When was the last time a number one pick didn't play a game due to an ACL?

1801 town v country

Seriously, just thought it was a bit out there, these guys rating the QLD boys so highly before the season got under way.

I agree with the thoughts of most here that pacey skilled mid with our 2nd pick would be a good result for us with one of those highly rated KPF as our first selection and hopefully Dawson and Hammelmann being our 3rd & 4th round selections.

What players with these attributes would be available around this pick, and rated worthy of selection? Pickett sounds like he certainly fit the bill but should be long gone.

If welller falls maybe, Can't see him going past the Gold Coast though he is damn good would love to have him on the team.

Yeah I was thinking Weller sounds like a good all-round mid but does he have line breaking pace?

Nah he doesn't. He's real neat and tidy, but like Amish I reckon. Classy user of the footy

Aish**** **** auto correct

I believe the Amish are also neat and tidy.

Not sure how they go with the footy though.

Their beards get sweaty which is a bit of a nuisance, but it is the buggy that does the real damage to the playing surface.

Pretty sure they aren't allowed to go far from their clan for any prolonged period of time. Therefore Karnezis alarm bells should be ringing before we draft young Jeremiah...

How long does it take a horse and buggy to get to Springfield?
Looking at it from the wrong angle TBD - It will take them a hell of a lot longer to get away from Springfield. ;)

In regards to our second pick I personally would go with Clem Smith if he is still there. He is talked about as a first round pick but I can see him slide purely due to his position that he plays, height and his kicking can be questionable. It is also not that out of reach for our second as it will be early at 21,22. As much as I think the KPF is a need the need to develop our backline is just as important. The better teams that play have a very good back six and the small defender is a need of ours. If I look at what we currently have and say in two to three years we currently have some very good building blocks there. I added Dawson already as GOD has confirmed in part to others here that the club is going to take him. McStay I think is being developed as a rebounding defender in part as from what I have read isn't a true KPD. Gardiner could play fullback but I think he can play the third type role like Patfull does now. Currently we have the makings of a good backline and Smith is a need. Plus he's hard, tough and fast what's not to like.

B: Gardiner, FB (need), Small Def (need)
HB: Dawson, Clarke, McStay

I'd pass on Clem Smith. I think speed and skill is they way to go in this draft. Smith isn't the best of kicks and we already have 3 guys under 180cm.

Someone like Nelson who I think is a chance to be at our second pick so far this year would be a better option.

Ok, cool. Would Nelson be outside mid or rebounding defender?

My reasoning on Smith is also we usually get torn a new one by opposition small forwards. It would be nice to go some way forward solving that.

I'd say he'd be more valuable to us as a rebounding defender that would finally allow Hanley to make a permanent midfield move. Nelson's kicking almost looks like it has regressed this year though. Whether that is bad form or not, I don't know. So I'd keep an eye on it.

I certainly agree with small forward tearing us up. I think someone like Aaron Heppell from the VFL is worth a look in at that shutdown role and is only 19. Could play straight away similar to how Langdon has this year.

Definitely agree that we need a shutdown small and definitely reckon that state league is the way to go with it. More developed bodies, game sense in a more senior environment. There'd be a few candidates around, I think Heppell is a decent call actually.

Although I've been impressed with what Port have done with the likes of Impey.

I would have thought that a genuine small forward with X-factor would be a need but to be honest Green is coming along so well that he could become that player.

With Golby on the outer and Adcock entering his twilight years, along with the loss of Doc and Yeo we do need someone who can do a shut down role. I think we will be looking more towards a Yeo type than a traditional small lockdown type. Someone taller with some pace, but able to lock down role. Offensive abilities to run off those smaller types as well, often the best way to help negate those sneaky smalls is to make sure you keep them accountable.

TBH, I can see Leppa keeping Hanley down back. Just need to free up Rich with a more running type player and get him back in the middle.

Agree this is a need but not nowhere near our main priority. I think an early 2nd rounder is too high a pick to burn on a defensive minded small, unless of course they happen to have offensive class also.

This is probably a need that can be rectified with a later pick used on a mature aged state league body as PTizzle says.

Glad to hear that others here think the same that I in regards to a small defender. For those in the know in regards to Dawson does he have rebounding defender requirements? Also where does McStay fit in then? Out of this years crop who would be the rebounding defender that we need with skill and pace?

I think that we are a tad gun shy when it comes to state leagues which frustrates me no end. I remember when Ballyntyne (spelling?) was playng WAFL and was keen for us to get him.

Hanley is a much better player when he spends less time at half back.

Not sure I agree. I have always thought he was a better player being attacking the ball and the player from the half back line. For a comparison think of Hodge.

I think he becomes quite a bit more risk averse when he plays across the backline. Quite a few more 30m chips to players in space and a few less line-breaking runs into the forwardline.

Possibly that goes without saying.

Anyway, I reckon the really damaging players like Hanley, Rich and Mayes should be in positions where they can take the game on a bit more. While it's important to have good users of the ball in the backline it shouldn't be as hard as it has been to find players who can consistently find targets in that part of the ground without shifting our more dangerous players down there.

I think Leppitsch might have felt he was forced into it by the inconsistency of some of our defenders, particularly Golby. And for a bunch of reasons it seems he doesn't rate Harwood to play that role off the back flank.

Heppell has been going well in the VFL this year and deserves a chance.

I think a genuine small forward is still a need for what it's worth. But I think I'd rather look for one late in the national draft or rookie draft.
