With trade period just over a week away and us currently having 4 picks in the national draft here is my ideal scenario to get us more picks in the early part of the draft.

Trade Period
1. Trade Grigg to Giants for their second round pick(24)
2. Trade McDonough to Crows for their second round pick(30)
3. Trade Dea & 3rd round pick to Geelong for their second round pick(35)

No real big trades in that scenario and with the above we'd enter the draft with: 12, 24, 30, 32, 35, 68 & 85 With those picks I'd be looking at the following:

12. Lachie Weller 181cm/71kg Midfielder
Instant injection of class and speed to our midfield mix. Ideally starting off the HFF with stints in the middle, he shakes things up for us.
24. Connor Menadue 188cm/69kg Midfielder
Skinny kid heading into the draft but for mine is the exact type of midfielder we need to add to our mix. Tall, with explosiveness and skill he would be a real POD for us moving forward
30. Touk Miller 177cm/80kg Midfielder/Forward
Might be on the short side to some, but the kid is a bull at the contest. Think of him as a Foley replacement, as much like Foley he loves to win a contest and then either breakaway or feed out a handball to the outside mids.
32. Connor Blakely 187cm/81kg Midfielder
With Jackson retiring the addition of another inside midfielder who can win his own footy or lay tackles when the opposition has it would be handy. That's not to say that Blakely is purely inside, he can be just as effective on the outside as well.
35. Toby McLean 179cm/70kg Forward
Without a doubt one of the big needs for us is a small quick goal kicking forward and McLean fits that bill perfectly for mine. The difference with McLean is that he isn't just a crumber, but also someone who can take a grab by sitting on peoples shoulders. Some might say I've taken him too high, but given he'd be our 4th second round pick no reason we can't reach for him.
68. Jason Castagna 182cm/86kg Defender/Midfielder
A speedy midfielder who has moved into defence and become very effective as a rebounding defender. With Houli being our only genuine rebounding mid sized defender adding another would help generate some more run from D50. His size also makes him effective in 1-1 contests and when in possession he uses the ball well as shown by his 73% DE.
85. Anthony Miles (rookie upgrade)

The one constant with most of these players is they possess speed and skill, which is something that we desperately need to inject. While I have no doubt plenty on the board will see this as unrealistic it is something I'd really like to see us attempt as the opportunity is there for us to make some dramatic changes to our list if we can get something like the above done. The loss of Grigg McDonough & Dea IMO wouldn't hurt us that much and the injection of speed could see us take that next step.

This thought literally just came to me... is there ANY chance of Dea being developed into a midfielder? I know he was coming from a fair way back in terms of playing the game, but does he have the tools? What role would he suit or not suit? tigs2010 - you rated him from memory... thoughts?

P.S. like the idea, _EAD_

Trading McDonough just so we can get Touk Miller is pointless. McD has dominated VFL games and shown he can handle AFL, so let's trade him for a kid who's done neither? Not for me.

I'd assume RT is suggesting the trade only if McDonough requests it to happen. Otherwise I agree, it's pointless

Our first pick should be a on a midfielder 185+ minimum

I'd be pretty happy to get Weller with our first pick and be over the moon to nab Blakley at 32. I suspect he will be top 20ish. WA's best midfielder and has produced in the WAFL seniors. I doubt there would be any sides lining up for Grigg and agree that trading McD for a pick is pointless unless someone offers us massive overs which won't happen.

I'm hoping for Weller or Ahern for our first at this stage but am waiting for draft camp to really make up my mind as I think endurance will only become a bigger part of our game as the interchange reduces.

With the exception of weller, looking at the players most likely available at our pick, I'd rather take a risk on a utility sized player than a smaller bodied mid

I'd like Laverde but I don't think he will still be on the board. I also wouldn't mind Menadue, Langford or Lam but I think at our pick they are all reaches. Who do you have in mind.

The other one that I am pretty keen on is DeGoey - who is probably available and not too much of a reach at 11. I think he could develop as a really nice mid/forward who could go in the rotation with Cotch, Lids and Dusty.

I only suggested trading McDonough as I know the Crows are interested, whether anything comes of that who knows, but if it does and McDonough wants out then try and get their second pick as compensation and look at getting the best available kid with that pick. If he doesn't want to go then I'd look a trading out Batchelor. IMO the reason why the likes of Dea McDonough Batchelor & Elton haven't been signed yet despite there being plenty of chance to have done so, is because they are going to either be traded or at least on the table next month.

I would be very interested in looking at Caleb Daniel with our third. Sure, he's tiny, but the upside is enormous. Most late picks are probable busts, with an upper ceiling of a solid role player. Daniel may be a bust because of his size, but if he's not, I could easily see him reaching the level of a Montagna. We're not lacking for size anyway, and could definitely use a player with elite endurance, agility, and skills.

Rookie or nothing for him IMO. Project player.

Hmmmm you wouldn't be a relation would you;).......In any case I'll let the rest know something....Connor is a great kid from an outstanding family and I would love to get him to the RFC - for a 2nd round pick. BTW his cousin is a gem of a footballer as well - Jackson.
Correct on all counts, i have watched a bit of him this year, will fit right in the AFL wherever he is drafted.

Few including us have been in contact with lonie. Seems some are hoping for him to slip through to a second rounder

A kid that really interests me is a Canberra kid which will probably be taken by GWS due to being a academy selection is Jack Steele.

Havnt seen alot of him but really looks like silk and would be a massive get for a 3rd round pick. I actually wouldnt mind if we bid our 2nd rounder really looks like a player
have a look at his clip - Love to know others opinion on this kid

And What a name

JACK STEELE

Some really nice signs from Weller with 20 disposals 2.1 and a couple of pieces of play where he used his speed both with the ball and without the ball was great to see. Cockatoo was best on ground and kicked a ripper goal where he took the ball from a pack in the centre circle burst away with 2 bounces and kicked from 45. I'd love to see us take a chance on the kid with a 3rd round pick, as he clearly has what we''re looking for i.e. class and speed. Coghlan was another good player early on while Hislop racked up 29 disposals in a game where it was straight 20 minute quarters showed some real class as well. Steele who was mentioned above was good as well. Plenty to like from the second division kids that's for sure.
