Gilbert & 23 to g.c for 7. Mcevoy and 3 to gws for Adams and 1. That was in my dream last night, I'd say it's a 90% chance of happening.... ;)

I have no idea how we would pull all that off haha

Adams, Boyd, Brown and Billings would all involve our first rounder some how. Where are we going to get 4 of them

Assuming the word is that GWS will take Boyd I'd look at trading picks 3 and 22ish for Adams and 10 and then hope we can grab one of Billings/Crouch/Dunstan/Kelly.

What are people seeing in Griffiths that Im not? I'd be just as keen on Astbury.

I think we can get Adams and pick 3 (Boyd) by giving up a good player (Gilbert, Dempster) and our 2nd round draft pick which will be around 21 or 22. Whether GWS would go for it I don't know.

Exactly, Punter. The upshot of my constantly banging on about the poor clearance work, is realising that it's the beginning of a chain, but the rest of the chain is looking pretty promising.

Throw in a good strong +195cm KPD, to mix it up in the backline with all of Wright, Roberton, Stanley (I still think that's his spot), Gilbert, etc - that's going to be one hell of a backline.

Throw in Lee and/or Spencaa into our forward line, with Saad past his 2nd year blues, Riewoldt, a fit Sippos, and a more experienced Hickey as Ruck/forward, and you've got one hell of a forward line. Add Boyd, and it's getting scary.

Throw in Macca around the ground and filling a hole in defence, and Hickey for the tap and stretching things in the forward line, with Pierce growing as a backup, and that's one hell of a ruck combo.

Strengthen the clearance work, and the run in the midfield - recognising that already, Steven is looking like a future star, Armitage is growing into a solid Luke Ball type, Ross is looking like with 25 games he'll be a very good midfielder, Webster is a jet - you've got the start of a great midfield.

Once the midfield is strong, and they get first go with the pill, the forward line will have more opportunities to score; and the backline will have less work to do, which they will be more than capable of coping with.

It all revolves around fixing the midfield, and getting necessary experience into the talented kids we've got. But PART of that, is making sure it's the RIGHT experience - and losing isn't a great part of that. Still, I'm hopeful.

I know you're slightly tongue in cheek especially the second one. Ben is being talked about as a future captain. From a dispassionate point of view it would be fantastic but for mine I like to deal with reality ;)

Of GWS? :D Could be as early as next year.
Not sure how he'd go at Sydney though, he's a Holden ute sort of guy.
If Jack can perform the kind of work he did when he got the opening goal last week , he'll get my vote for Captain.

I wouldn't be trading pick 3 come hell or high water...

But as far as the above goes, the reason I (and I suspect others) keep 'picking' Griffiths is his size, his versatility and the fact that he was highly regarded at one point; maybe a change of scenery and a solid run in the seniors may rejuvenate him.

Also, I like Astbury a lot, but Astbury seems pretty highly regarded down at Punt Rd, and he'd most likely be a lot harder to get a hold of, even with Rance's emergence of late. Plus he has an ordinary injury history. Admittedly, so does Griffiths, but his issues are mainly shoulders as I recall, which aren't necessarily as bad a chronic knee issues.

I was reminded over on (*ugh*) Saintsational that Cale Hooker is out of contact at the end of this year; 196cm, 97kgs, proven at the level, usually does a pretty good job on Roo. Main knock is pace, although in the fuss over Franklin's goals against Essendon last year I thought no one gave any credit to Hooker - had no chance of actually catching Buddy, but keep chasing the whole way and never gave up on it. I give him enormous credit for that.

He was a piece of the puzzle in the late trade attempt for Brown last year from memory; discouragingly for us, it fell over because he didn't want to leave the Jimmy and the Injectors. And looking at the trajectories of them and us, why would he want to now, especially seeing as he's getting games.

Having watched the Stingrays all year I disagree that Hartung is carrying the side. Whilst he's been very impressive and in great form I think there are others in that team that have consistently stood up. In my opinion it's their two defenders - the very underrated captain Nathan Foote and Zac Jones - who have both been consistant performers each week. Jones plays very attacking football and Foote consistantly wins the hard ball & extracts it out to his team mates. Foote sets up plenty of attacking plays with his speed and ball use. Hartung might look impressive since his return, but I am also impressed with others in that team.
Please don't tell Uncle B that they are 195cm/95kg's :D

I don't think the Brooks trade was confusing at the time at all... Barry was a highly rated junior ruckman who had spent a year in one of the most highly regarded programs in the AFL (at the time). He was behind Primus & Lade & had obviously shown enough at SANFL level to be considered trade worthy to the Saints at the time.

Barry is a perfect example of a bloke who couldn't fully overcome the mental side of a knee reco... Giving up both 6 & 31??? That's a different debate.

Having said all that, it would have been nice having McIntosh as our #1 ruck during the mid-late 2000's.

Yes - all good points W2L. I am trying to see if we got another pick in return for giving up #6 and #31 but it doesn't look like it. We used pick #17 on Luke Penny but I think that was our second round pick anyway??? Or perhaps we got Brooks and pick 17 in return for pick#6 and #31? Makes it a more sensible selection. It is hard to work out because pick 17 appears to have been touched by about 5 clubs. I know Brooks was rated highly as a Junior but I saw him up close several times and I thought he was too narrow in the shoulders and thin to ever be a leading ruckman. I guess if they went in knowing that we would get Penny + Brooks in return for picks 6, 17 and 31 they may have though it was a good deal given depth in the draft etccc. I don't think it was - but I have hindsight on my side ;) Penny was a gun and sorely missed when he retired early.

In fairness to Hooker, I think he saw the situation at West Coast and thought he'd be in the same boat as Mitch Brown is now, where as being at Essendon he plays in the ones. As it was his call, it was an understandable one.
I wonder what kind of $$ he's on at the Injectors... As he'd certainly play ones from day dot with us...

I was mostly referring to Hartung's game on the day and also the last couple of weeks.

Luke Penny was traded to St Kilda for pick 17 in 2002, which was the 1st pick in the 2nd round. The Doggies selected Cameron Faulkner with the pick, from whom they got 18 games and 80 total kicks.

In was in 2001 that pick 17 started at Richmond, and went through Melbourne, Fremantle, St Kilda and Sydney before finally ending at Geelong, being used to draft James Kelly. We got it in the Barry Hall trade and then used it to acquire Heath Black.

Thanks Punter. I do remember 17 doing the rounds in 2001. Where I am confused is that in 2002 - apparently Essendon traded Chris Heffernan and pick #17 to Melbourne in exchange for pick #12. How pick #17 ended up at St Kilda from Melbourne is unclear. we passed it to Bulldogs for Penny and they used it to draft Cameron Faulkner. check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2002_AFL_Draft Perhaps this is incorrect.

I don't really know of any state players who are defenders.. most promising KPP make their way onto.A list early on.. state leagues rarely produce KPP as opposed to flankers and mid fielders.
I don't see much development in Sully, but I know the reason he isnt on a list already is because of his attitude and lack of professionalism. I'm a Ballarat boy, and knew Sully during his time at the Rebels.
I'd rather an Astbury type. He came through the system around the same time as Sully ( a year or two before) and he's a far better player and person. Had he not been injured so often I'd see him as one of the best young defenders in the Comp. But he's been ruinned by injuries thus far. as far as Sullys flog-o-metre rating he's about an 8 out 10. Rude, arrogant and lazy. Not the best combo

A roughie who I can see us drafting (who we looked at last year) is Hayden Walters from East Point in the Ballarat Football League. He's a 20year old inside mid who can also go forward and kick goals.
Has a massive workrate and a ready to go frame (187cm 90kg) was recently named BOG in interleague round. I'd be very surprised if we don't give him a chance to train with us this year. Could seriously be anything. IMO he'd offer more than Seb Ross having watched Walters beat the likes of he, Aylett (gws) and Jake Melshkam through out his junior days. And a ripping lad from humble beginnings.
Big H!

This bloke?
http://www.thecourier.com.au/story/...r-hayden-walters-is-having-a-breakout-season/

Sounds like a good, old-fashioned, 'coal-face' midfielder to me. If he's got above average pace he could be exactly what we need, and at 20 or 21 should be ready to go.

The bits that stand out from that article:
A formidable size for a 20-year-old,
and put together:
In what has been a breakout year for the East Point midfielder, Walters has been named best on ground for the Kangaroos in three of five games so far.
Combine that with a second best on ground against Ballarat and a fifth best against Bacchus Marsh and Walters’ rap sheet is already more than impressive in 2013.
and
Upon his return for the 2012 season, he made catching up with mates a high priority.
“When I came back and caught up with a few mates we got on the sauce and sort of fell a bit behind the eight ball, as you do,” he said.
“It’s different this year though. You recover a lot better not being out on the drink, then you feel a lot fresher on the Tuesday training and it all flows from there.”

And it sounds like a young bloke who's prepared to work his arse off to make it. That sound about right? Also good if he doesnt offend the "no dickheads" policy

I still think St.Kilda's chances of securing Tom Boyd are very slim, but I think you're a real chance to land Cameron Conlon with your second round pick:

On big-bodied midfielders, have a look at this kid from the Falcons:

# 25. Matthew Boag
DOB: 9 April 1995
Ht: 185cm
Wt: 90kg
Club: Torquay

Bloody good size. Another Falcon would give that toss-bag BT a hard on, but they have a reputation for pumping out tough little midfielders.

Anyone know anything about him?
