wide down the flanks and the opposition goes straight down the middle yes I agree get a coach that demands quicker movement of the ball and that means kicking the ball not 5 handball out of the centre to gain 15 metres

Partly agree. If it is Hurn kicking in I'm happy for him to take his time. Anyone else should TRY to get it in quickly.

This is how I see us lining up in round 1, assuming Kerr stays. Not a bad team IMO.

Carter _Mackenzie _Glass
_________Hurn
Yeo ____Schofield _Waters
Masten Wellingham _Gaff
________Darling
_____Kennedy Shuey
______LeCras Cox

Naitanui Selwood Kerr

I:Rosa Priddis Hill
S:Sheed
You forgot Martin, Conca, Yarran, Franklin and Thomas.

What can I say, I lack imagination.

I do however like the side. I still think our best 22 next year will be pretty good, if we can get everyone on the park at the same time.
By the way, are we going to be playing a 3-1-3-3-1-2-2? :p

I'm home sick so just wasting time really haha

We do play 7 in defence a fair bit, so thought I'd make a team with Hurn loose.

And also wanted to try to have Darling really high up the ground, Kennedy around the 30-40 and Coxy deep. Shuey resting up forward, with Masten and Wellingham to spend a fair bit of time up there too.

It's a pretty average team but if multiple players can train multiple houses down, you never know what happen next year.

That's the problem our best 22 are ok but when we lose half a dozen thru injury that's when the problem occurs
Our second tier this year struggled whether it be fitness or skill probably a. Bit of both

just a question Kyal Horsley and Greg Broughton have been delisted from Gold Coast, they would be free agents , i did like the way Broughton played just got squeezed out i think , not sure how old he is
Horsley is a good kick but im not sure if hes quick enough , food for thought and you might get em cheap

i know its early days, and jumping the gun here, but i'm actually feeliing quite positive about 2014..we have all the KPP's,and good ones,we have some talent, some stars, the frameworks still in place from the team that played well in 2012..some newbies did well this season-a bit of depth..sure we've had a necessary shake-up,or about to,with new coaches and players..i believe we'll see a reinvigorated team under a new coach, and lets hope they make the right choice,no going backwards,or marking time, move forward post-woosha..strengthen the midfield (big bodies, pace and skills required) and a new gameplan, and we could be the team we were tipped to be in 2013..or at least a big improvement on last season, top 6?..anyway early days yet..but this offseason wont be dull over the next couple of months.

I think 2014 should be a little better due to new coach's across the lines, but we need to get involved in the trade period more than previously. Maybe we should look to trade Gaff (as he is a little soft) back to vic for some real midfield pace i.e. Yarran

I really doubt we will trade Gaff for anyone.

Probably the most relevant thread for this, and it's not thread-worthy, why are our B&F awards not till the end of November? That seems an unnecessarily long wait.

I was looking for a preview thread, this one seemed the most appropriate.

Just a few random thoughts on expectations of individual players for next year:

Brown - think he will be similar to 2013, will play most games, a few in the WAFL, but I have lost hope that he'll ever progress to being one of the better defenders in the league.

LeCras - he was really crap in 2013, and I think he can really improve next year. He'll be fit and dying to have a good year. I think he'll play close to goal given our lack of small forward options, and the potential for Hill to play a bit higher. I can see him kicking a lot of goals and having a great year.

Gaff – struggled with the tag a bit, but he got a lot of experience playing on-ball (rather than wing). With a bit more size, and the return of a few other players I think he’ll bounce back to have a much better year.

Sheppard – very tough to pick. I’ve really lost confidence in him, so I’d just be happy if he performs well in the WAFL, and plays reasonable for the eagles. I can see a breakout season or anything like that.

Masten – I’m backing him to keep up his improvement, and starting rack up big numbers. I think he can average high 20s this year. Will play a bit of high HFF, but I can see him having a couple of dominant games next year, getting 35 touches and kicking a couple of goals.

Waters – if he can stay injury-free, he’ll be a solid member of the defence. a big if. Will he be played forward at all?

Naitanui – there is a lot leaning on his groins – if he is fit he will dominate.

Selwood – we’ll need him to play a defensive role in the midfield I think, and that’s ok.

Priddis – more of the same would be good, and I think he’ll provide it.

Wellingham – he’s not a star, but if he can play some consistent footy he’d bring so much to the team. I’m not really sure what to expect though.

Shuey – I’m worried about his constant injuries. Pretty pessimistic about next year, think his hamstrings a real issue.

Brennan – not sure he is really AFL standard. He’s in a big group of HBFs who need a good year.

Cripps – im pretty positive about Cripps. He’s my choice for the defensive forward role (maybe battling Tunbridge for this role if it exists?), and think he’ll have a good year.

Mackenzie – he’s a monster, will crush the dreams of all he comes across.

Kennedy – see Mackenzie

Carter – think he’ll have a great year, in and out of the team, but he looks the goods, and we need someone who can stop dangerous small forwards.

Cox – if Naitanui stays fit he should kick a lot of goals. He maybe slowed down a bit this year, and at some point he’s bound to drop right off.

Colledge – he’s the great unknown. I’m predicting him to dominate WAFL from round 1, and place huge pressure on the selectors. He will debut, and then probably drift in and out of the team, maybe playing about 5 games.

Glass – I’m expecting more of the same, don’t think his age will be an issue.

Rosa – big year coming up. Playing a run-with role on outside mids, or on the HBF, I think he’s going to be critical to our structures, and our success.

Hurn – not really sure what to expect. I think he’s best as a traditional HBF. If we can’t have him as our loose man, then it will be interesting to see who we get free. Yeo has a good mark, it could be him.

Butler – hopefully plays well for East Perth

Yeo – I think his game is quite limited. He is quick and can take a grab, but he often just follows his opponent around, doesn’t seem to have the best game sense, and not a natural ball hunter. I don’t think he’ll hit the heights many expect him to, but will be solid across the HBF.

Darling – AA squad. Can see him dominating up the ground, and can’t wait to watch it.

Smith – not a fan, don’t think he’ll play much for the eagles.

Lycett – will dominate WAFL, and give selectors a headache about whether to play all three rucks, given that all three are good forwards.

Wilson – a solid wafl season

Schofield – really tough to predict, he had a down year, and didn’t suit playing forward. If he can get on the HBF he can get back to his running best. Really not sure what to expect.

Hill – would be great if someone stood up and took his spot, but he’s still our second best small/medium forward

Hutchings – should play about half our games, and always be decent. could find a role in the team and be really impressive. high hopes.

McGinnity – not expecting much

McInnes – he’s still very young, but would be good to see him kick some bags in the WAFL. there could be a spot at CHF if he was good enough.

Newman – if everything goes well off-field, think he will definitely be in the selection mix, whether as a forward/mid, or as a sub

McGovern – just hope he can get fit, so much promise

Bennell – have hardly seen him, so just hoping he stays fit and plays some good wafl footy

Tunbridge – he brings some tenacity, although I’m not too sure what to expect

Ellis – im being pessimistic, and expecting him to be injured

Sheed – I think he’ll play, and play well. Gaff 2011 well. will be cemented in our best 21 by mid-season, if not earlier. can’t wait to see him play at blacktown in February.

karpany – for some reason I don’t think he’ll be that good. this is based on nothing, just on a feeling.

Barrass – just needs to improve/develop

Main – ill be surprised if he plays any games where he is in the best players in the wafl. again, based on not much.

Maginess – I think he will have the best season of our draftees outside of sheed.

Powell – just needs to improve/develop, even in the 2s
