.
Why didn't we do a deal to pay some of Dals contract with money from our own salary cap we have the space. Dal gets more money and theoretically we get better compensation because his salarys larger.

Essentially we could have ended up with pick 4. I'm sure there's some saught of loophole.
I'm pretty sure that his official contract has to go under North's cap.
We could pay the actual dollars but its still under North's cap.

Yep, well, he sounds gutted, like many who follow our club and love/loved these guys are, I imagine. It's not good to be in such a state that we have to let the likes of them go. You want those types playing out their careers at the one club, ideally and getting the sort of send-off that we gave Milne, Kosi and Blake recently, Banger a few years ago and Burkey and Loewey a decade ago.
Didn't 'pick' it though, did he? :p

Surely we're not done trading players.
Trading McEvoy, losing Dal and bringing in Savage and a couple of picks so far is a far cry from being aggressive.

Maintaining consecutive picks in a draft is actually a hallmark of aggression.

If one were to hypothetically space out the same picks as 16, 18, 20, 22 etc it provides a chance for other clubs to jump in and claim any players we had as 'next' on our draft board.

Consecutive picks are 'free' picks and the more the better. No interruptions... purely action of intent.

Well can't we work it out logically. Right now how many spots on the list do we have available?

Gone:
Kosi
Milne
Blake
Dal
Mac
Ledger
Lever

IN:
Savage
Curren

Is it plausible for us to draft 3 players, upgrade Curren, AND bring in Delaney and Bruce (even Longer?)
If we delist Shenton and/or Ferguson, yes.

The AFL are going to scrap the compo's next year any way.
As they should.

Compensation should only apply to players that clubs have considered 'project' status or have already set a price on after 3-4 years in a list.

'How willing is the club to keep Young Player X? Oh, that willing. Ok, keep him.'

It promotes development rather than premiership hunting. A win for the sport overall.

Pick 25 for Nick Dal Santo.... Whilst Melbourne get Pick 23 for Colin Sylvia! ahahahaha what a joke
It's all relative to the finishing position for a reason. We finished 1 spot and 3 games ahead of Melbourne didn't we?

Are you saying that Melbourne losing Sylvia is of no loss on their part overall? Where does Dal Santo really sit in our scheme of things? Shouldn't premiership teams be forced to take lower picks for their FA's after a year of getting used to the rule? Will Hawthorn really miss Franklin that much?

The value of compensation isn't relative to the player; it's relative to where the team finished, which is why it's placed directly behind the sorted pick.

You couldnt have put that in one post?
In a forum Utopia, yes I could, however it's difficult to come home and deal with the day's proceedings, encompassing all relevant thought into one gargantuan post that no-one will read in a justified manner.

What's my 30-odd posts in a stream compared to someone else's 30-odd posts in periodic intervals?

Not one iota of difference.

Post 1: 'What if we'd have thrown in X for Y?'

Post 2: 'Why not?'

Post 3: 'I'm so gutted'

Post 4: 'Woe is me, I'm going to microwave my membership'

Post 5: 'You know what, I'm starting to see the light now'

With our need for quality Midfielders and all the praise Freo is getting for their Tall Mids is that something that will be the new normal it what recruiters are looking for? And why is there no love anymore for Aish he was the man a few weeks ago and now its all aboard the billings express? If GWS do go in with 1 and 2 i would take whichever midfield they choose first and boyd second so he dosnt have that pressure that comes with the Number One status ie Jack Watts-Nic Nat

Much of trading is the good players going to the good clubs - by which I mean, the ones that have the most money/best facility or are a genuine finals threat. Losing compo picks probably will hurt the smaller clubs more, widening the gap between someone like and us and a club like Collingwood.

However, the current FA system is a joke, and i'm not a fan of the way the compensation pushes all other teams one spot down the draft order when they were not involved in the deal at all.

I don't know what the solution is though. Getting rid of the salary cap floor would be a solid start.
The solution is to force the club who holds the player to offer something of value.

If they don't provide a legitimate offer, they don't get any compensation or they get lower compensation.

Was a mistake he left, he knew it..
Stan had lost the players also, & then along came Watson..:(
There's a reason that hack went straight to the media after losing our gig. ie. he was so shit no-one else touched him with a 40' pole and haven't in the 10 years since.

Remember that when listening to his 'special' comments.
