I would be surprised if Gardiner didn't fill that role.

FWIW I would certainly draft Harris Andrews this year. 198cm KPD who moves really nicely for someone that height and seems to have good defensive instincts. I would also probably stick Jackson on the rookie list and see what develops. We already have 3 very good KPD prospects on the list and I would just take what is on offer from the academy this year and not reach for anything more.
What would Harris Andrew cost us in terms of picks?

Knightmare in his phantom draft thread said that if Ben Keays keeps tracking along next year he'll be a top 5 pick, he rates him that highly. We have some very decent prospects in our academy too.

Edit : Funny reading TFB's post after typing mine :)

Worth bearing in mind that KM is one of those who has been critical of the Academy bidding process.

Understandable if he thinks we got someone worth a second rounder in the rookie draft because of it.

Doesn't' work that way. If any academy players aren't nominated by us in the main draft then they go into the draft pool just like anyone else. If they're still there in the rookie draft we can then have a priority rookie pick under the zone concessions.

Academy and Father/son work something like this from my understanding

1. Brisbane nominates players a, b and c as picks for the main draft
2. Other clubs choose to bid or not bid on individual players.
3. If player a gets a bid on them Brisbane matches it with their next pick. Then player b with the next if they get a bid. If player c attracts no bids then we take him with our last pick in the draft.
4. If Brisbane didn't nominate player d (who was also a academy or father son) then they go into the draft itself and can be picked up by anyone. If they survive through to the rookie draft we get first crack at them again as an end of rookie draft zone/academy selection.

So if we nominated Hammelman and Dawson in the process but not uebergang, then uebergang could be picked up by any other club as a normal draft selection. We can't say we'll take the first two in the main draft and the third in the rookie draft.

I'm pretty confident thats how it works? dlanod feel free to correct me.

I think jackess was referring to the fact that KM once thought Conway was worth an early second rounder and then subsequently slipped through to the rookie draft.

And the ignorance of supporters from other teams (especially Collingwood) as to how the system works.

We have to nominate which of our academy players we want to take in the draft. Those nominated players are then put up for the bidding process, if no other bids than we take them with our last picks. The non nominated academy players enter the draft like any other player and can be taken by anyone. Any left over academy kids not taken in the draft, we can take as rookies.

Fair enough. He can't be too upset though, pies could have taken him anywhere, obviously only worth a rookie pick in the end.

We have been stung with high picks on rucks, ruck/forwards before. Please don't do it again.

We need a KPF, so draft or trade for one. McCartin looks very good, we may not get him, I liked the look of Goddard also from Vic Country. I would be hesitant to use high picks on Vic Metro kids after the go home 5.

I guess there is a difference between a genuine forward who can go into the ruck (Petrie, Tippett, Boyd, Daniher etc) and a ruck-forward like Trent West.

I'm OK if Wright proves himself as the former. But we don't need another jack of all trades ruck-forward IMO.

That's where I am as well. Which is why I am wavering on the edge of the Petracca bandwagon at this stage

I really liked what I saw of Petracca too. To me, the Dustin Martin comparison is pretty apt and I'd love that sort of player. Still, based on Leppa's 'next monster forward' comments at the press conference, it's hard to imagine anyone short of 193cms going at our first pick.

He has the tools. I would probably take a KPF first just so we can cover on our main list weakness especially when next year looks like a draft with a lot of high quality mids and we also have 2 good looking mid (possibly 3) academy prospects as well.

I would also take Uebergang who also has a fair bit of talent. We need a couple to work out and this is probably the year to give ourselves as many lottery tickets as possible and hope a few work out. If we end up with more than we need a quality KPF is worth a lot at the trade table.
I like your assessment of Hammelman. My biggest query over him, based on what I've seen in previous years, is his aggressiveness and attack on the contest. Particularly in marking contests. The skill set and athletic quality is certainly there.

I've heard Uebergang runs a 2.90 in the 20m which has raised plenty of interest. I think we'll have to pay more for him than Hammelman.

That has been my concern as well from what I saw last year but there was no sign of that in the three games I have seen him this year. If you were just looking at him in those games and hadn't seen him before I doubt you would have thought there was any issue at all. He went when he had to go and was strong in the contest without doing anything stupid.

FWIW I am going to be surprised if Hammelmann does not go around 3 flat. His speed looks fine.

makes we wish you could trade on draft day.

eg.

Scenario 1. we hold pick 2 draft Wright and then as the draft progresses can then trade down to get a key forward we like who wasn't worth pick 2 and another first round talent we like.

Scenario 2. instead we'd have to take the risk of trading up front say Pick 2 for picks 8 and 13 (assume other team trades to get a second first rounder)

In scenario 2 you find that the key forward we know we are trading for in scenario 1 was actually picked at Pick 7 and you're left without the player you needed

Do we get a live pick with our 2nd or are we forced to use it for hammelmann or dawson will be the question. We seem to be after a mid with some pace, so at around 20 who do we have to pick from?

Im hoping that because our 2nd round pick is so low we wont be forced to use our 2nd on an academy player.
