Given where our list is at we are realistically three years away form being a genuine premiership contender. Therefore I thought it would be interesting to see how our list is developing towards that goal. Therefore below is our projected 2013 team based on our current list. (Age in 2013 in brackets:

B: S McMahon (27) N Grima (28) S Thompson (27)
HB: G Urquart (25) L Hansen (24) M Firrito (29)
C: D Wells (28) J Ziebell (22) L Anthony (25)
HF: Warren (24) R Tarrant (24) S Wright (22)
F: M Campbell (26) D Petrie (C) (30) L Thomas (25)
R: H McIntosh (28) B Cunnington (21) A Swallow (26)
Int: R Bastanic (21) T Goldstein (24) L Greenwood (24) TBD

Bonus: B Harvey (35), B Rawlings (32), L Harding (32) D Pratt (30) - Would be great is any of these four were still playing, although Pratt would only be 30 I believe his lack of pace could be exposed as he gets older.

Too early to tell: B Norris (21), A Kennedy (21), J MacMillan (21), R O'Keefe (22), A Black (21) - Most of them were late draft picks so any contribution would be a bonus. I am wary of Aaron Black, he moves like a ruckman, not a key position player, but he is only 192cm, I hope I am wrong but I believe he slid in the draft for a reason.

Retired: C Jones (32) - Will be well and truly done by 2013

Not good enough:
Leigh Adams (25) - too short,
W Benjamin (23) - can't kick,
C Gartlett (24) - I am betwixt and between on him, he could surprise me
Ed Lower (25) - Not good enough, list clogger
C Meredith (24) - would be shocked if he made it,
A Obst (26) - Is terrible and I am staggered he is on the list, has no position at AFL level
B Ross - (24) - Not good enough, if he is in our midfield in 2013 we will not be a contender
J Smith (27) - He is 24 and has played 7 AFL games, good VFL player defintely not AFL standard, list clogger
A Edwards (29) - too short, too slow, can't kick, has unbelievable hands but he is not good enough at AFL level, list clogger. He is already 26.
- The theme here is too many players who are good VFL players, who are not good enough to be solid AFL players.

Trade: D Hale (29) - Is unfairly maligned by Roos supporters, was a victim of playing in a team that moved the ball slowly and indirectly. But I will concede he was very disappointing last year. Get the ball in long and direct and he won't be outmarked. The modern rules are tailor made for a player of his height. He is also an excellent kick for goal. You don't kick 8 goals against the Geelong defense at its peak at Shell Stadium if you don't have ability. However he is surplus needs, so hopefully he has a cracking 2010 and we can trade him to GC for Gold Coast. Should be kicking 60 goals a year.

Needs: Midfielders, in order to be a contender you need midfield depth and 2-3 All Australian midfielders. We need to bolster our midfield in the coming drafts and/or trade periods.

Weakness: Backline, Thompson and Grima are working class, but will be effective if we have a dominant midfield.

Potential Stars: The contenders generally have 3-5 All Australians, from the team above the following players have AA potential, Urquart (will have an exceptional 2010), J Ziebell, B Cunnington, D Wells, R Tarrant, D Petrie, H McIntosh, maybe B Warren

Jury's Out: L Hansen, we will know more at the need of 2010, it is critical he can hold down CHB, showed flashes early but has been disappointing since, he is now 21, so still has time on his side, but he has to play 22 solid games next year.

Coach: So much to like about B Scott, by 2013 he should be hitting his strides

In summary, I think we are well on our way to building a premiership side. Our drafting since 2006 has been good. The key now is to develop our recent early draft picks into elite players as is adding talent and depth to the midfield in the ensuing drafts. Our key position stocks are strong, particularly if Hansen can hold down CHB.

Skim read it, saw this and I say that's bullshit.

Hansen has got a long time to prove himself.

He's not disappointing anyone except fools who expect a key position player to suddenly take the game by the cuff of the neck and dominate. He's coming along nicely.

Very thorough - enjoyed reading it.

Read through it quickly and if you've done every player then it highlights that the 22 you have down really have to make it - and possibly some of those you've been critical of need to surprise. What we have now will pretty much be what we have for a while.

Agree with you on most things except the description of the defence - they're better than that.

Not good enough:
Leigh Adams (25) - too short,

There are so many things wrong with that post but can you elaborate a bit more on what I have quoted?

Aaron Black is extremely mobile for his size and that would be one of his greatest strengths.

I don't think height has been a problem so far for Adams at all. He has been held back by injuries but showed fantastic signs this year.

Adams is too small to be a midfielder, Campbell is a FP. To match Geelong our fourth and fifth best midfielders need to be of the calibre of Kelly and Enright. Adams is not in that class.

Watch Aaron Black's Youtube highlights and he had one of the worst results for agility at the draft camp. His turning circle resembles the Horse. He moves well for a ruckman but he is too short. My opinion is not definitive but I don't have high hopes.

If you swapped Varcoe And Stokes with Thomas and Campbell, they would do the same job for Geelong. If we have an elite midfield and two quality talls, a quality mid sized forward, Campbell and Thomas will be above average forward pockets.

Correct, that is a very poor and inaccurate opinion. Mind boggling in fact.

Mate, we dont need to replicate Geelong exactly to win a flag. Geelong have had a huge amount of success in recent years with there game plan and list, but things are going to change dramatically by 2013. We just need to keep to the plan that Brad Scott has in store, which will most likely be different to Geelongs, and different players will be needed to fulfill this plan. So dont underestimate anyone on this list cause all of them could execute a role which could be used to help the team win.

I am genuinely excited by a game plan.
We have to give the new team time and space to deliver.

Didn't Stokes go a long way to costing them a flag and when he was dropped they played better? Stokes > Thomas. But yeah Flash has potential ;0

No, Bomber Thompson did by not making Luke Hodge accountable and lets not forget the woeful kicking for goal and the amount of passengers they had that day.

I am pretty sure the other team had a small aboriginal player and they won the game.

So there is absolutely nothing that proves that Thomas and Campbell can't play in a North Melbourne premiership team.

Didn't you think Power, Watt were champs and Laidley was taking us to a flag?

I don't care about champs, but Power and Watt were genuine in the way they played their footy and never took a backward step. You can criticise their talent but never their endeavour.

Use the search function and see for yourself.

Why do you have a problem with our aboriginal players?

Have a look at the 50 reasons given in the past. You really dont pay much attention do you. Thomas has a long way to go and when in the same arc as Campbell is not going to work in pressure situations.
Am a big wrap for Wells, its when u get persecuted relatives of ex coaches holding the club back through sheer persecution and ignorance some honesty is required at times.

Tell me why North won a flag with Allison and Mooney doing stuff all?

Why did Adelaide still win a flag with at least 6 players getting 6 disposals or less?

Please tell me a realistic reason why the NMFC can not win a flag with Campbell and Thomas in the side and considering this is a thread about 2013 both Lindsay and Matt could have played another 88 games leading up to the 2013 GF which would make them bordering on life membership of the club and senior players.

Again, they are 2 players that can go missing at the same time. Players 10x as talented as Thomas go missing when it counts. Dont think Both together up forward will ever be more than a crowd titillation and a media buzz of a failed memory lane. Big games is asking for trouble. Would a quicker version of Hamish be ideal 2nd ruck? No we need diversity and accurate kicking for goal.

*sigh*

Give it up, DR.

Apart from the fact that these spats are intensely boring and TT's already told you two to leave it, you really need to get your head around the fact that if Lindsay Thomas didn't exist, there would be no global warming.

I also blame him for war, Third World poverty, and paper cuts.

And players 10x less talented than Carey can shine on GF day. Shane Ellen plays a total of 10 games in 1997, kicks 5 goals in a GF. Glenn Freeborn kicks 3 in ten minutes on 1996.

And they would still go missing in big games with 130 games experience? And what big games have they gone missing in so far? One final where both had not even had 2 full seasons worth of game time and Thomas was 20 and Matt 21.

Have you seen Drew play well in a final?

If by 2013 we have the best side in the comp and Thomas and Campbell are in that side there is every chance that we will still be holding up the cup on GF day.

Is there anything concrete that says that the above can not happen?

Unfornately we don't have Mike Wundke to thwart LT in his quest for world domination.
