"The spread is too much. We have too many blokes playing at the top level who aren't top-level players."

I do agree with him on that point though. All 6 of you who read my posts know that I have banged on about the lack of talent we have in general in footy.
Yeah, if only the League had some process in place to try to develop the footy culture in non-traditional states, so that long-term the talent supply would be there...

Archie Smith is a perfect example. No lions Academy, he plays basketball and one less player in the "talent pool". The academies are actively helping to add to the talent pool that Eddie is saying is full of spuds.

When did you get your fifth and sixth ?

If you work a bit harder and get one more, we will be able to field a Netball team.

Race for the Wooden Spoon update:
GWS with their win today now have a win and percentage on us - with a favourable draw compared to us they'll likely increase that advantage too. They'll avoid the spoon.

We're pretty much certain finish in the bottom 2 :( - head to head battle with St. Kilda. They have a much easier draw in the back half of the year too. :/

I can only take what Eddie said face value as presented in the item.
So to add to the general context of Eddies comment if he and others with a fair bit of pull had not got their knickers in a knot at our golden years they would have understood that they were never going to last for ever. We had an ageing team. As much as Sydney COLA etc is up for debate the truth of the matter is that at best it has made them permanently competitive. In all the time they have been in Sydney they have won 2 flags. Now we get some implication that an academy is some unfair advantage. I ask what planet anyone is on with that train of thinking?

One could say the bigger concern is the diluted talent pool for commentators, umpires and administrators of our sport. Players are the least of our problems ATM.

Jesse Hogan next season. Or even this year if we offer Rocky or they accept pick 2 and Aish.

Our retention allowance was ripped away due to the threepeat - bottom line. At the time our management team did not put up a strong fight to retain it. The myth was that it was misused to lure players like Caracella away from the Bombers - which ignored the fact that money earmarked for Des Headland became available when he went home. If ever there was a knee jerk reaction this was it. I am very critical of the club's management during the latter part of the glory days, but the AFL needs to loom at the systemic issue rather than the operational, we were effectively punished for being too good.

A word of caution here - we can bemoan the rise of the GWS & GC, in the eyes of many we are the first incarnation of that monster - it's not correct to hold that view but propaganda by the unsuccessful clubs continues to argue it. Eddie is now rallying the "Victorian" Clubs because of the academy set up. The Saints & Bulldogs have in recent times just exited their "window" with nothing but despair and unrequited love. I would argue that difference between them and say Collingwood was the add ons that the Pies were able to access because of the lofty position they hold. Hawthorn is now experiencing a similar period. No one wants to go to the bottom of the ladder but what was once a 1/12 chance is now 1/18. The big clubs realise where the focus has to be hence the Blues whale offer to Graham Wright.

Please don't be a our next list manager.

I never said we should although I would trade pick 2 and Aish for him. But not Rocky. As long as his back issues won't affect him long term.

Pick 2 I would trade. But not Pick 2 + Aish. It would be borderline not allowed by the AFL because it favours Melbourne that much. Woeful idea.

Are you aware that Hogan hasn't actually played a game yet?

He's won a VFL B &F since we went really hard to get him the first time. I don't think anything has happened to hurt his reputation since Melbourne stole him from us.

I cant see Melbourne/Roos giving up a kid who could be the Pin for their forwardline for the next 12 years.

It would be like Collingwood knocking on our door back in 2000 and offering us a midfielder and pick 1 for Browny.

Interesting that we now have a bit of a dilemma when it comes to KPFs. We have Hammelman and Uebergang available this year(although it is hard to know whether academy types will even go in the national draft). Unless we trade our first pick, you'd assume we'll use it on a key fwd prospect as well. We also picked up Paine and McGuane last year(although both are probably stop gap measures) along with Freeman(too early to tell whether he'll make it). Close has signed a 3 year deal, so you would assume the club is happy with how he's progressing, and we don't know whether Paparone will end up as a key forward or not. Staker was good last year but it's hard to see him getting back from yet another long injury layoff.
What this all means for the future of our fwd line, I have no idea.

I know he's done very well in the VFL, but giving up anything significant for someone who's yet to play a game is foolish for mine.
He could be great, but he could also be the next John Butcher.

Of course, the same could be said of any key forward we draft- but I'd rather hang on to young players who HAVE shown that they have what it takes at AFL level.

The players I've highlighted aren't KPF's. Paine and McGuane are more your third talls and Paparone is a leading HFF.

Whilst it would obviously be nice to have them both fit and firing, we really need one of McGuane or Staker to come in and play well next year.

I agree with Hogan. I rate the kid very highly, but I would not go out and give up Aish and pick 2 for him.
