Mayes and Paparone are two I think who could swap between that role and out onto the wing.

Nice to see Paparone get three shots on goal on the weekend. Definitely something I would like to see him improve on.

Interesting that no-one has really stood up in the Champs games so far and stamped themselves as a top of the draft type. Lamb is one who I thought would really establish himself as a top 5 type has shown very little and belted someone on the weekend and is likely to get an enforced rest. Wright has done a few things but not what you would expect from a very high pick. McCartin was rested this week.

Even the smalls are swapping around with good and ordinary games. At the moment I am not sure anyone deserves a particularly high pick.

Yeah, they could - definitely.

I guess the question is whether Leppa sees them as part of the midfield or forward line long term. With Paparone, he spends a lot of time with the midfield cohort.

On Mayes, I can't work out what Leppa wants from him just yet. Last game, he seemed to play a few different roles depending on the circumstances. Long term, I have him pegged in the midfield, changing forward but that is a personal view rather than any real understanding of what Leppa is planning.

That's a really good point. The next step in his game is to learn when to drift forward into dangerous positions. It's one thing to learn running patterns by rote but it's another to develop instincts and a feel for the flow of the play at this level.

I reckon Mayes might already have some of those instincts. He's not really playing a role where he can use them, though.

I think Papa's next step is to pay the slightest bit of attention to his opponent.

Looked like he was playing on Dale Thomas, and from my perspective, had the better of him.

I thought apart from when he came back on in the first after that big hit he was playing on the wing and Mayes was on Thomas for a lot of the game.

Quite possibly. I normally scan the matchups in the first 5-10 mins then start paying less attention.

Not including the old fella, Mayes is by some distance the best and most natural forward on our list.

You notice Green when he has shots on goal, by gee i've never seen a player get front and center so often in a Lions jumper for a decade. You watch some of the games where he doesn't get the ball, he is dead front center, just keeps getting there. I like that he is getting some midfield time, but it's hard to keep someone away from the forward line when they can create shots on goal like Greeny.

Mayes i think will be that real tradition HF/Mid type. Will spend some time in the mid rotations, and coming in off the front or side of the square, but i think the biggest chunk of his time around the wing/HF. He is pretty good at setting up goals, finding space and can finish off with a goal if he gets on the end of it. I think ideally he would be a HF averaging 20 touches a game, probably 1.5 goals a game and 2 or 3 goal assists.

On Paps, from what i've gather through interviews and bits and bobs throughout the year, his job on the wing is to basically protect the fat side against a switch and the team breaking into space across field. He doesn't seem to get a direct opponent, his #1 priority is just to just slow the ball up. Often teams will work hard and create an overlap, and he leaves his opponent on the wing to put pressure on the ball carrier. This often results in the ball going over his head to his former opponent, but that is his role in the setup. Occupy space, put teams off from doing damage when switching the play.

Early in the year i know, but interested in your thoughts on what types of players we should be drafting this year Quig, and if you think the talent is there in this class to get those types. We all know about a KPF with our first pick, so outside of that, what player types do you feel we need, and who are the likely types you'd hope might be around our next few picks.

I'd also be interested in this Quigley, hard to get many names that people would recommend for us as a smaller type available around our 2nd round pick.

It's well known that we need a FF but if we end up with - for eg pick 3 - when does best available trump needs? Both McCartin and Wright are gone & the remaining KPPs aren't as highly rated as the best mid. Do we go best available and take the mid?

We might if we have our teeth into drafting an established KPF

I think we go big in the first round. Talent is not as high as most years at the top but the best of it are the bigs. Pick whichever they like the best and go with it. Mids are pretty ordinary this year I think. Some decent small defenders so if we wanted to go that route we could do alright.

I am still hoping Dawson steps up and is well worth the second rounder. As for others I have been fairly quiet given I have not seen much yet. Give me a few weeks and I will be a bit more vocal.

Does anyone have more thoughts on Dawson? Much of what I read has him being capable all over the ground, a real utility type. I managed to watch a quarter the other week where he kicked a nice goal. When I returned to watch the NEAFL game, the gentleman I stood with (former club president) said he had kicked some more goals and looked very good.

Has he played many NEAFL games? Did he play forward or back?

I guess someone who can play everywhere well is a real asset and he may develop into something more specific as he matures. Lets hope he really shows something again at the u18 champs, but maybe not too much so we can get him third or fourth round :)

After the past 2 wins I thought instead of having a forum for pick 1, we should have one for picks 4-6, which we are now likely to end up with (only if we can beat GWS though). There are 4 key position players that will all be likely picked in the top 5 or 6: Sam Durdin, Peter Wright, Patrick McCartin and Hugh Goddard.
Personally for me its out of McCartin and Goddard, as Wright is 203cm and not a natural forward (he's plays 50% of games in the ruck) while Durdin is best suited as a key defender.
But I'd like to know what views other people have towards these 4 players

If we win a few more games, McCartin and Wright should be gone by our pick. Possibly Durdin too though he's more of a defender and personally I don't rate Goddard as a high level KPF that we're really looking for. Id like to go after Tyler Keitel. 194 cm, great hands, agile and shows a bit of x-factor plus a solid kick for goal to boot.

We can't rely on a saviour in the draft even if we got the first pick that player won't be ready immediately or consistently for a number of years (look at Cameron this year). Need this year to get the 3 young talls on our list prepared to play 40 odd games between them next year.

I think we've gotta spend the rest of the year with close, Paine, freeman getting 5 games each (and more to the one or two who show a bit). They might not be ready but brown will surely retire after this year, mcguane and staker are injury prone and third tall size anyway, Merritt is not working as a forward, and paparone is clearly marked to be a midfielder who could conceivably play tall. Lisle is just not good enough and is heading towards being delisted you'd think?

Also looking at age of our key defenders and the size/style of those we drafted last year and I think well need a Merritt/McGuire gorilla replacement from 2016 onwards. So if best available is durdin at our pick then we should get him. Gardiner is more third tall size, mcstay ( from reading of ressies reports) plays smaller than his size, cutler is a tall mid sized player.

My thoughts exactly, thats my worry though, because Lisle and Paine don't look like they are going to be anything impressive, leaving only Close and Freeman. We need a key forward before a backman because Merrett can play back, but as others have said unless there is a freak midfielder pushing those 4 players down we are unlikely to get any of them.
