This is a big hypothetical by the way lads - but say Carlton came knocking for pick #2 and offered up Yarran, Robinson and Kane Lucas.

That's two eight year best 22 mids and an inconsistent freak in Yarran (who'd play off a back flank you'd think).

I'm not sold on that myself, but Roos has stated he thinks we have enough top-end talent that we can use pick #2 to fill some gaps.

Robinson and Yarran are certainly good players (and are rumoured to not get on with Mickles) - Lucas had a pretty good year for a young fella, looks like he could become a good player.

Mahoney's flagged the possibility of a trade like this as well.

I would take it. Lucas has shown glimpses as a good mid, Robinson is a contest football hard nut that we need and Yarran gives us some pace and x factor off a HBF

Pass.

Melbourne has enough B/C graders (more of the latter) and injury-prone players. Also, these kind of players can be picked up for cheap via free agency.

You don't build a team around players of this quality. As it stands, Melbourne doesn't even have a genuine A grader in the side.

Sure, but say we can't get an A-Grader.

Roos seems to think that if we develop Viney, Toumpas, Trengove and Watts that will give us at least a couple in the midfield.

#2 doesn't give us an instant A-Grader either.

To justify using pick 2 we really need to get some quality, and there is just not enough quality in those three, but I agree we may have to look at getting in multiple top end B graders, as securing A grade talent may be beyond us at the moment.
Understand where you are coming from though and would have to look at deals like this to fill our most outstanding needs.

At the risk of starting some fights, we (OWAAT) have just published our off season look at the Dees...

Age of list, strengths, weaknesses, untouchables, trade bait, suggested moves...
  • Trade Pick #2 and something else for either Rory Sloane or David Swallow
  • Trade Jack Watts and second round pick for Taylor Adams and third round pick
  • Sign Daniel Cross as a free agent
Full article here... http://www.oneweekatatime.com.au/afl-offseason-melbourne/

PS - Don't shoot the messenger ;)

Nothing outrageous there. Wouldn't trade Watts though; if we can convince Adams that we're the best option (given he won't sit down to talk to us, no chance), then best scenario for us is that he nominates for the PSD and we pick him up at #2.

Suspect it could be a deal involving a pick and Adams from GWS.

The only direct player swap I could imagine would be Gaff, if he has made it known to the club he is desperate to return at the end of his contract however I doubt it. He has stated before he is happy and our new head coach hasn't even had time to sit down with the list managers, so it seems a very unlikely scenario.

Mmmmm outside of that and at an extreme stretch Sidebottom?

Would you trade pick 2 for bastinac and atley?
Great question, as an impartial observer I actually think you should.

Admittedly did not see a ton of North or Dees in 2013 though.

Added midfield depth would be nice and not having to wait for young talent to contribute would be nice also, I imagine.

Ok so I want pick two from you guys. To start I offer pick 15 and Varcoe what else would be needed to get the deal done.

Pick 2 is for QUALITY not QUANTITY.
Agree with this. Even though we need mids thats three spots taken up on our list with Yarran being the only good player, and that is when he feels like it. Robinson is alright and Lucas is shithouse. Interesting hypothetical though. Get quality or use it on the draft IMO.

Varcoe doesn't really provide us with a a solution to our needs...we need mids so I personally wouldn't look at it. plus he has only played 15 games in 2 years.
We have enough players with injury problems at the moment.

So as others have said you are probably looking at someone like Duncan or Christensen?
