credit to aussierulesrules for being into bruce since day dot and not letting up

how has he gone on the talls this year? any noticeable games?
*cough June 1st cough*
If anyone is bored like me and watching the GWS v Carlscum game (on Foxtel), keep an eye on Josh Bruce (#47). He's playing at CHB/FB on Lachie Henderson and Waite and doing alright, especially considering the volume of footy coming in to the Scum's forward line; very smooth mover for a big kid and a lovely, long left-foot kick. Only 20, listed at 197cm and 93kgs - although after another couple of summers that will go up - he's a great size and they're going to have to give up some players at the end of the year.

Might be worth a shot, especially if my boy Sully falls afoul of the 'no dickheads' policy - and as HBP said above - even if we get Brown we need another KPD. Do yourselves a favour and have a butchers at him.

And how do we know either of those can do the job at AFL Level? Delaney has proved he is reasonable and could do the job as has Bruce.
Look, if we can get both, that would obviously be ideal because they have some experience at AFL level, like you said. I'd be stoked if that happened because it really sets us up for the future.

All i'm saying is, do they want to move just to be back up again? Why not stay at their original club or move to another? We're not the only ones chasing.
A state level KPD might not get the job done as well but they'd be happy to be on the list and grab any opportunity that presented itself, even if it's only a handful of games.

HB: Dempster, Bruce, Gwilt

Sam Gilbert to play a wing/back role and Geary to spend more time in the Guts possibly tagging (If CJ is moved on).
My only concern with Delaney - who I'll admit I've seen barely any of - is that he's listed at "only" 194cm. Granted he's 97kgs, but that's the same height as Robbo. Is it tall enough these days?

Most of the photos I've seen of him seem to have him contesting with small to mid-sized blokes too...

Bruce is only 2-3 cm taller.

I've noticed him play on a few of the big guys like Tom Hawkins, Travis Cloke etc does a reasonable job when he is on them.

Yeah but I believe he 'plays taller' than Roberton. Plus Robbo is a stick. Delaney is a beast isn't he?

Says here that he's 97kgs. Fair lump of a man: http://www.nmfc.com.au/player-profile/luke-delaney

So if Bruce get's injured we are exactly back to where we have been in 2012 and 2013, it's clear we need 2-3 KPD's.

well said mate

one thing to remember though, is you dont have to build the list in one draft/trade period. we have atleast another 3 seasons before we are playing finals, so why not patiently build it.

i think we should get 2 this period, if the right options are there. then top up each year after, if needed

My only concern with Delaney is that he is a spud. We shouldn't be choking off list spots for 24 year olds with little upside. Should we be expecting that he'll play in our next flag? If so, how come he's clearly not even close to North's same plans?

Bruce at least has upside and I'm happy with that one.

I hate other teams!
I know next year might not be much of an improvement on this year just gone but I'm getting quite excited about the way our list is potentially shaping up for the next 5 years.... For example:

From 2012 - Wright, White, Murdoch & Saunders
From 2011 - Ross, Markworth, Newnes, Webster, Minchington, Bruce
From 2010 - Hickey, Siposs, Curren, Michie

Year indicates what draft they were in; players in Bold are those we will potentially pick up this trade period; players in Red are touted as potential guns who are listed & haven't played a game yet

Then this year, throw in pick #3 ______ & pick #20ish ______

That's 16 blokes in the 18-22 age bracket that hopefully will continue to develop.... I like this a lot!

Jagging a key forward & another gun mid next year will be the cherries on top ;)

I always enjoy blokes who (I assume) have never played league footy calling someone who has a "spud"...

Realistically there will be players that are traded for or drafted to fill a particular need that won't work out & someone else will fill their spot.

Case in point... Goose & Penny were earmarked as our defensive bookends & fate would have it that both were done by the time we made it to the big show. When we eventually made the GF our key defenders were Zac & Sam Fisher.

IMO a bloke like Luke Delaney would be recruited purely as a stop gap to protect any developing talls & to help minimise the damage big key forwards caused us this year. He's no world beater but will give an honest contest. He may play 50 games & eventually be replaced by a more talented younger draftee or he may play 100 games & be our rock.

Bruce has the physical tools & youth to be developed as a possible long term KPD & if we do acquire him, will get the opportunity to do that.

Who knows, we might be able to draft Hugh Goddard (HJ? hehe) next year & he could turn into our dominant CHB for the next generation. Michael Hurley could walk or be traded, James Frawley could become a free agent and Jackson Trengrove might want to come home...

At this point in time acquiring Bruce & Delaney would be very prudent moves for a club that is rebuilding.

Good early signs that Pelchen's velvet whisper is being heard!

It's really taking shape nicely isnt it!

It's nice to have early picks in a renowned midfielders draft (2013) & very likely to have early picks again in a draft reportedly stacked with key position players (2014).

As many of us agree, I feel as though we have the skeleton of a very very good side. The good- very good support players are in place... we just need to add the match winners. It's imperative that the next 2-3 drafts achieve this.

Then it will be "get on board & hold on for your life"!

Yeah Kade Kolodjashnij is a nice prospect, but he isn't the type we need at St Kilda. He is really a Birchall type and another flanker is the last thing we need. His team-mate Eli Templeton would be a fantastic addition, his endurance is elite and he is a nice kick.
We need SOMEBODY with a name that nobody can spell, now that Koschitzke, Kozitchke... er, Kosi's gone.

my backline looks like this next year. if we get bruce and delaney and dont trade out:

B Wright Bruce Fisher
HB Roberton Delaney Webster

so all of gilbert, gwilt, simpkin, lever can all be put on the trade table. i would keep gwilt as he is very versatile and could take the other BP when fisher moves on, we could look at replacing him long term later

If this draft is full of great mids why are we looking at viv?. Surly the only players we should be trading for are KPD and that we just keep developing the mids we draft.
Because the most likely scenario is we get him for Ledger in a trade. Otherwise, Ledger will just be delisted, so Michie is better than nothing. Besides, he's done VERY well in the WAFL, and is almost a bit like Curren was, in terms of State FL performance.

Thats the one...Wright and Webster waiting on the Flanks and Pocket positions

Maybe even have Fisher as loose man barking orders.

I like this, shame about Seany D spending the year in the 2's.
I think Fish is not a 22 game prospect next year...I'd rather Seany i think.
Gilbo should move to the middle.
Newnes & Webster are interchangeable as are Wright & Gears.

I like Simpkin for depth (costs less) & Lever to the rookie list, Gwilt & Fish are on the outer?

If we are going to use pick 39 on Bruce, would Pick 58 get Delaney over the line?

I think we need stability down there and to have a structure that works if injuries hit.

IMO Option 1
B: Wright Delaney Dempster
Loose: Fisher
HB: Gilbert Bruce Roberton
-------------------------------
If injuries hit/midfield rotations ect
B: Newnes Delaney Geary
Loose: Simpkin
HB: Siposs Bruce Dal Santo
