Sure, but say we can't get an A-Grader.

Roos seems to think that if we develop Viney, Toumpas, Trengove and Watts that will give us at least a couple in the midfield.

#2 doesn't give us an instant A-Grader either.

You can never have enough A-graders in a side. Besides, even if Viney, Toumpas, Trengove and Watts miraculously turned out ok, Melbourne would still be around a 6-8th ranked side. Think Carlton: Murphy, Gibbs, Simpson, Judd, Scotland, Carazzo. If Hogan turns out ok, then the comparison is St Kilda: Riewoldt, Hayes, Dal Santo, Goddard, Montagna (and Ball) - still didn't have enough of a cutting edge to win a premiership even with those players.

If we can't get an instant A-grader via trade, then Melbourne ought to draft someone with A-grade potential and bloody well develop them properly, for once. If this Roos is as good as he is getting paid, he should be able to pick the right rookie and develop them properly.

Yeh, I don't mind that so much.

I just think the idea behind trading pick #2 is to develop our culture and our list as quickly as possible - next year we'll have the opportunity to draft another young gun with a likely top 6-10 pick.

Even with Roos, I don't think we can last another terrible season like the past two - without a exodus of required players.

I think if we get the opportunity to trade in one gun or multiple top 10 players - we should seriously consider it.

Would you trade pick 2 for bastinac and atley?
No way would I give up pick 2 for Bastinac and Atley.

While Bastinac is a decent young midfielder, he isn't that first dibs midfielder we want or have the skills to burn teams on the outside. Atley is also a decent young player off half back but those two in a package won't get it done.

We need a true A grade midfielder to trade for. Bastinac and Atley are good young kids but I'll take my chances in the draft.

I reckon the majority can't or won't wait for the years it will take to develop a young bloke with potential into a fully fledged A-grader, hence many are hoping for a quicker fix that bringing the finished article in would bring.
We as supporters probably need to appreciate how difficult it is to try to convince top talent to come to Melbourne and help build something that may never be finished, or go to a Hawthorn,Sydney etc. where you will play finals instantly. Not really a difficult choice as it stands now.
That said we need to get in quality if we trade pick 2 otherwise we will be seen as easily bent over the trade table, this needs to be our line in the sand in regaining a bit of respect and fight.

Pick 2 is worth more than x number of those guys. They're all role-players/journeymen types.
Alone yes, but we get the Geelong first round pick back as well. I think you'll find a few of those guys will be very good players sooner rather than later. And Scully aside, it's tough to be a journeyman footballer at 20/21...

I get where you're coming from.

100+ point drubbings, and blown out of the match within the first 10 minutes should not occur under Roos. I can accept a 4 win season for 2014 as long as the for/against percentage improves to a minimum of 75% - still not great, but must be realistic about things, especially with GC/GWS improving.

I still think we'll finish bottom 3, barring some miraculous recruiting and development. St Kilda, GWS and us are behind the rest of the comp, although if the Giants pick up a few older heads and their kids kick on, we'll lose touch with them as well.

Someone mentioned earlier adding to pick 2 to enhance an offer for Rockliff. I know some will dislike this but here goes:

Pick 2 and Fitzy to Bris
Rockliff, Banfield, and Docherty to Melbourne. Variation if Docherty wants to head somewhere else he goes there and we receive their 2nd or 3rd round pick in return.

Before I get caned, Bris are desperate for a key forward (if not now they will be very soon) and we really have surplus in that area. Also, I would rather keep Fitzy - and fully aware he's just re-signed, but I think we get more out of him right now by trading him.

Rockliff goes without saying but I think Banfield can be a good small forward just needs a new start. I also see him, Blease and Byrnes rotating as small forwards and midfield/wing. Docherty I like but think he wants to head elsewhere and he's not really the midfielder we need, so potentially swap him out for Karnezis, or even Lions 3rd round pick.

Just a thought.

Both together are not worth pick 2.
Lol are you super serial? Not to be rude in your own thread but there wouldn't be a bloke on your list much if at all better than those two. You'd want to hope Roos has a much better development program than was present in the past. I know you've been burnt before with bad drafting of mature players (Clark aside) but I think Roos knows what he is doing going after mature blokes.

Or do you think this year's draft is really strong?

If we get a Roughead, Thomas, Cotchin, Naitanui, Bennell or Coniglio, I'll be stoked. Walker, Wells or Ball would be very good.

Gumbleton would be a nightmare (good player when he plays. Doesn't play). Difficult to judge Trengove and O'Rourke.

3 out of 4 chance of success!

If we do go through the draft though we seriously need someone to come on as quickly as Bennell and Coniglio have in pretty poor sides. Or even Trengove in 2010 and 2011 (before the curse of the captaincy ):
