If Dawson is a halfback flanker with good skills I reckon we would be all over him. Good uses in the back half is something we are needing IMO.

Always handy but with Hanley back there and Cutler that gives us two pretty good ball users and if Harwood ever gets out of the dog house he is not bad either. Personally I think we need someone to shut down small quick small forwards ie someone to assume the role that Yeo had last year. I am not seeing anyone on our list atm who has the speed and agility to do that into the future.

I see a Clem Smith sliding to our second pick (dreamland) with three tough young hombres in Robertson, Gardiner and Smith to create havoc.

A shut down small quick is certainly needed. I remember Golby trying to play that role and getting toweled up. Harwood can play that role on occasions.

I know he hasn't played there before, but I reckon Clay Beams could turn out to be a very handy small defender.

I'd prefer we use other people off half back and play Hanley further forward.

I said that everyone I said the other day Claye would be good down back cause he is proven he can tag or play a shut down role and he is a good user of the ball!!!!!!!!!!!!

I feel your pain, Billy Puller. My favourite posts are the ones when I get to remind people that I was right about something.

Or at least I assume they will be. It's bound to happen eventually.

For a more in-depth explanation:

The best way to think about it is that us and every other club with an academy or father/son pick nominates all those they're interested in.

Then they work their way down the pick order. Whoever has pick 1 is asked if they want to bid it on someone and if so, who. If they don't, then pick 2, then pick 3, etc, until someone says they want to bid on player X.

We then get to choose whether to spend our next draft pick to take that player or not. If we don't, player X is heading to the team that bid on them for that pick. If we do, player X is heading to us for our next pick and the team that bid on them gets to bid on another player with that pick if they want to.

In the case where we have more than one nomination, that next pick in the last paragraph is the next currently unused pick. So if two nominated players get bid on between our first and second picks, we could take one with our second pick and then another with our third, and so on for more players.

And if no one bids for them we pick them up for our picks in reverse order?

In terms of their pay - since first rounders get paid more than second rounders etc - do they get paid based on the round they were bid on or the round they were taken in (eg X bid for pick 8, we end up taking for pick 80 due to the plethora of Qld talent - do they get paid like an 8 or like an 80?)

Yes. In that case they don't get assigned to actual picks. Instead they just take up whatever ends up being our last X picks on draft day based off how many list spots we have available.

I'm pretty sure they get paid according to the pick they actually get taken, but I can't find the source document.

Edit: Found the latest player rules, and there's nothing in there about getting paid according to anything other than the draft pick used.

That's kinda shitty for the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th Riewoldt caliber player we steal in every draft then!
