For the Brisbane Lions, 196cm Academy player Matt Hammelmann is making good progress, and was used in defence and attack through the Europe camp and competed well. He's a steady kick and has sure hands, much like other Lions Academy player Liam Dawson, who plays mainly in defence.

From the above article.

It sounds like there are some great talls but I haven't really read anything about any of them that really interests me. Wonder how Mitch Thorp will go this year. From the little I've seen of his SANFL highlights he looks like an amazing athlete.

And knowing our luck, the compensation pick will be scrapped the year it would be applicable to the Lions.

If they were fair, they'd phase it out rather than just scrapping it completely.

i.e. from 2015 onwards, if a club has already been compensated for the loss of a free agent in the past, they don't get any more. From there on out, every other club is entitled to compensation for the loss of their first free agent and then they're done too.

The AFL isn't fair though. So it won't happen.

Melbourne will make a mockery of the rules this year by cashing out Frawley for a top 3 pick, and will not only benefit from AFL welfare again, but will also result in the system being scrapped for every other club.

I do hope we don't get the number 1 pick. I think anywhere from 3-6 should get us a top end KPF talent as well as not losing every game which will be good for us commonly fickle fair weathered QLD supporter base
Finishing last could set us up for a sustained period of success. Over the next couple years we will develop quality and depth in defence, mids and ruck. But our kpf stocks are scary bad. If we are to be any hope of competing with the likes of gold coast, gws, essendon etc in 2016 we need to nail the best kpf in the draft and we need him pretty much ready to go. A recycled c grade tall or a skinny kid wont cut it. Wright is the man for us. Tall, strong, great endurance, great speed, good mark, quality kick and most importantly can play the damn game.

Make no mistake he will go at number 1. KPFs will tend to go early moving forward. They are just too important. You need about 8 quality mids these days to compete but a single key forward can make or break the team.

It sounds weird to say but we have a real hope of finishing last now with our injuries and melbourne beating carlton last week. Our game Vs the dees might be kreuzer cup mk II. Actually think we'll be out of sight by then but you never know. Melb will surely try and finish last though. They'd stand to gain picks 1 and 2 (through offloading frawley) and pick 19 and 20 (priority pick)

I understand the AFL are stingy when handing out priority picks now but if we were, god forbid, to go without winning a game then we would be handed a priority pick at least at the end of the first round.

I wouldn't be worried about Melbourne getting picks 1 & 2. History shows they tend to stuff their picks.

If god forbid we do come last, the other interesting aspect could be having pick one in the PSD and a large chunk of cap space.

I know it's very, very rare that clubs go the full poach via the PSD but after the way clubs lined up to feast on our suffering last year, I wouldn't be disappointed if we did the dirty on someone else for a change.

As an aside, former Lions supporter Ben Cunnington is both in seriously good form, and out of contract. ;)

If his form holds he is worth 600k plus a year.

yeah bit those picks will be tall forwards which we need. They have stuffed up so many players, if l was a draftee l would not be playing 100% just in case they get drafted to melbourne.

I hope we get Bryce Gibbs & James Frawley through free agency and draft Peter Wright as a KPF. With any luck this is what our best 22 would look like:

B: Harwood, Merrett, Patfull
HB: Adcock, Frawley, Golby
C:Hanley, Gibbs, Rich
FOL: Leuenberger, Moloney, Redden
HF: Zorko, Brown, Rockliff
F: McGrath, Wright, Staker
INT: Mayes, Green, Lester Sub: Aish

that does look a better lineup tbh, but l would prefer Gibbs in a hbf area, l would swap golby with Gibbs and put Aish in the middle with Taylor as the sub.

But Clarke is our future CHB. doubts we would go after Gibbs if he leaves Carlton it would to go home to Port or Adelaide. Frawley would be good but.

I am not sure about Wright, from what l have read about him, it is saying he is more of a ruckman/forward. Would have thought we were wanting a genuine pure forward?

See what happens in the TAC Cup and U18 champs this year. A lot of questions will be answered.

You'll read a lot of opinions about the draft on BigFooty this year. Everyone's an expert.

when does the Tac Cup and u18 champs happpen? I hope he can become a dominant forward but for us to get him then l think we need to be bottom of the ladder...

I wonder if no real standout tall stands out we would try trading our 1st pick for one of Boyd, Patton, Cameron?

l would love any one of them but l can honestly not see GWS trade them away, that is a future premiership winning forward line.

Include Tomlinson in that forward line.....if they're not getting regular games ...Clubs with room to move in salary will come knocking.
