Reckon we might be getting a fraction carried away with Hammelmann. A couple of years ago we were getting in quite a tizz about Tickner winning an u18 champs game off his own boot as a bottom-ager.

Think we are prone to a bit of Academius Overratius in these parts.

If the ladder finished as it is now, GWS would have picks 5 and 20 (assuming no free agency compensation picks). That isn't enough IMO to do a trade for pick 2 (which we currently have). The Suns would have picks 11 and 15. Again, not enough to do the trade.

However, the fact that those clubs have two picks in the top 20 gives them some flexibility to entertain a trade. Moreover, given the state of their list, they may be more prepared to trade up in the draft order, given youth depth isn't really an issue for them. Of course, the fact that neither club needs a key tall forward balances that out although a midfielder/key defender emerging from the pack might give them some impetus to explore a trade.

Probably more a discussion for the trade thread but I'd think seriously about a 2 for 1 deal. It would need to be for the right picks. I reckon a top 3 pick would be worth something like picks 6 and 12.

I am very concerned about our midfield. Obviously, key forward is the gaping hole but I'm not sure we've got the quality/depth coming through the midfield ranks. When you look at a side like Sydney, they've got probably a dozen blokes who'd be close to a first string midfielder in our side. I think we need one, maybe two, genuine midfield prospects - not wingman, flankers and project types but genuine ball finding mids who can run all day and not butcher the footy.
That depends on whether the opinion of most BF draft watcher(that this draft is weak when it comes to top end midfield talent) is shared by the professionals.

It's certainly possible we systematically overrate the academy, but we're going off a pretty small sample so far. I'm optimistic that we'll get better at developing these kids over time. In any case, I haven't seen anywhere near enough of the players in question to have a first hand opinion. It's just an interesting strategic position to have this (likely) very high draft pick coming out of an era of compromised drafts.

I reckon hammelman will be good but not for a a fair few years. He's a lot stronger than he looks but he is the biggest string bean. When he's around 21-23 and he fills out then he will be good but no way in hell would I trade away our first pick and not get one I wright, durdin and mcartin

Let's currently look at our KPF stocks, true KPF stocks. Close and Freeman and that is it. Personally I would take best KPF be it Wright or McCartin, then also Hammelman and Uebergang. That makes five very young and raw prospects but it's a lot better than two. Look at the Suns and GWS and this is what we will have to do wih this crop. We will have to be patient, some will stand up, some won't and some might find themselves being KPD. KPF is our most concerning need. Mids and attacking HBF will be taken in coming years drafts. IMO of course

Yep. Why trade down when a quality KPF is there for the taking. It's the answer to all our prayers and some want to try and double dip. Unless we are getting a Boyd or similar player I say no!

Was thinking of heading down to Visy this Saturday for the Qld v NT game. Anyone know if the restriction on lenses >200mm is applied to U18 championship matches?

Any and all academy players need to be treated as project players. Even promising ones are usually 1 or 2 years behind in development, so you do really need to be patient with them and expect nothing. Tippett is a good example, it really wasnt until he was a bit older and had been at AFL for awhile that he really came of age.

Stars are aligning for us this year, after missing out on the top KPF in previous years. We would be silly to give up that chance.

That isnt to say we shouldnt entertain trades, but it would need to be a good one. Anyone trading up to one of the first picks this year will do so for a KPP. Saints and us need one, so I cant see either team parting with the pick.

I could see the suns trading both picks for 1 higher one. They have so much talent they can afford the luxury to just get up the order and draft best available.

I'm beginning to hope we trade out our first pick for 2 first rounders and go midfielders with those. We have a few gems hidden away in our academy that might surprise a few in the coming years. Would rather two potentially A graders over 1 potential A grader. It won't matter who we have up forward if our mids are getting smashed every second week. We need class and a line breaking midfielder before we can straighten up our spine.

Hope so too actually. I'd personally take Weller and Kietel over Wright, but that's just my opinion. Would be nice to add those two along with Hammelman and Dawson with our lateish picks.

If we were to trade away pick 2 I think Melbourne has shown us how it's done, Salem & Tyson look to be future stars of their football club. In my opinion players to target would be Tom Mitchell, Lachie Plowman & Kristian Jaksch. I also would like a way to try and get Tim Membrey at the club.

Is pick 2 for Plowman & Jaksch realistic?

Crazy talk, trading an early pick for two later ones. We have a desperate need for a KPF and this draft is our chance to finally get one, mids are everywhere, yes we need a line breaking mid, we have for a while, but we have a greater need for a KPF.

Wouldn't look at trading down this year. Firstly, the key forward talent seems to be there. Secondly, they traditionally take longer to mature so the earlier we get them on board the better - we can address our clearance issues in subsequent years and to be honest, we are not going to be overly competitive for the next few years, so will probably have the opportunity to have the same discussion next year.

Provided your lense is not too big I doubt it would be a problem. I have used my 270mm before and no-one batted an eyelid.

Thanks Quigley. It's a biggie I'm afraid - 300mm f/2.8 on a pod - but think I'll give it a try anyway.

Seems Eddie might be getting a but carried away too. Either that or he reads BF.

Agree with this. We've been waiting years to be in reach of a top KPF talent, this year has strong KPF prospects that line up with our pick. We must get them on board. Give them Brown's number and get the big guy to do a mentor role with them. Would be amazing as a young KPF to have that opportunity.

Mids can have an impact within the first few years, we can focus on that next year with another likely top 5 pick.

Looks like the game is at Windy. Hill. May have been moved. I might head down myself if I can.
