Teams in non AFL states should have an academy system to help develop the game. They should stay in place until such time that these states can produce the quality and quantity of traditional states. Its primary fuction is to get more kids playing AFL and growing the game at grass roots. The secondary function is to provide frontier clubs with local talent. These academies should also recieve funding from the AFL due to the nature of the primary function.

Outside of the academies, teams in NSW and QLD should recieve extra funding for welfare payments of players. Simple fact is that our lists are made up of talent from other states. These kids (and most of them are kids when drafted) are disadvantaged as they cant visit family and friends as easy as kids staying in Vic can. We should be able to have family brought up or them go home more often to help settle in, and if the club needs to cover that cost, we are at a massive disadvantage compared to traditional state teams.

Yes this is true. In saying that I think Dawson and Hammelmann have a lot more runs on the board at the same stage than last years pair.

Didn't Tickner have two years with the AIS? But a poor national championships and injuries cost him. Dawson is a sure thing IMO but if we are confident of getting a KPP with our first pick after all the other KPPs we have drafted in the last 2 years who knows about Hammelmann.

Be stupid to not pick him up if he performs. A lot of people in particular Knightmare rate him as the best of the second lot of KPP in this years draft. Last year he would of been rated a lot higher but because this year has some serious tall talent he isn't rated as high. Doesn't take away the fact that at the present time he is rated around a second round early first round pick. He showed versatility playing in defense for the AIS as well. He also out of all the QLD kids is the one with his head most screwed on and imo the most likely to succeed out of them all.

I don't recall a many glowing reports of Tickner from his time with the academy where we have seen Hammelmann and Dawson named in the best and given good raps from their time with this group. Both performed very well under-age also with Dawson named AA. Not saying they sure things but they look more likely.

Dawson also shared the medal for best div 2 U18 player in the nationals with kolojazzyknees and nankervis. Pretty great achievement as an underager

Dawson's (reportedly) good infield kicking and HFF/HBF versatility seems to fit nicely with what Leppa is asking for. To me, he seems like a lock (famous last words).

Hammelmann also seems like a great prospect. My one nagging doubt is that we're probably in line to draft one of those top end talls and our depth is already pretty heavy on project talls. Still, I could imagine Hammelmann and Wright (as a ruck forward) being a great pairing if it worked out that way, and Ham seems to have a lot going in his favour so I really hope it works out.

I think if you look at the list and it needs what we really need is a KPF seeing as Lisle has been thrown down back its as if his chances of vying for the forward role are gone. So really we only have Paine, Close, freeman and Brown as our KPF options. That isn't a lot and they are all really young, I don't think taking a KPF with our first pick and hammelman will throw out our list balance at all.

Agree. Dare say brown and maguire as KPP will probably not play beyond this season and Staker could be in doubt with all his injury concerns as well. As you say Lisle may now be pegged as a backman or even delisted. Even Merret and Patfull are both around the 30 mark. So it's not like we have a huge amount of depth in this area.

The other important thing is quality. While we are all hopeful of Paine, Close & Freeman making the top grade non are guarantees by any stretch. If we can get any real top end talent in this position we have to take it.

That's fair enough, I probably put my point more firmly than I meant it. I agree that we're in direst need of at least one more frontline KPF option. I was operating on the assumption we would get at least 1-2 more years out of Staker, McGuane and Merrett, and unsure how to class Martin.

Having said that, I'm also not sure that we have abundant quality midfield depth either. Surely our first pick will be a KPF (which is likely to be best available), but I would estimate Hammelmann's fate depends on best available after that. He seems too highly rated to slip through to the rookie draft, so we'd have to commit seriously.

For what it's worth, I would much prefer that we took Hammelmann at this stage, both on his playing merits and to encourage the academy along. I'm just not as sure that he is a certainty.

With Mitch Clark now off Melbourne's list and payments not being used for the 2015 cap does this mean if he gets his life together he is able to enter the PSD at the end of this year and potentially end up at a WA club?

In theory, and according to the letter of the law, yes he could. It would be very unlikely though, and it's possible the AFL could get involved and claim it's draft tampering or bringing the AFL into disrepute or one of the many very grey offences they can apply to people, and so ban him from it.

dlanod hits the nail on the head. Could also open up a whole new can of worms with loopholes being created. Imagine if Rich retires at the end if the year stating his body couldn't stand up to AFL level after his injury then goes back home and gets picked up by WA club.

Well if we want a relevant example, Mal Michael would be staring us in the face.
Yeah, fair enough.

I couldn't see the AFL doing anything if Clark said he was ready to return to football. They're petrified of controversy and headlines along the lines of 'AFL attempts to block Clark's brave comeback from mental illness' are things they generally steer well clear of.

It's impossible to 100% ascertain what a person is thinking / feeling mentally, so they'd have no leg to stand on. Perhaps he misses Brisbane more than he thought he would ;)

McCartin kicked 8 in a school game. Not sure of the strength of the comp or opposing side. Maybe some of the Vic based people on here would be able to give us some information.

McCartin fits our needs to a tee and lookin forward to seeing how he goes in the nationals. I'm not an expert but I think there are a few in front of him. Goddard, Wright and Durdin. It would be interesting to see where most clubs place him and if he was possibly mid range if the lions had the gumption to try to move down a few places to say, 2nd, 3rd or 4th and still pick up McCartin and another possible first round pick or player. Long way to go but just a scenario to throw up.

The APS competition is a reasonable standard, lots of AFL players played in it when they were younger. It's most of the 'big' Melbourne urban schools. Carey aren't a great team but it's still great for McCartin to be kicking bags like that!

Durdin will be playing in the Foxtel Cup tonight apparently for those who want to watch (and have Foxtel).

On free agents it is worth noting that Jessie Hogan remains unsigned with Melb beyond next year. He has stress fractures in his back atm but personally I still throw a heap of money at him and try and get him. The kid is a massive talent and would sort our forward problems out better than anyone. I would rather have Hogan than Patton every day of the week.

Demons would surely be able to match our offer? Clark quitting leaves a big hole in their salary cap...worth a crack still
