Ok lets try this again.
Billy Longer will be a Lion next year if a deal can't be done... He will not risk the unkown in the draft and the Saints and Lions know it.
We declined pick 18 from the Hawkes without thought..... So why would we suddenly think 25 is a better deal?

I really think Armitage fills a good age gap for us and is a Qld boy. He was one of the highlights for you guys when we played you. I really think it will be him and at least pick 25. Otherwise we keep Longer, who is already a great tap ruckman..... Great forward though???? Not yet.
Its not an unknown in the draft. The difference is that StKilda can have an early PSD pick.
No way would I want us to offer Armitage AND pick 25.
We'll end up a total basket case if we start trading our proven 25 year olds to get younger players who are still more potential than ability. ( and in this case we'd be effectively be trading both McEvoy and Armitage to get Longer ).
We'd be chasing our tail.
In the end we can function with Hickey and Stanley ( and get a cheap backup ).
I don't see us as desperate for Longer.

And therein lies the fulcrum of power in this negotiation!

Essendon would want massive overs in return for him, i'd expect him to remain at Essendon.
Last I heard we were very keen but I suspect we were trying to swap Dal Santo for him.
Ah well, it was a nice thought while it lasted.

Pelchen is the Stephen Milne of the trade table. Turns an inch into a mile, makes something out of nothing. The bloke is a deadset gun!!!!
And like Milne, every other supporter is so jealous of us for having him that all they can do is hate him ;)

Paul Connors is Billy Longer's manager from memory, doesn't he have a decent record of getting players to the clubs they want to get to even through the drafts? I know he did it with Luke Ball.

yeah Paul Conners is also the man that said Billy will be a Lion if a trade cant be done..... Soooooo balls in your court guys.... We know pick 18 couldn't get it done......

Since you seem to know everything, what's the lotto numbers?

I don't know everything but i listen and read every quote when its about our pick 8 ruckman wanting to leave. I think a fair deal will be struck where you guys acquire a 10 year elite ruckman and we get an ok pick and a player.... I'm hoping for Armitage.
If you guys play hardball Billy Longer wont risk being stuck in GWS playing second fiddle to Mumford. He wants home guaranteed or he'll stay another year in Brissy

Lion Billy Longer set to become a Saint
St Kilda is poised to snare Brisbane ruckman Billy Longer after the 20-year-old, who wants to return home to Victoria, made the Saints his club of choice.
The Lions had been in talks with Hawthorn about a potential trade for Longer, but they grew more confident of keeping the ruckman – one of five young players eager to depart the club – after the Hawks orchestrated a surprise trade for Saints' big man Ben McEvoy.
Longer was contacted by Brisbane teammates and coaching staff in a bid to persuade him to withdraw his trade request following the McEvoy deal, to no avail.
St Kilda holds four picks inside the top 25 at November's draft (3, 18, 24 and 25) after receiving pick 18 in exchange for McEvoy and pick 25 as compensation for the loss of Nick Dal Santo to North Melbourne.

Saints head of football Chris Pelchen said it was too early to speculate on what it would take to satisfy the Lions, who are also trying to get the best-possible returns for Jared Polec, Elliot Yeo, Patrick Karnezis and Sam Docherty.

Longer, hey? What the hell, why not. Don't want us to give up too much for him though. If we think we're getting him for pick 25 I think it's going to be a very long week though. Probably need to throw in someone like Gilbo, maybe for 29 in return.

Didn't Pelchen say in that letter the other day that we won't be using free agency until 2016?

Nothing to get too excited over in 2014 I imagine. The list would only appeal to clubs in top-up mode. 2015 looks better.
Pelchen said in his open letter that we wont be targeting any free agents until 2016:

http://www.saints.com.au/news/2013-10-11/pelchens-open-letter-to-members

Our strategy includes increasing our draft activity by 50% in the first 3 rounds of the AFL National Draft over the next four years. Initially, our plan was to secure three selections inside 20 at this year's draft - an outcome we remain determined to achieve prior to the end of the 2013 AFL Trade Period.
St Kilda will not be actively pursuing Free Agency options in 2013 as it does not form part of our strategy for this year. Current Free Agency rules provide for players aged 26+ years old - hence, this demographic does not represent our key focus at this stage of our list transition.
We have deliberately re-positioned our TPP model over the past 24 months from an extremely defensive (ie. constrained) position to a more balanced position in 2014/15 that will then allow us to aggressively pursue Free Agent players from 2016 onwards.
While the AFL National Draft remains a strategic priority for the Saints in the short term, we will continue to be active during the AFL Trade Period going forward. We understand the need to restore the balance to our player list through both forms of recruitment - essentially, the draft and trade systems.
On another note the 50% increase in the first 3 rounds over the next four years means we have to find 6 extra picks some how. I'm not sure if that would include the 2013 draft or not but that is a decent number of extra picks to pick up. At the moment we have got 1 extra pick in the first 3 rounds.

At this point I think we will pick up Longer (if we can get him for a good price), Bruce and Delaney and then leave more big trades till next year. Imagine what we could do if we get picks 1 & 2 next year if all the big key position players look the goods!

Waa waa waa pick 8 ruckman.
Wake up, your pick 8 ruckman is not worth our pick 9 ruckman + our pick 9 midfielder even if we did get Savage.

There is no way Armo is going any where. I promise you that now.
I agree with you though. I don't think Bris will deal him just for the pick so, honestly I can't see the deal getting done. Gilbert's from QLD i think. Think the club wants him long term too. Stanley is Watters golden boy so can't see him going either. Maybe they'll do a pick swap.
