Dawson played at my junior club before heading to the Hornets. High flyer who loves to take marks, wasn't the most athletic but has a decent footy brain and is a hard worker. At the time I saw some AFL potential but I guess going to the Hornets accelerated his development with decent coaches and facilities. He was a forward that played midfield as well. Reminds me a bit of a high flying Karnezis from memory but I haven't seen him play since he left the Tigers and I'm guessing he has been trained to a different position at the Hornets.

Acquited himself well in the limited runs he had with the Reserves in the NEAFL this year, even though giving away considerably in age and strength (as you would expect).
My recollections are that he looked every bit as competent as Conway, at that level (at that stage of the season - pre u/18 Champs).
I was not surprised when, later, he was Qld's best for the Champs, but AA was not expected as a "bottom ager"........(but I was noticed grinning from ear to ear and rubbing my hands together afterwards......and heard to be mumbling something about too soon for Eddie to put a stop to him being an Academy selection.......)

Talls out of contract after 2014 - Martin? (may be 2015), Brown, Lisle, Paparone, Close, Maguire

Pretty sure Martin is contracted until the end of 2014. Doesn't really bother me if he is locked in until 2015. He is a serviceable ruck, a position we lack depth in. Brown and Maguire will probably retire. Michael and Bourke might also be out of contract, they are rookies though.

We've taken some good KPD's and 2014 is the time where we should load up on KPF's.

What I like about Martin is that generally he keeps his feet quite well. He'll leap at a mark and probably not take it, but he'll be the first to it with a second effort ... hopefully he'll become better at dishing it off and his goal kicking ... he could be quite useful.

I think he already is useful, to a degree.

He may not be the best forward/ruck around, but he isn't exactly as bad as some say. He had some injury troubles this year.

I was thinking he could be moved down back, pretty sure he spent some time down there when he was at Melbourne. But that seems unlikely now.

Reading some comments about Martin it all sounds too familiar. I work with a few Melbourne supporters and what some of you are saying is what they've been saying about him the last 5 years. Unfortunately he doesn't have a football brain, he can't mark, can't kick and the position where he plays his best football we have Leuey. He shows glimpses here and there but he'll never do it consistently to be a valuable player for us. West will take his spot next year and unless we have any injuries he won't get a game.

I believe that our list will be in quite a mode of transition and after looking at our list I've identified what will be our main areas if need within three years.

Inside Mids
Raines (27) 30
Rockliff (23) 26
Redden (23) 26
Beams (22) 25
Hayes (19) 22 (Forward/Midfielder)-Rookie

Key/Medium Forwards
Lisle (23) 26
Paine (20) 23
Close (19) 22
Freeman (18) 21

I believe that these two areas are our greatest concern. Small backs is another but using our top pick in 2014 on this area would raise a few eyebrows especially within a draft strong in KPF's, Clem Smith looks a beauty and was one of WA's best as an under age player. I would be hoping that we will take a KPF if they're highly rated. Patrick McCartin as a true full forward, would like two to three cms growth, and also Peter Wright who is a giant at over 200cms. Obviously more names will come up as it is so far out but these two are likely prospects at our first pick. Hugh Goddard also is another but as someone who can play both ends like Harry Taylor can I think with having some young depth in the backline now I would rather a true natural forward at this stage.

I think West is also definitely ahead in terms of preferences for the 22. Those glimpses that Martin shows indicate to me that he's not bad as a depth player.

I'd really like to see Michael get some more games next year instead of Martin (if we have injuries) Think he was really starting to come on late last year. His best game for the year was against the Cats, didn't look out of place at all.

Yeah Michael had a good game against the Cats ... he's coming along pretty well. He hasn't been dominating in the NEAFL or anything but the end of his year was definitely better than the start.

Agree with the key forwards, except that we don't really need depth in that area, we need an elite talent at our first pick. We have enough reasonable project players but one gun would be ideal.

As for inside mids I think that is pretty well covered, as long as Robertson or Conway show something, which I think they will.

Have to agree with the notion of a future 'elite' forward. We might already have one but who knows. I believe that there will be a few more to add to list of potential talls that will bop up in the nationals next year.

Jake Lever will be getting a knee reconstruction. Was looking like a top 5 pick.

Massive slider. Collingwood have done well to get him with pick 12.

Mitch Thorp has signed with Glenelg for next year. Anybody want to start the bandwagon again?

You'd have think at least a couple of clubs told him to move to a stronger league to be any shot in the draft

One day in November 2014:

"Selection 1, Brisbane Lions..."

Peter Wright, forward, from the Calder Cannons Footy Factory.

I have no idea with these kids, but let's say Patton was interested in coming to the Lions and GWS would accept our first pick, would you do it or are some of these kids being bandied about not worth giving it up?

Yeah would take Patton. The 3 years of footy under his belt would be perfect for our list profile rather than starting from scratch.

Even pick 1?? I have not seen a lot of Patton but he is a big unit.

Depends if we get a top 4 pick and can secure one of them. I would probably prefer to draft a youngster but I would love to have Patton on our list.
