I don't believe that local Qld senior footy elevates young blokes into draft calculations but it can help to frank underaged form. I remember Tippett showing good signs at the carnival before competing really well against men in the AFLQ.

I reckon Hammelman, in particular, has a lot to gain from showing he can play well against men.

My one minor nagging worry is the Vic Metro thing. I know you have to back yourself to keep players and take the best available, but they seem to be the hardest to keep. That would be a dagger.

I was thinking along the same lines, Vic country seems to be a safer bet but maybe we have turned a corner and will be able to keep the kids going forward.

I think we have to back ourselves with a KPF draftee. End of the day, McCartin or Wright (assume we get either one) will be a part of a young up coming team, and they will be the focal point in attack. That has to talk to a young forward surely. Outside of that, plenty of room in the cap for future contracts and probably one on one coaching and mentoring with one J Brown.

We have been stung with high picks on rucks, ruck/forwards before. Please don't do it again.

We need a KPF, so draft or trade for one. McCartin looks very good, we may not get him, I liked the look of Goddard also from Vic Country. I would be hesitant to use high picks on Vic Metro kids after the go home 5.

Yep...Some are suggesting there may be a few influencing Victorian factors with Goddard...(surrounding the club he trained with a in the off season) as he hasn't produced the goods in under 18 carnival... The suggestion is he may slide well down the draft order to their pick..

I thought if they weren't bid on by any other club then we just got first rights to them as Rookies and no one else could get them?

We have to nominate which of our academy players we want to take in the draft. Those nominated players are then put up for the bidding process, if no other bids than we take them with our last picks. The non nominated academy players enter the draft like any other player and can be taken by anyone. Any left over academy kids not taken in the draft, we can take as rookies.

We still have to nominate academy players we want to prelist as rookies - we just nominate them as such, rather than for the national draft. If they get through the ND and PSD, they go straight on to our rookie list. There's not really any benefit to doing so though (for any of the academy clubs) because it tips your hand, whereas we all have the rookie zone picks still that can be used on any local. The sole exception is if we thought GC would poach a player as a rookie and they finished lower than us - very very edge case.

I have hopes that Hammelmann might turn into a defender if he doesnt grab a forward spot. I like Close and think he will take one of our forward positions, along with our first pick this year. That leaves maybe 1 spot for another ruck forward martin or west playing 3 talls.

Hammelmann might be good as a defender.

If Hammelmann can improve his set shot technique, I think he'll be our full forward within 2 seasons. A tick under 2 metres, can mark well on the lead and gets separation from defenders with good footy smarts. Is pretty good below the knees and his second efforts are there, just doesn't have the strength/stamina to execute them properly yet.

An extra 10kg and a couple of pre-seasons of AFL level training will do him wonders.

If we can get him for a 3rd rounder or later it'll be a steal :thumbsu:

From second hand accounts, I understand he's pretty quick for his size over 20m as well.

I think we have all been spoilt by Brown coming in at 18-19 and being able to take a game by the scruff of the neck.

I think we have to temper expectations on some of these kids. Even our highest pick might take 3-4 years to mature.

No way. I am going to build this kid up to be the next Wayne Carey and then calling for his delisting within 2 years. Inflated Expectations -> Hysterical Analysis -> Knee Jerk Responses. That's the way to do things.

You don't happen to work in change management for the government do you?

Yeah it's going to be ****ing cringeworthy on here if we take a tall and they haven't won a Coleman by age 21.

We already have people here who feel compelled to post every time Polec touches the ball - but at least he was a former player.

Have a feeling that we are going to hear plenty about whoever we don't take out of McCartin or Wright (or both) as they develop.
