Would be nice if at least one of Wright, Hammelmann or Uebergang takes the rest or the season by the scruff. If it is one of the academy lads who shines then I'd feel a lot more comfortable taking Petracca early. I think the more likely scenario is Wright stepping up with more time spent up forward, which may then bring McCartin into play for us.

Fingers crossed we're not all still wringing our hands in the days leading up to the draft.

Was wandering that myself. Is McCartin significantly better than Wright? Are saints set on McCartin could they take wright?

The other thing that counties to nag away at me is we are either last or second last for inside 50's. Seems it wouldn't matter if we had Tippet and Buddy up there if we can't get it there. Makes me wander what is a greater need classy fast mid or KPF?

The injuries to our team, we have the worst injury list in the league (why couldnt it be Collingwood).
Rich is having a significant impact as he is normally getting tagged. This then goes to rocky or hanley or zorko which reduces their output.

Again, given talls take longer to mature, I'd be stocking up now. Most first-round mids can play a role in their first year.

I don't think the "we don't have the ability to hit targets now" argument stacks up at all. Does that mean we'll never aspire to it? Or that we won't improve in that department? We have to be looking at 3-4 years down the track, not just next year.

I'm sitting on the fence with this one, so genuine questions:

Do you put any stock in beefing up the midfield first, then trading in a KPF? I know there have been obvious issues with this in the past (and, yanno, Carlton), but we've also had issues with players languishing in the ressies then going home.

Do we need to start drafting kids, that are more likely to play seniors early, especially with early round draft picks...then trade in mercenary talls for serious coin, a la the Swans? Trickier without the benefit of COLA, and I'm not suggesting it'd be easy, but in concert with project home-grown talls, I'm musing over the validity of the approach.

Can't see them beating West coast. I see us beating Melbourne, not sure how they would do against GWS.

Sides that structure up without a dominant key forward don't do so by choice. It generally means they haven't been able to recruit or develop the right player. Sure, it is possible to be successful without a key forward but, if you have the opportunity to get one, you generally take it.

We will potentially have the opportunity to draft the player who, at worst, we rate as the 2nd best tall forward in the draft. That's hard to ignore in a year when there are quite a few tall options around. We may not have an opportunity like this again in a hurry. Not every year will have tall forwards at the pointy end of the draft. And, hopefully, we won't always have a top 5 selection either.

Of course, there are risks and those risks would be lessened by taking a mid. But I just wonder if we need to be courageous and, provided we rate a couple of the key forwards, just bite the bullet.

He'd also have to leave on a contract that is worth a certain amount per year to qualify for a pick right after their first rounder. From memory it's $610K+

He is going to be very hard for St Kilda to pass up. Anyone who thinks McCartin is locked in at pick 1 should think again.

He will get that easily. He's barely worth it, but he will get it.

The free agency compensation formula neglects the fact that teams are willing to pay overs for players that cost them nothing at the trade table.

I think at this point it might be less "Frawley wanting to leave" and more "whether anyone would pay his exorbitant salary"

I wouldn't be surprised to see him stay and I really hope he does given the compo stuff. But a club might fork out the big money he was asking for, it's hard to know.
