Dempsey isn't what we need at all. I think at the moment we need to build our team from within, and I'd rather pump games into prospects like Cutler, Golby and Harwood off a HBF.

Any mature-age or experienced players we look at bringing in need to have one standout quality for mine - leadership. We already have some quality cattle, we just need them to be steered in the right direction. Dempsey isn't what we need.

Dempsey would be a pass for me. Fragile on and off the field. Never played a full season with this being his 9th season. Career average of 16 disposals per game and prone to disappear for long periods. Defensively below average. Offensively he is quite a good runner but his skills can let him down. He has only averaged over 70% by foot once in the last 5 years. With the ball in hand he reminds me a lot of Yeo but he does not have Yeo's defensive proess.

A little bit draft relevant for you guys. Nice article about Liam Dawson and Matt Hammelman from the AFL website

Matt Hammelmann in action for Queensland last season

FOR the past five years, Liam Dawson and Matt Hammelmann have trained with the Brisbane Lions Academy each summer, hoping to eventually join the club on a permanent basis.

This season will determine if that happens for one, or both, of the Queenslanders.

Dawson and Hammelmann are tied to the club as zone Academy players, meaning the Lions have priority access to them.

Like the father-son process, another club can bid for the pair, but the Lions can match the bid ahead of the draft and secure the players, which they did last year with tall forward Jonathan Freeman.

seems like a really nice couple of kids you guys have the chance at grabbing. Good luck for both of them.

Free agent? If contracted trade polkinghorne for him...or lisle

Essendon Reserves wouldn't want them, even after most of the reserve team get a little promotion to the big time ;)

Durdin will be playing in the Foxtel Cup tonight apparently for those who want to watch (and have Foxtel).

On free agents it is worth noting that Jessie Hogan remains unsigned with Melb beyond next year. He has stress fractures in his back atm but personally I still throw a heap of money at him and try and get him. The kid is a massive talent and would sort our forward problems out better than anyone. I would rather have Hogan than Patton every day of the week.

9 year $10 mil deal

I agree with you on Hogan.

Throw a truckload of cash at him next year and pick up a KPF with our first pick this year. And that should mean we're good for Key Defenders and Key Forwards. And we can focus on other areas from that point onwards.

If we suffer the indignity of the wooden spoon, I would love nothing more than to steal the ill-gotten Hogan from the Dees in the PSD.

PSD next year? :(

Some foaming at the mouth types venting about the northern Academies on the main BF board. I can't believe how narrow sighted and self centred these ******s are. After what happened to you guys last year, I hope your Academy really does deliver some home grown gems for you.

Thanks for your post over there by the way. A massive injection of perspective from a supporter of a non-academy team. :thumbsu:

If our academy kids are good enough we will have to pay for them accordingly with the appropriate draft pick so I don't understand the overall fuss. It's not like up here we're
breeding top flight athletes with intuitive football brains. D Beams was the last Qlder drafted to really make an impact and he went in the twenties. 17 other clubs will certainly keep us honest.

To give further insight I moved up here as a kid 30yrs ago and the same stigma that is associated to AFL I copped back then I still see. Couple of League playing boys turned their noses up and didn't do P.E. last week when they had to do Aussie Rules and they're in yr 6.

Vics just dont understand the environment up here. Dont understand just how little the majority of people up here give a crap about AFL. This is a development program, and any good players we will have to pay for. We dont get them for free, and we do all the development.

Apparently their big worry is an academy team getting multiple top talents in a draft so they only have to pay second or third rounders for otherwise top picks...

...of course the fact that Qld or NSW having multiple kids drafting in the top 10 has never happened to my knowledge is irrelevant.

I find it ridiculous after so much talk about equalisation that we get one small advantage to make up for all the other disadvantages we have they start having a whinge about it. Lets see what would happen if Victorian teams were forced to have 85% of their list from interstate.

That's not to mention the fact that the academies will help to expand the game which in the long run will help all clubs.

I'd say it's most likely stemming from the speculative top 20 ratings of Hammelmann and Dawson

About time we got something go our way I say!

Very speculative. Conway and Tickner were both highly rated on here and look what happened there.

I know this but some people on BF think KNightmare's power ratings are a direct reflection of AFL recruiters. Even if they were there's a lot of water to go under the bridge yet.
