Watch Eddie make a big deal about those numbers.

I bet Collingwood and Hawthorn nominated a bunch of the academy kids to validate their own argument.

I personally would see it as vindication for the academies and we can't take them all. That's five from our academy and would further highlight the fact that the acadamies are adding to the pool of players and not draining it as previously highlighted by Eddie. Yes, at the moment, we can take the best of the crop but another couple could be picked up late or rookied by others.

Sure will. Even though if the academies werent around it would be probably back in single figures and the draft pool would be weaker as the northern clubs then need to draft more from the trad footy states.

It is growing the talent pool, leaving more talented Vic, SA and WA players for the rest of them. They should be happy.

I think they are happiest when we pick up Vic, Sa and Wa kids, they let us build them up for two to three years just in time for them to poach them back home with bargain draft picks, i think they like the status que.

Yep, and for all Eddie's rantings about the quality of the AFL talent pool, he doesn't want more talent in the league, he wants more talent at Collingwood.

So that's 5 of our academy boys invited to the draft combine, an improvement on last year when only Freeman and Smith were invited. And you'd think that we won't have nominated most of these guys, given we'll already know them and would want them to fly under the radar. Shows good interest in our guys.

Just wondering who we'll take. 5 (and 4 KPPs) is too many for us, when weighing up against the talent pool across the country. Depends partly what happens with the bidding process. If we can still pick up 3 third round talents with round 3/4/5 picks we might take more than we would have taken otherwise.

We need to keep Martin we can't risk Leuey going down again. Really don't have any back up without him unless we get Wright in the draft

Yep I do not want to trade Stef either, just wanted to see peoples opinions on what they'd take for him though.

Was my first thought too.

And with Roos and Clayton nominated for the Combine we could get them both as late picks

More the merrier from the academies, namely ours. If we opt to take only a couple, the others are fair game to other clubs if they're good enough. Therefore down the track, we can potentially replicate what the other clubs have done to us and entice these boys home for measly draft picks. Haven't had that luxury before.

Just on Stef, ironically one of the only clubs I think would benefit greatly from having Martin (apart from us) is Melbourne. Spencer is a dud, Jamar is old, Gawn is injury prone and not that good anyway. Hope Crazy Neeldy enjoyed the picks we gave them in the 50s and 70s :D

The other club that I think would love Stef is Sydney. For all the riches they have, Pyke and Derickx aren't dominant ruckmen, which Martin has become (for only 7 games, admittedly). AFAIK Pyke has been a bit down on form this year and will be 31 before next season. If I were them I'd be making a serious play for Stef to join them and play out his last 3-5 years in a top 4 side. If he sticks with us, he's a good chance to slow down just as we start we are pushing the upper echelons of the ladder.

One interesting part will be of the players we want to take, how many we think will slip through to the rookie draft if we don't nominate them for the main draft.

As long the bidding rules aren't changed substantially, we can take all 7 prospects (those invited to Draft Combine) as long we have enough list spots. Now we're clearly not going to do that - we might nominate ?3 and hope a few more fall through to the rookie draft.

With the Draft Combine invitees list released, we have:

Matthew Hammelmann (key forward)
Liam Dawson (3rd tall / utility)
Harris Andrews (key forward / key defender)
Matt Uebergang (key forward)
Nick Jackson (key defender)
Tyler Roos (outside midfielder)
Josh Clayton (outside midfielder)

Of the 5 academy boys, from reports, sounds like they all have something to be worth a list spot. However, none of them have stamped themselves as top prospects, so we'll be potentially spending quite a few list spots on mid/late prospects.

Assuming the following get delisted: Lisle, Wearden, Michael
That leaves these developing talls:
- currently in best 22: Clarke, Gardiner, McStay, Close
- not in best 22: Paine, Bourke, Freeman

Will we be just adding too much quantity, but not quality?

Lots to think about.

Now you are getting somewhere

It's not a recent revelation. Just wish more people on the media would have the stones to call him out when he is spruking for Collingwood with his "journalist" hat on in the pretense of "looking after the competition as a whole".

I think Dawson and Hammelmann are guaranteed a spot on an AFL clubs list. The others I'm not sure sure about. Uebergang is the next best of those lot imo.
He'll have to do a lot better than he did this game - 7 possessions, 2 uncontested marks and 1 behind.

Wouldn't mind grabbing Jackson on the rookie list. We still need some defenders, and he seems as good of a prospect as any. I don't think we will go overboard to be honest. Roos and Clayton would be ok rookie prospects as well, perhaps even late pick. All in all will be interesting to see what happens when it all boils down and who ends up where.

Saw Tom Lamb of the Dandenong Stingrays on the weekend. Nice type - 192cm, not too skinny and can play both ends. Vic Country rep and will be sought after you would think.

Thinking about our talls Merritt, Maguire, Patful, staker, mcguane, Martin, west will all be finished/finishing in say 3-4 years, as rich, redden rocky leuie, Hanley are 28/29 and the kids are 22-23 and ready to compete for a flag. I.e. Time to think about 4 or 5 replacements now so they are bulked up and battle ready in time.

Re current list Many here are already down on Paine, lisle looks like heading out the door, mcstay/gardener/close are already in the team beside those named above so it's not like our list is ready with replacements.

Therefore Taking 4 this year IF they're good enough isn't necessarily too many. It would/may mean that next year we'd be targeting midfielders in the draft...

From what I've read übergang sounds like a project. Dawson sounds a bit undersized so maybe is more competing for running defender position in afl level anyway. Hammelman most discussed and presumably likely to be picked/matched and Harris Andrews has physical attributes but maybe not the game yet.

Getting say Andrews and übergang as 'projects' on the list beside another project in freeman (as opposed to rookie list) might be a bit much.

Would think our first pick will still be high enough to get one of the top 3 talls (wright, durdin, McCartin) + Hammelman + übergang and/or Andrews with either late live picks in draft or rookie draft might be how it turns out and then best available in between.
