I don't have a problem with us chasing him. I just don't see why he's a "must get" player. He's been in the system for 3 years now, achieving precisely zero in that time. I know that injuries have taken their toll - but that only serves to decrease his value further, as he now has a reputation for being injury prone. After 3 years he's still trading on the "potential" that he showed before being drafted.
There is absolutely nothing there that spells "must get". Would I be happy if Adelaide got him on the cheap (in terms of draft picks)? Absolutely. Should we be throwing the kitchen sink at Brisbane in order to trade for him? Absolutely not.

In a normal year we need to weigh up our options. We have to bring in X players, and we have various free agency options, trade possibilities, and draft picks to fill those spots.
This year our draft picks are worth considerably less than normal, so the value of free agency and trading to us is comparatively higher. At the same time, we have extra cash bouncing around, which can be very useful in getting free agency/trade deals over the line.
At a time where, comparatively, cash is less valuable to us than normal, and free agency/trading is more valuable to us than normal, we need to look for the best available options in both free agency and trading. Polec is no star, but he's a player. If he's the best available target, I'm more than happy for us to pay him more than he's worth to get it over the line.
