Alex Brown playing down back? Could the Alex Johnson comparison we heard earlier in the week be a fateful one?

I would then question why Rampe is in the side ahead of him and I've been impressed by Rampe. But from what I've seen of Brown has been good. From what grimlock has said,he has been played all over the ground, not just in defense

He hasn't been used as a KPD much - the last two weeks and the NEAFL GF (when restrictions ruled out regular KPD Lynch). While he was good today made some good spoils not sure id give him BOG. I generally like his distribution especially his kicking simple but direct. But if you asked me to choose a player from the reserves I'd have him ahead of Towers, Lockyer and Biggs

Arrived at the end of the first quarter.

Mitchell: Seemed to take a while to work his way into it, but his presence in the middle increased in the second half. I get the feeling we'll be a better side when he's worked up the fitness to play seniors. He just stands out as a senior player.
Lamb: Just keeps putting together really good games. Looks like a pig in shit when he's collecting ball through the midfield and sending it forward. Got plenty of it, has a great sidestep, uses it well by hand and foot. Just a really good midfielder.
Everitt: Only saw him for a quarter as he came off in the second half as senior emergency, but did pretty much what we expect of him, getting out into space on the wings, sending long kicks forward, etc.
Bird: Just far, far too good for this level. Collected the ball at will, and seemed like he had all the time in the world. Should get a call-up back into the seniors next week.
Walsh: Looks a lot more comfortable up forward than he did last year, and even earlier this year. Seems like he's reading the play better and getting into some space, rather than purely relying on his strength. 5 goals was just reward. Did some relief work in the ruck as well, but without much effect.
White: Not as completely dominant in the ruck as he was last week, but still pretty good. He does move very well for a guy his size. Remains handy back-up if either Mummy or Pyke go down.
Towers: Nowhere near as good as last week. Seemed to get a fair bit of the ball, but execution let him down. Just seemed like he was having a frustrating day.
Lockyer: He just doesn't impose himself. He's had his injury struggles and all, but for a player of his size, he needs to impact contests more than he does. He's not looking that promising at this point, to be honest.
Robinson: I like Robinson. He moves nicely, executes well, strong, committed. As I said last week, he's a good allround package, but I'm not sure he has enough scope for improvement to go up to the next level. That said, I could be wrong.
Jack: As I've said before, he has something about him that just makes you think he'll be good. Only had the 1 goal, but had a number of chances which didn't go through. Tackles hard, and just moves so well! I like him, and I wanna keep him.
Brown: Extremely solid playing in defence. Moves well with ball in hand and is a good distributor, and has the height and strength to play KPD, at least at this level. Whether he could do it at AFL level is yet to be seen. In any case, he was very good, though his selection as BOG is more than a little strange. Would have had Bird, Walsh, Lamb, and Lloyd ahead of him. Oh well, he was still very good.
Richards: Didn't notice that much of him, which for a defender is probably a good thing. Streamed forward and was denied a brilliant running goal when the final siren blew half a second before he kicked. His pleading with the umpire over what was a completely inconsequential goal was funny to watch. It showed off his great athleticism as well. Anyway, I think he has real potential, if we stick with him for a while.
Lloyd: Keeps performing well in the midfield. Runs hard to make position on the outside, gets in and under to win ball on the inside, and uses it well. Was one of our best, as he has been consistently since he was drafted.

Biggs: Did his usual thing coming out of defence, was very solid but unspectacular.

Toppies: Well, Hadden got given a place in the bests, which I find exceedingly odd as he just wasn't that noticeable. Maybe he did a really, really good defensive job or something. I don't know. Head was my pick of the toppies. Playing primarily as a forward, but giving some ruckwork for relief, he was quick, athletic, took marks, converted his opportunities, and did some really clever things here and there that led to goals or opportunities for other players. Just looks a natural out there. I like him, and if he keeps playing like this I'd want our staff to think very hard about drafting him. Not far behind Head, though playing in a completely different position, was Perris. Still scrawny, but found plenty of ball, and I actually tentatively had him down for 2 goals. Almost certain he had at least 1. Ran hard, went when it was his turn, read the play well, and used it well by hand and foot. Looked like a senior player out there. The others were more anonymous, though Behagg did a few nice things, as did Green, while the more experienced toppies in Wray and Crawford did their usual thing coming off HB. Weir was handy in defence as well, playing as a KPD.

No comment on Biggs ?

Agree with Hadden, very puzzling for me too as he was the toppie I didn't actually note anything about compared to all the other ones. Oh well.

Those on Dick watch, I can alleviate your fears by telling you he was sighted walking into the SCG in a Swans jacket just before the reserves game started, didn't seem to be injured and was grinning like a Cheshire cat.

Nope but there was one in the second quarter I couldn't see. Only other toppie I had goal was Wray

Sportingpulse
Walsh 5, Head 4, Everitt 3, White 2, Robinson 2, Lloyd 2, Jack, Lamb, Lockyer, Towers

Swans site (total 21 goals)
Walsh 5, Head 4, Everitt 2, Lloyd 2, Robinson 2, White 2, Jack, Lamb, Towers, Wray

Me
Walsh 5, Head 4, Everitt 2, Robinson 2, White 2, Jack, Lamb, Lloyd, Lockyer, Towers, Wray, Unknown

I reckon Swans site missed Lockyer's goal (100% sure of this) and Sportingpulse gave Wray's goal to Everitt (100% sure Wray kicked it)

Jack: As I've said before, he has something about him that just makes you think he'll be good. Only had the 1 goal, but had a number of chances which didn't go through. Tackles hard, and just moves so well! I like him, and I wanna keep him.
Although I haven't seen much of him, there's something about Jack that makes me believe he's got a bright future. He's obviously still very raw, but has an x factor about him that could add a lot to our side in future. Will spend 2013 developing in the 2nds, but I'd love to see him in the seniors at some point in 2014.

Kieren's development was 0 games in 2006, 2 games in 2007, then a full season in 2008. If Brandon can do something similar it would be a fantastic result.

That was quite a meteoric rise for Kieran, considering he was a rookie listed player. But while it's not my expectation with Brandon, it could eventuate in that way. With the host of players around the 30 mark, 2014/15 should result in a lot of opportunity for our younger guys to come through

  • Tom MITCHELL - Started and played out the full game for the first time this year. As in the previous 2 outings, started at half-forward before being rotated through the midfield. This was the quietest of his 3 games, he had no scoreboard impact, but suspect he was heavily tagged.
  • Jed LAMB - Not as dominant as last week but showed off his class with pinpoint assists to Walsh and then White. Like his ability to clear the ball from congestion with his determined bursts from packs.
  • Andrejs EVERITT - First half only. Started in the midfield as he usually does in the reserves but also spent major minutes as a roaming forward. Kicked an incredibly quick goal straight from the second quarter bounce.
  • Craig BIRD - Played exclusively as an inside midfielder, and combined well with White on many occasions at ruck contests to effect numerous clearances. He's obviously too good for this level and the main goal of getting a full game under his belt was well and truly achieved.
  • Tommy WALSH - Struggled in the first quarter against the weight of multiple opponents who were keen to prevent him getting front position. Improved in the next 2 quarters where he kicked all 5 goals, worked hard to create space for himself on the move and not get bogged down in wrestling contests against 2 or 3 Eagles. Took the forward 50 boundary throw ins and also relieved Jesse in the ruck on rare occasions.
  • Jesse WHITE - Not as dominant as last week's outing against Tuggeranong but still racked up plenty of hitouts. Improved forward play this week, grabbing two tough marks inside 50 and converting them successfully.
  • Dean TOWERS - Started the game on the wing and continued his solid form from last week, getting very involved. The highlight was a great pickup at speed of a misplaced Jordan Weir kick across half-forward before steadying and kicking an exciting running goal. However, he faded as the match went on and he was also trialed as a medium forward as well as in some centre square setups without much success.
  • Jordan LOCKYER - Again used on a wing, had more of the ball then last week but still relatively quiet given his role. Okay user of the ball when under no pressure but can be a bit slow to get rid of it when under the pump. He had two set shots on goal in the 4th quarter weren't very convincing off the boot but luckily one of them sneaked in.
  • Daniel ROBINSON - The Swans preferred to use him instead of Lloyd as an inside, clearance player despite the inclusions of Bird and Everitt this week. Very measured player, doesn't panic and takes his chances in front of goal with aplomb. His second goal summed up his equanimity perfectly - he was tucked up tight against the sideline, where the left boundary intersects the 50m arc, had a quick glimpse inwards to look for open teammates. When he saw none free, he sized up the angle, took a few steps and hooked it home no problems.
  • Brandon JACK - Pushed up the ground and won his fair share of hard ball gets. Very competitive and runs just as hard defensively as he does when has the ball. Kicked only one but could have had four as his 3 behinds were all from achievable situations.
  • Alex BROWN - This was his first full game as a KPD that I've witnessed (I couldn't count last week's thrashing) and he acquitted himself well. Punched from behind successfully, but also not afraid to run off his man to get to a contest. Most of the time that was a decision he made correctly. The only fault on his behalf was when he ran to intercept a falling ball that bounced awkwardly in front of, and then away from him allowing ex-Swan Eugene Kruger to run into an open goal. Also ran full-paced into Buchanan in one defensive 50 contest, Monty slammed him to the ground with some force but to Brown's credit he got up straight away despite being visibly affected (winded) by it. As I've mentioned before, I'm a big fan of his kicking and ball use and he set up a few goals today from the back half.
  • Xavier RICHARDS - Quiet, the only notes I had about him were his milliseconds-after-the-siren goal that was not counted (so technically not noteworthy), and the similarities in his voice and manner to Ted when barking out instructions in the backline.
  • Jake LLOYD - His performances in an outside running role have just been as impressive as his inside ones during the pre-season. He is a lovely, long kick of the football, an effective tackler with good awareness and if an opportunity opened up in the seniors I wouldn't hesistate to promote him off the rookie list.
  • Shane BIGGS - Doesn't do anything spectacular that makes you sit up and take notice but I guess his calm demeanour is something you would prefer to have in defence than one with a kamikaze approach. Took most of the kick-ins now that regular taker Cunningham is out of the side.

Topups - Left-footed key position forward Thomas Head was easily the standout, he's played in the other Sydney-based NEAFL matches before but had to stand aside as a secondary option with the presence of Membrey and Morton as his forward colleagues. I think he benefited slightly from the attention the Eagles directed towards Walsh but that's not to take anything away from his game, which included direct 3 goal assists to go along with his 4 majors. The highlight of his game wasn't from any of those 4 goals but an athletic and smart leap and punch of a bouncing ball that was heading over the sidelines allowing another topup Harrison Green to feed Walsh for a snapped goal.

Stephen Wray was involved early across the wing and half-forward, kicking the first goal of the game, a long shot right on the 50m arc and then hitting up Head on the lead for the second. Jordan Weir did well as the third tall defender alongside Brown and Richards, marking a few opponents which also included the in-form Trent Stubbs. Erol Sertbas was on the bench for most of the first half, but had more game time once Everitt was subbed off, resuming his role as a defensive half-forward who used his pace to harangue and pressure the opposition's defenders

Mitch Crawford and James Behagg were situated mostly a kick behind play and while not as physically developed as Head or Wray, were still skilful enough to contribute to the side. Lloyd Perris may still be small in stature but he wasn't afraid in going after the ball and didn't look out of place.

The Eagles proved to be an organised outfit, their defensive side of their game was of a high enough standard to be a competitive value to our midfield and forwards. Buchanan, despite carrying a few more kilos than at his mid 2000s peak, still has the nous and fighting qualities that made him an effective inside player. However I didn't spot him much towards the tail end of the game and I wonder if he went off the ground. Jamie Vlatko, like he did in the preseason practice game, proved a tough matchup. He reads the fall of the ball exceptionally well and often beat his man in one-on-one contests. He was particularly hot in the first quarter where he booted his 2 goals and set up another.

Reserves have the bye next week to coincide with the NZ trip and will resume their season when we host the Brisbane Lions Reserves on Sunday 5th May 9.30 am (booooo) at the SCG.
