Looking at the highlights of our new kids on the Lions website and McGrath looks a goer, Andrews boy can he take a mark. No instant players like last year but we could unearth a gem or two from this lot in a few years time.

I think bringing in Clayton made Crisp a bit more expendable. Was regarded highly at the Lions but an almost like for like replacement tipped it over the edge imo.
Definitely. I thought this a few months ago. Granted, Clayton has not yet to play a game at the elite level but they certainly seem like-for-like.

I really rated Crisp and would have loved for him to still be on our list but considering the depth of our midfield, especially with the additions of Beams, Christensen and even Robertson it was going to take quite a bit for him to get consistent games. Best of luck to him at Collingwood.

Don't like to disagree, but I see Clayton as more of a mobile forward who can take a mark and kicks well. Crisp was definitely a mid/wing and his marking and kicking weren't strengths.

Are there 3 Cat B spots available on the rookie list? If that was the case, wouldn't Bourke, Archie and Cian take up those three spots?
That could mean we'd need to take some academy players from the rest of the draft pool, like we did with Conway last year. I wouldn't be surprised to see us take Hammelman with pick 4 in the rookie draft tomorrow.

That's what I'm not sure about; whether academy players are allowed to be taken as category A rookies like how F/S are allowed to be. If we didn't in fact nominate Hammelman, I suspect you might be right as we've filled our category B slots.

Well seeing how she almost nailed the top 20 of the draft would probably mean she's right. Still hoping for Jackson as well.

I think we'll pass on Hammer. Keitel is someone who I would certainly rate ahead of him. Not sure why but I think Hammer will end up at Essendon.

Would be surprised Cotter. Seems to be generally accepted all over the grapevine that we are taking Hammer. Can just about lock him in.

The phrasing in Emma's article does make it sound like we have officially prelisted him:

Essendon has pre-listed Jake Long as a father-son rookie, while Sydney and Brisbane will add academy players Jordan Foote and Matt Hammelmann to their rookie lists.

It's pretty evident that the clubs open up to EQ in ways they don't with many others. If she says he is coming to us, reckon she's right. But if that's the case, and we haven't pre-listed him, it must be with our first pick, otherwise Essendon or somebody else could nab him.

EDIT: didn't see your post dlanod

If it isn't prelisting it could also be with one of our zone picks, as those happen before the rookie draft but there's no reason it wouldn't be prelisting if that was the plan.

And if so, that means it will be as the last selection (Pick 56) ....... so no reason why we could not take Keitel as well (so long as he isn't taken in the first 3 picks).
Can play at both ends of the ground.

For mine, I'm looking at Beasley/Capiron/Castagna/Hardisty for Pick 4 - one of these has to be available at that Pick.

For the second Pick (#22), any of the above not taken, if gone, then Coulson/Keitel/Palfrey/Jackson.

I have a funny feeling we won't be using our 3rd Pick (#39) (unless we take a mature-Age Rookie), but if we do, then outside those above, Buykx-Smith/Blood/Mattingley may be available.

For me it would be:

Pick 4 - Glenn
Pick 22 - Bampton (unlikely to be available I think) or Panos
Pick 39 - Kristelly or Uebergang

Don't mind Buykx-Smith although I think we are stocked up on that type now.

I can see Dawson playing 10-15 games next season :footy:

Seems like a few clubs will be taking rookie ruckmen. I think we need another ruck - I assume the better options will be gone by the time of our later picks.

That we didn't hold a senior list spot over for preseason upgrades must mean that we rated each of our new draftees a fair bit higher than the position we took them at. Considering there was talk that we might only use one live pick, maybe we have filled our list already - we don't usually use all our rookie slots... Hammelman probably the exception of course. Maybe we will take one more rookie but I don't see us going for more than that.
