Do you have any knowledge of Croad at the time?
Um, yes. Do you?

More importantly, to you point - I don't think there's a chance in hell that we could trade Talia for a pick in the top 3.

And if gun key defenders are so easy to come up with, why would a team pay a top pick to trade for one?

Gees trading Talia is the one of the biggest load of crap I've read on this site. The whole idea is to add pieces to the team not give away your best KPP.
I've kept harping back to having two ruckman all season because it has worked for successful teams for a hundred years and one ruck can't carry the whole workload.
The other old adage that still holds true is to build your team around a strong spine.

We now have a key full forward in Walker (though injured he will be back), a promising centre half forward in Jenkins and a key centre half back in Talia. All these blokes have years and years of football ahead of them. Sure Rutten will need replacing but we have a very strong foundation in place and for once none of them look like leaving.
We are extremely well placed for a team that is handicapped with draft picks next year to add a further piece to the puzzle that in the next few years could pay dividends.
Why on earth would you trade away such a proven and vital young KPP player.
Talia in my book is off limits, he is the core ingredient in our somewhat young shaky defence. A defence that is actually beginning to find some stability and shape.
If he left who would we trade or draft in return because a very large component in our defence would first need replacing?

I think a lot of the Talia trade talk seems to come from posters obsessed with getting early draft picks now that they've had picks stripped, or getting a high enough pick to draft James Aish.

Soft spot for Brisbane
Does anyone know the details on the five-team almost trade that the AFL vetoed - the trade that had Gunston in it and would have gotten us the mini draft pick (that we got anyway)?

These blokes shouldnt be allowed to post anymore.
Pull your heads in
Very, very tempting.

Unfortunately, stupidity isn't against the BigFooty posting rules. We'd depopulate the board if we banned all the stupid posts.

I wonder what Bock or Davis would have fetched on the open market. Not as much as Gunston I suspect (or the Tiprat). If we really wanted to trade Talia, we should start playing him at CHF ;)

Just as McAvaney said in the North Melbourne game, Talia is the sort of player you build a defence around. There's also the fact that we need two key defenders for the future and at the moment we've only got Talia who the club seems to have confidence in.

There is a big difference between "cost" of replacement and "ease" of replacement.

While I agree that it is possible to get a gun KPD late in the draft or as a rookie, that doesn't mean you can just pick up any old 195cm spud and assume they will be a gun. Far more fail than succeed.

We agree on this. Precisely why we need to build our defence around Talia.

So just to clarify, your positions is that Hawthorn were idiots for getting Luke Hodge?

When they traded him. Trent Croad wasnt Talia. He was a swingman without a true position. All based on potential. And Hawthorn were in a far far worse position then we are now when they did it. They were building for the future. We are building for a fair dinkum tilt within 3 years

High hopes but free agents failing to make their mark

Free agency was the tool introduced for clubs to ratchet themselves up the ladder. Nine rounds through a season and few sides that fancied themselves to be contending sides have been able to exploit a rise through the arrival of a free agent.

The biggest wildcard of all was the one who was never going to make his side better by this stage of the year. He was a player not recruited to make an average side good, nor a good side better. He was recruited to make the premier the force that would not go quietly into the night. He is Kurt Tippett.

Don't contemplate trading Talia he is going to be the backbone of your defence for the next 10 years.

Some talk about Gorringe returning home, I discussed this with a few of you in the off season in the Tippett ( spits on the ground) mega thread. What is the boards thoughts?

We would like him but I doubt that we would have much that would interest you. Port will have more to offer and they will probably get him unless he nominates us as his preferred destination. Players on the block that could be used in a trade:

Tambling
L. Thompson
Jaensch
Martin
A.Riley
