The 2009 CBA (the current is probably similar) has a 10%ish boost for first rounders over second rounders, and about a 5%ish boost for second rounders over the rest. So it's a few thousand dollars for someone like Dawson being nominated with a first round pick but gets taken with our second, for example.

Did anyone catch any of the NFL draft? I saw some highlights on one of the US morning shows - and it puts the academy awards to shame. And it's spread over a couple of nights. Very interesting - especially the drafting of the first openly gay player.

It is brilliant. The AFL could learn a lot from the NFL.

I'm a huge fan of the NFL draft but I don't think that format could work with the AFL.

The NFL draft can have that sort of spectacle because it comes off the back of the absolutely huge NCAA college football scene that feeds into the NFL.

The AFL pathway of 18 year old kids coming from state junior feeder competitions just doesn't provide that same excitement for the average punter.

It's a nice dream but not a realistic one.

Pretty much. People in the US actually know who the top prospects are. You get dramas like 'who will draft Johnny Football?'(such a shame it wasn't Dallas) and stories like Michael Sam. Plus there are the draft day trades and whatnot. It's not the same with a bunch of guys no one's heard of who are just out of high school.

I think the draft day trades are a huge part of it. Five minutes or more per pick, depending on the round, to facilitate those trades. Would just be incredibly boring for the AFL.

Yep, agree. Think the NFL broadcast is different but you'd need the TAC Cup to be shown at least on Pay TV as a proper competition for it to have the same effect.

The AFL does its best each year to pump up the draftees, create some interest and I think they have done a good job at that. Anyone half interested knows a couple of names, even if most people havent even seen them play. Wont ever reach the hieghts of NFL simply because these are still kids at the end of the day.

I think you are right but the AFL can still improve the draft night coverage IMO.

Watched McCartin last year as an underager playing for in the un18 champs. Based on what he did, I reckon he would have gone top 15 last year. I would be happy to take him with our 1st round pick.

We are all over Dawson, he is a lock, pencil him in rd 1 senior team 2015.

The earlier discussion on Dempsey is very interesting. He is definitely someone we should look to get in, as long as his psych testing is okay. He is the perfect go home thing we are looking for, think J.POLEC! ha

From the Knighmare draft thread :thumbsu:

Liam Dawson (Brisbane Academy - QLD – Util)
Height: 188m, Weight: 83kg, DOB: 23/01/1996
Recruited from: Aspley
Style: Sam Gilbert (without the kicking issues)
Player comparison:
Range: 2nd round/3rd round
Profile: Dawson has already proven his value with his play through the u18 champs last year churning out a number of strong performances. Dawson has the ability to play back, forward or through the midfield. He’s a nice user of the ball by hand and foot and has a penetrating 55m kick on him. Strong tackler. As a defender Dawson is an elite interceptor and has a good feel for when to leave his man for the intercept mark also understanding where the drop of the ball will be. As a forward he’s a solid marking target who could off a forward flank be a factor. And through the midfield he’s shown the ability to accumulate the footy. Dawson is a relatively early bloomer and with his game relatively advanced already it’s not beyond him to receive games from season one.

Matthew Hammelmann (Brisbane Academy - QLD – KPF/KPD)
Height: 198cm, Weight: 88kg, DOB: 08/03/1996
Recruited from: Morningside
Style:
Player comparison:
Range: 2nd round/3rd round
Profile: Hammelmann is a strong marking key forward who is particularly effective on the lead but also has some 1v1 marking ability. For his height he’s got excellent ability below his knees with his ability to pick up the ball cleanly. He’s also a really nice user of the footy and is a reliable set shot kick at goal. He’s also played well down back at times and hasn’t looked out of place. He’s not as dominant as some of the high end key position players but there is still something here to work with and once his body fills out he could be a really exciting key forward.

Currently he has Hammelmann rated @ 14 and Dawson @ 16 :thumbsu:

Also lists their range as 2nd round/3rd round.

Knightmare does his homework but is hit and miss like most punters.

He often updates his first page (rankings), but usually keeps profiles the same until later in the year. 2nd/3rd round may be what we're going to have to give up to get them as they are obviously Academy kids.

Dawson does sound good though :footy:

Having those two locked with our second and third picks would make me tempted to trade our first pick if someone like Beams or Fyfe was available.

We would still need a power forward ho. Hammelman is unknown yet (as is Wright), however l would have more faith that a number 1 KPF is a higher chance of being a star than a 2nd/3rd round kpf.

Yeah I would still want that top 3 key forward as well. It certainly doesnt hurt having freeman and hammelman as developing key forwards though, especially at their size. Hammelman would have to do something pretty special this year to make us take our eye off a KPF with our first pick. Upside is, even if a freeman or hammelman turn out ok, and cant get a spot in our team due to drafting a kpf with our first pick this year, trade value with tallsis pretty good, we would likely get more back in trade than what we pay for them.

Speaking with GOD at the coaches club function, the club seems all but certain dawson will get drafted, so they are expecting to have to bid for him. Not as sure about hammelman.

To clarify, do you mean they didn't seem as sure about whether we would draft Hammelmann, or whether somebody else would nominate him?

That would create an interesting situation. Trade away our first chance at a potentially elite key forward for a matured elite/near elite midfielder.

I'd do it. Beams for a top 5 pick sounds right to me.

I'm just afraid of a Watts/Koschitzke situation as opposed to investing time in developing Paine, Close, Michael, Paperone, Lisle, Hammelmann, Freeman, etc. Plus it's not like we've had it easy hanging onto first round picks.

I doubt we'd get much but at least put it on offer similar to what Melbourne did. Backed up with our space in the salary cap who knows.

I'm the last two games for Qld Vs TAC Cup teams Hammelman hasn't done too much. Believe he was played back in the last game. Uebergang I reckon will be like Freeman from last year and be picked up in later rounds. Not highlighted as Dawson and Hammelman are but has done well up forward and hopefully this continues.

On Dawson, with where currently stand it would take a team to use their first round pick to force us to use our second. Looking at that I think we will be able to use our third rounder for him. This will allow us to use our second rounder on another player or possible trade bringing more talent depth in to the team.
