Nobody is going to pay Betts 600k, nobody. We would be one of three clubs who would pay him 450k and probably the only one who would give him a three year contract
I have said before, I am not sure about chasing Betts at all costs. He is not that good. The last thing we would want to do is buy ourselves another Tambling. Its a big "IF" if he can get back to anything remotely close to the form he had in previous years and to me its nothing but gambling. based on Betts form this season I wouldn't offer anymore then a 3rd round draft pick and a two year contract. Must come cheap. Betts would have to want to come to Adelaide to reignite his career not come for a payday.

Personally, the jury is still out on Henderson a bit. He's had a streaky career, alternating between brilliant and insipid. He's been excellent since Reilly went down, but I think his disposal is suspect (long, penetrating and visually attractive kick, not necessarily accurate) and he has zero left side.

On balance, I'd rather keep him, but if he's going to go I can't help but feel we are in a good position as a seller.

James ? ;)

Cooney seemed more of a luxury than a real need, get him if you can, but not a huge loss if he didn't come.
Agreed. Plus this has probably been the best season he has had out of the last 4 seasons and has had massive knee problems. There are huge question marks over his long term future. He isn't the sort of player now where you would gamble on enticing him with a huge contract.

But you're shipping off McKernan, so he doesnt fill anything. We just move from one scrub ruckman to another. Treading water.

If we have to lose Henderson we have to do better than Gorringe/Polec.
I'm keen on getting both Gorringe and Polec, but that's on the proviso we can get them cheap, either rd 3 pick onwards or PSD.

Henderson should net us something significantly more than one of these 2.

I personally wouldn't call switching McKernan for Gorringe as treading water. For starters Gorringe is genuine ruck height, unlike McKernan who is undersized, plus Gorringe is only 3 years into his career and showing as much as McKernan.

Whatever happens, I think it's time McKernan is moved on, he clearly isn't going to succeed at Adelaide. Gorringe would make for an ideal replacement, with the potential to become a mobile quality #1 ruckman, or develop into that 2nd ruck/KPF we'd hoped McKernan would become.

Pretty much said prior t the draft Port was the only team he didnt want to play for. And sooked when he was drafted there.

This was a year ago, so they might have convinced him
Pretty much said? Do you have a source? Article?

Or is this one of those 'you just have to take my word on it... again' statements?

Agree about not chasing him at all costs, but I think realistically we're going to have to 'overpay' players some what, or just kick back and watch them go to other clubs. We're not Collingwood, or Sydney, or West Coast. We cant use the 'big club' factor to lure players and expect them to play for less than they think they're worth.

Lets say the AFC really want Eddie Betts. Then we have to demonstrate that to him and make it worth his while. If we keep focusing on trying to land 'good deals' we'll likely never attract quality players. In this new free agency system, players have the power. Players might also get the perception that Adelaide is a good option, if other players have come here.

I'd prefer the club to say "yep, this is the guy we wanted, and we got him". If we have the money to get the players we want, then use it and make it a happen. Fair enough if you dont rate him on the back of this season, but his value isnt soley based on that. He'd be a huge addition to our forward line IMO.

Not 600k good definitely but he is very good at his role, a role that we employed 2 people to play last year. He would fill a massive hole in our current line up. I think people get way too hung up on his managers price tag, he won't get near that 1.3-1.4 for 3 years. Hell we are paying Mackay that now.

The last thing we would want to do is buy ourselves another Tambling. Its a big "IF" if he can get back to anything remotely close to the form he had in previous years and to me its nothing but gambling.
Betts is not the first indigenous small forward to struggle with Malthouses game plan and he wouldn't be the last. It is a bit disingenuous to compare him to Tambling, Betts has runs on the board and as far as small forwards go, very big runs.

He is a free agent there is nothing to trade for. He will reignite his career anywhere he goes outside of Carlton

That's where we disagree. He isn't any better then a good 2nd tier player. You don't throw money at those players. Plus we rotate heavily through that small forward position with our midfield. I cant see Betts in that rotation. We would have to have a game plan that consisted of a permanent small forward to make the acquisition of Betts worth while.

What are you boards thoughts on Alan Didak? Still performing reasonably well at Collingwood (with limited opportunities), but has seemingly fallen out of favor with Buckley. I'd be keen to get him over to Port, but he'd probably have more value to the Crows if you were to be pushing for a flag in the next year or 2.

he would be good as a depth player/potential starting 22. not sure about his long term ability. could be good for Port though. Collingwood would want Wines for him.

And you've seen him play .....how many times again?
I could count them on one hand since hes been at Brisbane. I just cant see how a kid as talented as he was hasnt pushed on like his mate Smith has. Not saying hes a bad player but hes not necessary to us. As for Gorringe, hes exactly the type of player we need if Smack goes. Unless we have huge faith that Dowdell or Osbourne comes up to speed.

One off season out of the last 5 and he's 26. Why exactly is getting back to form a big "IF"? Personally, I think having guys like Tex and Jenkins to work around would do wonders for him.

injuries ......aka Shaw ....it really holds back young player development BUT not their talent

I have high hopes for Obourne ....but that said, we are too thin on talls and need to keep McKernan & get Gorringe .....and hope Osboune develops so we are not dependant on Graham

Very tempting. Could come to Port via unrestricted free agency, but I'm sure Rhode will offer a trade instead.
Hasn't he already stated that this season will be his last? I seem to recall him saying that he wanted to head over to Brazil next year to watch the World Cup.

beggars can't be choosers ......we hardly hold the high ground & we NEED TO GET NEW TALENT in

We're a slow team and people want to trade Henderson ......give me break

Makes good sense ....trade out speed and retain slow
