Got a sneaky that Gibbs has been told to just focus on his footy, get the fire in the belly..looked focused and determined last interview ,lets just hope he can transfer it onto he field.

Hasn't this already been discussed?

It's fairly clear...

If he has another season like 2012 where he was soft, uncommitted and unwilling to step up, then he needs to be traded.

We don't want to repeat the same mistakes with Gibbs that Richmond made with Tambling
Gibbs =/= Tambling

you are a fun one Mr X

See, I just don't get this. While not becoming the player we think he can all be, he's been a consistently good player for the Blues since coming to the club and will be just 24yo this season. You don't fry the kid off one poor season; which even then wasn't abysmal.

to me, the player Gibbs most resembles is Jimmy Bartel.

the both read the play better than most, are versatile enough to play anywhere on anyone and link up well through the contest.

the main difference however is that Bartel is much more of a big game match winner.

I would prefer to see Yarran getting a bullet like pass from Watson from a kickout, turn on the afterburners... laces it out to Gibbs on the HFF who then spots up one of our forwards with a pin point pass.

That being said... having Gibbs, Yarran, Touhy and Armfield who can all nail long range goals on the run is handy.
Armfield?

Walker and Judd with the snap on either side.

Walker with the set shot.
It depends where you are getting your info from. Mr X has it over the rest of us. Particularly those who can't get to the CBD on a regular basis.

There you go!

Gibbs to deliver.

There are certain similarities between the two, but I don't think that's their biggest difference at all.

The biggest difference between Bartel and Gibbs is the way they conduct themselves on the field. One of the major criticisms of Gibbs is that he doesn't impose himself anywhere near as much as he possibly should. At this stage he seems somewhat content to be a bit-part player in any given game rather than exerting himself to truly dominate it.

You don't get the same vibe from Bartel who wants to be the one to control the direction of the game. Hasn't played as much in the middle of the ground in the past season or two as he had previously, but you can see he'll throw his weight around to control a contest and isn't content to let others do the work for him.

Bartel has been a brilliant footballer for a number of years and yes, there are certain similarities between the two. However at this point in time Gibbs is nowhere near Bartel as a footballer, and even further away from it when Jimmy was at his best. Whether that changes in the future remains to be seen but it won't happen unless Gibbs changes he way he goes about his football. Signs are good that he does want to do that starting in 2013 but its all talk until we actually see it on the field.

Have to say that Armfield's last few games showed that he is a pretty handy set shot from 40 meters out and equally as reliable with a running kick from about the same distance - had a very good game against Richmond in round two - he was the player that kept us in the game I thought. Armfield keeps so called rebound runners honest as well - uses his speed to chase and tackle very well - a much improved player for Carlton last year I enjoyed watching him play and the way he goes about it.

Gibbs is talented enough to do a good job wherever he plays - I reckon we will see Gibbsy played forward and back this year. For Gibbs to get to the next level - he has to develop a bit of mongrel and really want to impose himself physically against the best of the opposition. Very capable of becoming a tagging midfielder who can get and use his own ball.

I'm hearing you, but imo youth as an excuse (for want of a better word) is expiring fast for Gibba...this is his time...the time when he grabs the league by the nads and proves he's a far better player than the all too brief glimpses we've had thus far...as I've stated elsewhere, I'm expecting a shiteload from Bryce this year, and am more than confident he'll deliver.

The best part of Gibbs year was when he finally decided to try out those muscles he has been working on in the Essenscum game and, admittedly it was only Short Stheppel, and smashed Stheppel into the ground with a good hit. I think that may be the impetus that Gibbs needed to say "hey... hitting those tossers doesnt hurt me" and actually grow a pair and start throwing his weight around

Who is using youth as any excuse? I'm just pointing out the folly of torching a 23yo kid because of one average season, when he's actually been of the Blues best performers over the other seasons since arriving at the club.

Well I hope if Bryce plays a decent year but not to your shiteload of expectation, that you don't come calling for his head too.

Sorry if I took your 'will be just 24yo this season' as an indication that some concessions must be made beacuse of Gibba's age. I'm coming from the angle that he's had long enough in the system - he is in the prime of his footballing life - to be making much more of the vast talent at his disposal.

And you're perfectly correct; Gibba had been in our top-bracket pre-2012 (still managed 8th in the BnF but he's better than that). I guess I was just making the point that I expect even more of him. Has it in him to be amongst the very best in the league and I'm hopeful that Bryce more than anyone knows that getting there is a constant challenge, but from what I saw on the training track Wednesday he's not out there going through the motions.

Finally, I don't think I've ever called for anyone's head...I've been critical, no doubt, but I'm pretty confident there have been liberal doses of rationale and fairness in there as well.

Gibbs has been in our top 15-12 players at least every season he's played for us
- he's a good player
Now obviously we want him to be in our top 5 bracket - which hopefully a move to the midfield might see him push towards

Regardless we wouldn't cut one of our top players - ludicrous we might not give them a massive contract but wed definitely still want Gibbsy in Blue

I don't disagree with a lot of your post, though I never claimed you called for his head; it's just that that's the point my post - the one you initially quoted - was responding to. And why I brought his age and previous years of form into it. I don't think many would argue Bryce has got more in the tank than he's shown thus far, I just think some posters don't give him credit for the form he has shown since being at Carlton. Sometimes I think BF has it's head up last seasons arse too much (see the Watson > Judd thread on the polls board as my example).

Really? I mean, really? We must have been watching VERY different games last year then.

Please name 3 games against decent sides after Rnd 5, 2012 where he truly stood up and made a difference.
You said he was soft (bullshit), Uncomitted (Bullshiter) not willing to step up (Bullshitest). Come on bloke, he may not be the superstar that Judd/Murphy are, but he was performing a task last year that he was given. We all know he is not a true back flanker, but that is where he was asked to play and IMO he did a bloody good job. If MM letys him play in the mid field, where I believe he was recruited to play, we will see a very different Gibbs.
And the fact you could even think about comparing Gibbs to that hack Tambling is nothing short of insulting.

Play him on the wing. He'd be better off developing his midfield skills and enhancing his strength, versatility, and agility

I'd agree with the wing spot for Gibbs as well. I think he looks at his best in 2 situation:

1. Coming into a contested area late and extracting the ball
2. Hitting up players when he has a bit of space

And I think the wing will give him the ability to do that.
