Kid not the brightest if he chose Essendon, probably a good thing we stayed away ;)

These forums are littered with people that are narrow sighted (probably give the votes to best player in last quarter), Cockatoo was a standout last year in NZ as Level 1 AIS player, the clubs know their ability and is ranked through U16, U17 & U18, not just the National Champs. Cockatoo is a better player than Weller, Duggan etc IMO.

I didn't know the above about Cockatoo. The Lions do like drafting 'fallen stars'. Trying not to get my hopes up.

So currently we have 7 openings is that right? So three, hopefully from academy/father/son and possible upgrade of Bourke using third round and up.'Probable trade for Beams which might take our first two picks. Where does this leave us draft wise and how many spots can we leave open? I expect a possible PS draft pick if needed.

Yeah as little as I know, im hoping we land him. Looks like our type. If we can keep a pick in the 20s we might have a shot. We do like looking for value by gettimg players who have had a down or injury interupted year. Close, Robbo and Cutler some recent examples.

If we go the 38 + 6 list arrangement, plus three Cat Bs, that'd give us seven senior spots to fill and five rookie spots to fill. Upgrade Bourke, for example, and now we've got six senior spots (three nominated, Beams, plus two others) and six rookie spots that can be filled with those six.

Just following on from this discussion in RW.

Some assumptions about our trade/FA/Academy/draft period:

- we gain Beams
- we lose our two early picks and 1 other player
- we take the three nominated players with our 3rd-5th round picks
- we elevate only one rookie

Assuming we do no other trades, am I right that it means that we'd need to take 3 players in the draft with selections after our 5th rounder? If so, they are going to be very late picks.

That seems unlikely to be the plan so I wonder if any of the following are in the picture:

- promote more than 1 rookie
- pick up a delisted FA
- a "two for one" trade
- try and trade back in earlier in the draft (noting that every additional player we trade out means another selection late in the draft)
- not matching a bid that requires us to use our third rounder

I was thinking about the same thing yesterday. We've got seven senior list spots at the moment, though that could drop to six if we want more rookies. I'm also assuming either pick 4 and a 15-25 player or pick 4 + pick 24 at the moment.

Probable ins: Beams, Clayton, Andrews, Dawson.
Picks available: One in either the fourth, fifth or sixth round, depending on bidding, then a seventh and an eighth.

I'd be guessing that we might upgrade ZOB and use the extra rookie spot, taking the seventh and eighth out of the equation. Having said that, I've proven pretty bad at guessing what the club might do previously...

If there are no bids, do the nominated academy kids take up the last draft spots we have free now or whatever our last draft spots would be come draft time?

I think we are waiting for the dust to settle to see what we actually have in our hand to play with. Offers for Patfull and Merrett, Maybe even Crisp as he hasnt signed on yet. Academy bids and the Beams trade who knows what we are going to end up with. Considering the youth on our list, taking 7th and 8th round picks are going to be fairly pointless, I think a delisted FA or 2 might come into play, and maybe looking at trading a pick with the likes of Merrett for an improved pick.

We might have a few smokey picks like ZOB we eye off for the rookie draft as well. Probably keep a list spot or 2 open for rookie promotion next year as well.

Hope we go after a DFA or two. Gotta be better than picks in the 4th 5th and 6th rounds. Should they move the PSD to a mid season draft? I cant see any real point in a PSD anymore.
Once we draft Beams in 2015 from it, scrap it ;)

The AFLPA love it.

I've often thought it is pretty useless. Why not just throw everyone in the 1 draft. The only reason i think it still holds value is so that after the draft, clubs have a chance to take a breathe, have a look at the list, see who is still available and if anyone they are interested is still there. Has been some decent pick ups from the PSD over the years.
